We study the sign distribution of generalized magnetic susceptibilities in the temperature-external magnetic field plane using the three-dimensional three-state Potts model. We find that the sign of odd-order susceptibility is opposite in the symmetric (disorder) and broken (order) phases, but that of the even-order one remains positive when it is far away from the phase boundary. When the critical point is approached from the crossover side, negative fourth-order magnetic susceptibility is observable. It is also demonstrated that non-monotonic behavior occurs in the temperature dependence of the generalized susceptibilities of the energy. The finite-size scaling behavior of the specific heat in this model is mainly controlled by the critical exponent of the magnetic susceptibility in the three-dimensional Ising universality class.

We perform a detailed investigation of the scaling Potts field theory using the truncated conformal space approach.
We present an analytic study of the Potts model partition function on two different types of self-similar lattices of triangular shape with non integer Hausdorff dimension. Both types of lattices analyzed here are interesting examples of non-trivial thermodynamics in less than two dimensions. First, the Sierpinski gasket is considered. It is shown that, by introducing suitable geometric coefficients, it is possible to reduce the computation of the partition function to a dynamical system, whose variables are directly connected to (the arising of) frustration on macroscopic scales, and to determine the possible phases of the system. The same method is then used to analyse the Hanoi graph. Again, dynamical system theory provides a very elegant way to determine the phase diagram of the system. Then, exploiting the analysis of the basins of attractions of the corresponding dynamical systems, we construct various examples of self-similar lattices with more than one critical temperature. These multiple critical temperatures correspond to crossing phases with different degrees of frustration.

Using Monte Carlo simulations, finite-size effects of interfacial properties in the rough phase of the Ising on a cubic lattice with $Ltimes Ltimes R$ sites are studied. In particular, magnetization profiles perpendicular to the flat interface of size L$times$R are studied, with $L$ being considerably larger than $R$, in the (pre)critical temperature range. The resulting $R$-dependences are compared with predictions of the standard capillary-wave theory, in the Gaussian approximation, and with a field theory based on effective string actions, for $L$=$infty$.

A study is made of an anisotropic Potts model in three dimensions where the coupling depends on both the Potts state on each site but also the direction of the bond between them using both analytical and numerical methods. The phase diagram is mapped out for all values of the exchange interactions. Six distinct phases are identified. Monte Carlo simulations have been used to obtain the order parameter and the values for the energy and entropy in the ground state and also the transition temperatures. Excellent agreement is found between the simulated and analytic results. We find one region where there are two phase transitions with the lines meeting in a triple point. The orbital ordering that occurs in $LaMnO_3$ occurs as one of the ordered phases.

A detailed analysis of the finite-size effects on the bulk critical behaviour of the $d$-dimensional mean spherical model confined to a film geometry with finite thickness $L$ is reported. Along the finite direction different kinds of boundary conditions are applied: periodic $(p)$, antiperiodic $(a)$ and free surfaces with Dirichlet $(D)$, Neumann $(N)$ and a combination of Neumann and Dirichlet $(ND)$ on both surfaces. A systematic method for the evaluation of the finite-size corrections to the free energy for the different types of boundary conditions is proposed. The free energy density and the equation for the spherical field are computed for arbitrary $d$. It is found, for $2<d<4$, that the singular part of the free energy has the required finite-size scaling form at the bulk critical temperature only for $(p)$ and $(a)$. For the remaining boundary conditions the standard finite-size scaling hypothesis is not valid. At $d=3$, the critical amplitude of the singular part of the free energy (related to the so called Casimir amplitude) is estimated. We obtain $Delta^{(p)}=-2zeta(3)/(5pi)=-0.153051...$, $Delta^{(a)}=0.274543...$ and $Delta^{(ND)}=0.01922...$, implying a fluctuation--induced attraction between the surfaces for $(p)$ and repulsion in the other two cases. For $(D)$ and $(N)$ we find a logarithmic dependence on $L$.
