Nd0.05Ce0.95CoIn5 features a magnetic field-driven quantum phase transition that separates two antiferromagnetic phases with an identical magnetic structure inside the superconducting condensate. Using neutron diffraction we demonstrate that the population of the two magnetic domains in the two phases is affected differently by the rotation of the magnetic field in the tetragonal basal plane. In the low-field SDW-phase the domain population is only weakly affected while in the high-field Q-phase they undergo a sharp switch for fields around the a-axis. Our results provide evidence that the anisotropic spin susceptibility in both phases arises ultimately from spin-orbit interactions but are qualitatively different in the two phases. This provides evidence that the electronic structure is changed at the quantum phase transition, which yields a modified coupling between magnetism and superconductivity in the Q-phase.

The vortex lattice (VL) in the mixed state of the stannide superconductor Yb$_{3}$Rh$_{4}$Sn$_{13}$ has been studied using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The field dependencies of the normalized longitudinal and transverse correlation lengths of the VL, $xi_L/a_0$ and $xi_T /a_0$, reveal two distinct anomalies that are associated with vortex-glass phases below $mu_0H_l$~$approx$~700~G and above $mu_{0}H_h$~$sim$~1.7~T ($a_0$ is the intervortex distance). At high fields, around 1.7~T, the longitudinal correlation decreases abruptly with increasing fields indicating a weakening (but not a complete destruction) of the VL due to a phase transition into a glassy phase, below $mu_{0}H_{c_2}$(1.8 K)~$approx$~2.5~T. $xi_L/a_0$ and $xi_T /a_0$, gradually decrease for decreasing fields of strengths less than 1~T and tend towards zero. The shear elastic modulus $c_{66}$ and the tilting elastic modulus $c_{44}$ vanish at a critical field $mu_0H_l$~$approx$~700~G, providing evidence for a disorder-induced transition into a vortex-glass. A ring of scattered intensity is observed for fields lower than 700~G, $i.e.$, $mu_{0}H_{c_1}$~=~135~G~$<$~$mu_{0}H$~$<$~700~G. This low-field phenomenon is of different nature than the one observed at high fields, where $xi_L/a_0$ but not $xi_T/a_0$, decreases abruptly to an intermediate value.
Utilizing Corbino disc structures, we have examined the magnetic field response of resistivity for the surface states of SmB6 on different crystalline surfaces at low temperatures. Our results reveal a hysteretic behavior whose magnitude depends on the magnetic field sweep rate and temperature. Although this feature becomes smaller when the field sweep is slower, a complete elimination or saturation is not observed in our slowest sweep-rate measurements, which is much slower than a typical magnetotransport trace. These observations cannot be explained by quantum interference corrections such as weak anti-localization. Instead, they are consistent with behaviors of glassy surface magnetic ordering, whose magnetic origin is most likely from samarium oxide (Sm2O3) forming on the surface during exposure to ambient conditions.
We study the Kitaev-Heisenberg-$Gamma$-$Gamma$ model that describes the magnetism in strong spin-orbit coupled honeycomb lattice Mott insulators. In strong $[111]$ magnetic fields that bring the system into the fully polarized paramagnetic phase, we find that the spin wave bands carry nontrivial Chern numbers over large regions of the phase diagram implying the presence of chiral magnon edge states. In contrast to other topological magnon systems, the topological nontriviality of these systems results from the presence of magnon number non-conserving terms in the Hamiltonian. Since the effects of interactions are suppressed by $J/h$, the validity of the single particle picture is tunable making paramagnetic phases particularly suitable for the exploration of this physics. Using time dependent DMRG and interacting spin wave theory, we demonstrate the presence of the chiral edge mode and its evolution with field.
The valence state of Yb ions in beta-YbAlB4 and its polymorph alpha-YbAlB4 has been investigated by using X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy in SPring-8 at temperatures from 2 to 280 K. The observed Yb valence is 2.78 +- 0.01 in beta-YbAlB4 at 2 K by using the X-ray emission spectroscopy. The valence is found to gradually increase with increasing temperature toward the trivalent state, and the characteristic temperature of the valence fluctuation is expected to be about 290 K. We also found a small increase in the Yb valence (~0.002) by applying a magnetic field of 32 T at 40 K to beta-YbAlB4.
We report an unexpected magnetic-field-driven magnetic structure in the 5f-electron Shastry- Sutherland system U2Pd2In. This phase develops at low temperatures from a noncollinear antiferromagnetic ground state above the critical field of 25.8 T applied along the a-axis. All U moments have a net magnetic moment in the direction of the applied field, described by a ferromagnetic propagation vector qF = (0 0 0) and an antiferromagnetic component described by a propagation vector qAF = (0 0.30 1/2 ) due to a modulation in the direction perpendicular to the applied field. We conclude that this surprising noncollinear magnetic structure is due to a competition between the single-ion anisotropy trying to keep moments, similar to the ground state, along the [110]-type directions, Dzyaloshinskii-Moryia interaction forcing them to be perpendicular to each other and application of the external magnetic field attempting to align them along the field direction.
