The dynamics of co- and counter-rotating coupled spherical pendulums (two lower pendulums are mounted at the end of the upper pendulum) is considered. Linear mode analysis shows the existence of three rotating modes. Starting from linear modes allow we calculate the nonlinear normal modes, which are and present them in frequency-energy plots. With the increase of energy in one mode we observe a symmetry breaking pitchfork bifurcation. In the second part of the paper we consider energy transfer between pendulums having different energies. The results for co-rotating (all pendulums rotate in the same direction) and counter-rotating motion (one of lower pendulums rotates in the opposite direction) are presented. In general, the energy fluctuations in counter-rotating pendulums are found to be higher than in the co-rotating case.

Quantum search is a quantum mechanical technique for searching N possibilities in only sqrt(N) steps. This paper gives a fresh perspective on the algorithm in terms of a resonance phenomenon which is implemented through classical coupled oscillators. Consider N oscillators, one of which is of a different resonant frequency. We could identify which one this is by measuring the oscillation frequency of each oscillator, a procedure that would take about N cycles. We show how, by coupling the oscillators together in a very simple way, it is possible to identify the different one in only sqrt(N) cycles. An extension of this technique to the quantum case leads to the quantum search algorithm.
Recently, a novel mixed-synchronization phenomenon is observed in counter-rotating nonlinear coupled oscillators. In mixed-synchronization state: some variables are synchronized in-phase, while others are out-of-phase. We have experimentally verified the occurrence of mixed-synchronization states in coupled counter-rotating chaotic piecewise Rossler oscillator. Analytical discussion on approximate stability analysis and numerical confirmation on the experimentally observed behavior is also given.
Forced oscillation of a system composed of two pendulums coupled by a spring in the presence of damping is investigated. In the steady state and within the small angle approximation we solve the system equations of motion and obtain the amplitudes and phases of in terms of the frequency of the sinusoidal driving force. The resonance frequencies are obtained and the amplitude ratio is discussed in details. Contrary to a single oscillator, in this two-degree of freedom system four resonant frequencies, which are close to mode frequencies, appear. Within the pass-band interval the system is shown to exhibit a rich and complicated behaviour. It is shown that damping crucially affects the system properties. Under certain circumstances, the amplitude of the oscillator which is directly connected to the driving force becomes smaller than the one far from it. Particularly we show the existence of a driving frequency at which the connected oscillators amplitude goes zero.
We present an experimental and numerical study of missing-level statistics of chaotic three-dimensional microwave cavities. The nearest-neighbor spacing distribution, the spectral rigidity, and the power spectrum of level fluctuations were investigated. We show that the theoretical approach to a problem of incomplete spectra does not work well when the incompleteness of the spectra is caused by unresolved resonances. In such a case the fraction of missing levels can be evaluated by calculations based on random matrix theory.
Two elastically coupled nanomechanical resonators driven independently near their resonance frequencies show intricate nonlinear dynamics. The dynamics provide a scheme for realizing a nanomechanical system with tunable frequency and nonlinear properties. For large vibration amplitudes the system develops spontaneous oscillations of amplitude modulation that also show period doubling transitions and chaos. The complex nonlinear dynamics are quantitatively predicted by a simple theoretical model.
