The spherical-harmonics expansion is a mathematically rigorous procedure and a powerful tool for the representation of potential energy surfaces of interacting molecular systems, determining their spectroscopic and dynamical properties, specifically in van der Waals clusters, with applications also to classical and quantum molecular dynamics simulations. The technique consists in the construction (by ab initio or semiempirical methods) of the expanded potential interaction up to terms that provide the generation of a number of leading configurations sufficient to account for faithful geometrical representations. This paper reports the full general description of the method of the spherical-harmonics expansion as applied to diatomic-molecule-diatomic-molecule systems of increasing complexity: the presentation of the mathematical background is given for providing both the application to the prototypical cases considered previously (O2-O2, N2-N2, and N2-O2 systems) and the generalization to: (i) the CO-CO system, where a characteristic feature is the lower symmetry order with respect to the cases studied before, requiring a larger number of expansion terms necessary to adequately represent the potential energy surface; and (ii) the CO-HF system, which exhibits the lowest order of symmetry among this class of aggregates and therefore the highest number of leading configurations.

The dynamics of co- and counter-rotating coupled spherical pendulums (two lower pendulums are mounted at the end of the upper pendulum) is considered. Linear mode analysis shows the existence of three rotating modes. Starting from linear modes allow we calculate the nonlinear normal modes, which are and present them in frequency-energy plots. With the increase of energy in one mode we observe a symmetry breaking pitchfork bifurcation. In the second part of the paper we consider energy transfer between pendulums having different energies. The results for co-rotating (all pendulums rotate in the same direction) and counter-rotating motion (one of lower pendulums rotates in the opposite direction) are presented. In general, the energy fluctuations in counter-rotating pendulums are found to be higher than in the co-rotating case.
For the prototypical diatomic-molecule - diatomic molecule interactions H2-HX and H2-X2, where X = F, Cl, Br, quantum-chemical ab initio calculations are carried out on grids of the configuration space, which permit a spherical-harmonics representation of the potential energy surfaces (PESs). Dimer geometries are considered for sets of representative leading configurations, and the PESs are analyzed in terms of isotropic and anisotropic contributions. The leading configurations are individuated by selecting a minimal set of mutual orientations of molecules needed to build the spherical-harmonic expansion on geometrical and symmetry grounds. The terms of the PESs corresponding to repulsive and bonding dimer geometries and the averaged isotropic term, for each pair of interacting molecules, are compared with representations in terms of a potential function proposed by Pirani et al. (see Chem. Phys. Lett. 2004, 394, 37-44 and references therein). Connections of the involved parameters with molecular properties provide insight into the nature of the interactions.
The adsorption of gas molecules (CO, NH$_3$, CO$_2$ ) on Polyaniline Emeraldine salt has been performed to study gas sensing. Density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations have been carried out to compute the response mechanism of polyaniline emeraldine salt (PANI ES) oligoanalinines (with two to six rings) to gas molecules. The optimized geometry and electronic structure corresponding to molecule and complexes are computed with the pseudo-potential and full-potential methods. The absorption spectra corresponding to polyaniline emeraldine salt molecule and its complexes are calculated using TD-DFT. We found it out that the electronic and optical features corresponding to complexes show more sensitive to the NH$_3$ adsorption. The optical absorption spectrum analysis was used for all ( nPANI ES-X ) and isolated nPANI ES. Then, the related spectrum indicates that the $lambda_{max}$ is shifted red or blue, is affected by the kind of complex.

We report the first experimental observation of non-adiabatic field-free orientation of a heteronuclear diatomic molecule (CO) induced by an intense two-color (800 and 400 nm) femtosecond laser field. We monitor orientation by measuring fragment ion angular distributions after Coulomb explosion with an 800 nm pulse. The orientation of the molecules is controlled by the relative phase of the two-color field. The results are compared to quantum mechanical rigid rotor calculations. The demonstrated method can be applied to study molecular frame dynamics under field-free conditions in conjunction with a variety of spectroscopy methods, such as high-harmonic generation, electron diffraction and molecular frame photoemission.
