General human action recognition requires understanding of various visual cues. In this paper, we propose a network architecture that computes and integrates the most important visual cues for action recognition: pose, motion, and the raw images. For the integration, we introduce a Markov chain model which adds cues successively. The resulting approach is efficient and applicable to action classification as well as to spatial and temporal action localization. The two contributions clearly improve the performance over respective baselines. The overall approach achieves state-of-the-art action classification performance on HMDB51, J-HMDB and NTU RGB+D datasets. Moreover, it yields state-of-the-art spatio-temporal action localization results on UCF101 and J-HMDB.
State-of-the-art temporal action detectors to date are based on two-stream input including RGB frames and optical flow. Although combining RGB frames and optical flow boosts performance significantly, optical flow is a hand-designed representation which not only requires heavy computation, but also makes it methodologically unsatisfactory that two-stream methods are often not learned end-to-end jointly with the flow. In this paper, we argue that optical flow is dispensable in high-accuracy temporal action detection and image level data augmentation (ILDA) is the key solution to avoid performance degradation when optical flow is removed. To evaluate the effectiveness of ILDA, we design a simple yet efficient one-stage temporal action detector based on single RGB stream named DaoTAD. Our results show that when trained with ILDA, DaoTAD has comparable accuracy with all existing state-of-the-art two-stream detectors while surpassing the inference speed of previous methods by a large margin and the inference speed is astounding 6668 fps on GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. In this work we propose to utilize information about human actions to improve pose estimation in monocular videos. To this end, we present a pictorial structure model that exploits high-level information about activities to incorporate higher-order part dependencies by modeling action specific appearance models and pose priors. However, instead of using an additional expensive action recognition framework, the action priors are efficiently estimated by our pose estimation framework. This is achieved by starting with a uniform action prior and updating the action prior during pose estimation. We also show that learning the right amount of appearance sharing among action classes improves the pose estimation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method on two challenging datasets for pose estimation and action recognition with over 80,000 test images.
Modern multi-object tracking (MOT) system usually involves separated modules, such as motion model for location and appearance model for data association. However, the compatible problems within both motion and appearance models are always ignored. In this paper, a general architecture named as MIF is presented by seamlessly blending the Motion integration, three-dimensional(3D) Integral image and adaptive appearance feature Fusion. Since the uncertain pedestrian and camera motions are usually handled separately, the integrated motion model is designed using our defined intension of camera motion. Specifically, a 3D integral image based spatial blocking method is presented to efficiently cut useless connections between trajectories and candidates with spatial constraints. Then the appearance model and visibility prediction are jointly built. Considering scale, pose and visibility, the appearance features are adaptively fused to overcome the feature misalignment problem. Our MIF based tracker (MIFT) achieves the state-of-the-art accuracy with 60.1 MOTA on both MOT16&17 challenges.
We propose a method for representing motion information for video classification and retrieval. We improve upon local descriptor based methods that have been among the most popular and successful models for representing videos. The desired local descriptors need to satisfy two requirements: 1) to be representative, 2) to be discriminative. Therefore, they need to occur frequently enough in the videos and to be be able to tell the difference among different types of motions. To generate such local descriptors, the video blocks they are based on must contain just the right amount of motion information. However, current state-of-the-art local descriptor methods use video blocks with a single fixed size, which is insufficient for covering actions with varying speeds. In this paper, we introduce a long-short term motion feature that generates descriptors from video blocks with multiple lengths, thus covering motions with large speed variance. Experimental results show that, albeit simple, our model achieves state-of-the-arts results on several benchmark datasets.
Analyzing videos of human actions involves understanding the temporal relationships among video frames. State-of-the-art action recognition approaches rely on traditional optical flow estimation methods to pre-compute motion information for CNNs. Such a two-stage approach is computationally expensive, storage demanding, and not end-to-end trainable. In this paper, we present a novel CNN architecture that implicitly captures motion information between adjacent frames. We name our approach hidden two-stream CNNs because it only takes raw video frames as input and directly predicts action classes without explicitly computing optical flow. Our end-to-end approach is 10x faster than its two-stage baseline. Experimental results on four challenging action recognition datasets: UCF101, HMDB51, THUMOS14 and ActivityNet v1.2 show that our approach significantly outperforms the previous best real-time approaches.
