We study the decay of gap plasmons localized between a scanning tunneling microscope tip and metal substrate, excited by inelastic tunneling electrons. The overall excited energy from the tunneling electrons is divided into two categories in the form of resistive dissipation and electromagnetic radiation, which together can further be separated into four different channels, including SPP channel on the tip, SPP channel on the substrate, air mode channel and direct quenching channel. We find that most of the excited energy goes to surface plasmon polaritons on the metallic STM tip, rather than that on the substrate. The direct quenching in the apex of tip also takes a considerable portion especially in high frequency region.

Superparamagnetic tunnel junctions (SMTJs) have emerged as a competitive, realistic nanotechnology to support novel forms of stochastic computation in CMOS-compatible platforms. One of their applications is to generate random bitstreams suitable for use in stochastic computing implementations. We describe a method for digitally programmable bitstream generation based on pre-charge sense amplifiers. This generator is significantly more energy efficient than SMTJ-based bitstream generators that tune probabilities with spin currents and a factor of two more efficient than related CMOS-based implementations. The true randomness of this bitstream generator allows us to use them as the fundamental units of a novel neural network architecture. To take advantage of the potential savings, we codesign the algorithm with the circuit, rather than directly transcribing a classical neural network into hardware. The flexibility of the neural network mathematics allows us to adapt the network to the explicitly energy efficient choices we make at the device level. The result is a convolutional neural network design operating at $approx$ 150 nJ per inference with 97 % performance on MNIST -- a factor of 1.4 to 7.7 improvement in energy efficiency over comparable proposals in the recent literature.

Plasmon and coupled plasmon-phonon modes in graphene are investigated the-oretically within the diagrammatic self-consistent field theory. It shows that two plasmon modes and four coupled plasmon-phonon modes can be excited via intra-and inter-band transition channels. It is found that with increasing q and carrier density, the plasmon modes couple strongly with the optic-phonon modes in graphene. The coupled plasmon-phonon modes exhibit some interesting features which can be utilized to realize the plasmonic devices. Our results suggest that the carrier-phonon interaction should be considered to understand and explain the properties of elementary electronic excitations in graphene.
Realization of electromagnetic energy confinement beyond the diffraction limit is of paramount importance for novel applications like nano-imaging, information processing, and energy harvest. Current approaches based on surface plasmon polaritons and photonic crystals are either intrinsically lossy or with low coupling efficiency. Herein, we successfully address these challenges by constructing an array of nonradiative anapoles that originate from the destructive far-field interference of electric and toroidal dipole modes. The proposed metachain can achieve ultracompact (1/13 of incident wavelength) and high-efficiency electromagnetic energy transfer without the coupler. We experimentally investigate the proposed metachain at mid-infrared and give the first near-field experimental evidence of anapole-based energy transfer, in which the spatial profile of anapole mode is also unambiguously identified at nanoscale. We further demonstrate the metachain is intrinsically lossless and scalable at infrared wavelengths, realizing a 90$^circ$ bending loss down to 0.32 dB at the optical communication wavelength. The present scheme bridges the gap between the energy confinement and transfer of anapoles, and opens a new gate for more compactly integrated photonic and energy devices, which can operate in a broad spectral range.
Carbon nanotubes provide a rare access point into the plasmon physics of one-dimensional electronic systems. By assembling purified nanotubes into uniformly sized arrays, we show that they support coherent plasmon resonances, that these plasmons enhance and hybridize with phonons, and that the phonon-plasmon resonances have quality factors as high as 10. Because coherent nanotube plasmonics can strengthen light-matter interactions, it provides a compelling platform for surface-enhanced infrared spectroscopy and tunable, high-performance optical devices at the nanometer scale.
We propose energy band engineering to enhance tunneling electroresistance (TER) in ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs). We predict that an ultrathin dielectric layer with a smaller band gap, embedded into a ferroelectric barrier layer, acts as a switch controlling high and low conductance states of an FTJ depending on polarization orientation. Using first-principles modeling based on density functional theory, we investigate this phenomenon for a prototypical SrRuO3/BaTiO3/SrRuO3 FTJ with a BaSnO3 monolayer embedded in the BaTiO3 barrier. We show that in such a composite-barrier FTJ, ferroelectric polarization of BaTiO3 shifts the conduction band minimum of the BaSnO3 monolayer above or below the Fermi energy depending on polarization orientation. The resulting switching between direct and resonant tunneling leads to a TER effect with a giant ON/OFF conductance ratio. The proposed resonant band engineering of FTJs can serve as a viable tool to enhance their performance useful for device application.
