We have studied theoretically the type-II GaAsSb capped InAs quantum dots for two structures differing in the composition of the capping layer, being either (i) constant or (ii) with Sb accumulation above the apex of the dot. We have found that the hole states are segmented and resemble the states in the quantum dot molecules. The two-hole states form singlet and triplet with the splitting energy of 4{mu}eV / 325{mu}eV for the case (i) / (ii). We have also tested the possibility to tune the splitting by vertically applied magnetic field. As the predicted tunability range was limited, we propose an approach for its enhancement.

The exciton lifetimes $T_1$ in arrays of InAs/GaAs vertically coupled quantum dot pairs have been measured by time-resolved photoluminescence. A considerable reduction of $T_1$ by up to a factor of $sim$ 2 has been observed as compared to a quantum dots reference, reflecting the inter-dot coherence. Increase of the molecular coupling strength leads to a systematic decrease of $T_1$ with decreasing barrier width, as for wide barriers a fraction of structures shows reduced coupling while for narrow barriers all molecules appear to be well coupled. The coherent excitons in the molecules gain the oscillator strength of the excitons in the two separate quantum dots halving the exciton lifetime. This superradiance effect contributes to the previously observed increase of the homogeneous exciton linewidth, but is weaker than the reduction of $T_2$. This shows that as compared to the quantum dots reference pure dephasing becomes increasingly important for the molecules.
In this report, we present the derivation of the differential reflection spectrum as has been reported in emph{Phys. Rev. B} textbf{72}, 195301 (2005).
The many-body state of carriers confined in a quantum dot is controlled by the balance between their kinetic energy and their Coulomb correlation. In coupled quantum dots, both can be tuned by varying the inter-dot tunneling and interactions. Using a theoretical approach based on the diagonalization of the exact Hamiltonian, we show that transitions between different quantum phases can be induced through inter-dot coupling both for a system of few electrons (or holes) and for aggregates of electrons and holes. We discuss their manifestations in addition energy spectra (accessible through capacitance or transport experiments) and optical spectra.

Strong spin-orbit interaction characteristic for p-type GaAs systems, makes such systems promising for the realization of spintronic devices. Here we report on transport measurements in nanostructures fabricated on p-type, C-doped GaAs heterostructures by scanning probe oxidation lithography. We observe conductance quantization in a quantum point contact, as well as pronounced Coulomb resonances in two quantum dots with different geometries. Charging energies for both dots, extracted from Coulomb diamond measurements are in agreement with the lithographic dimensions of the dots. The absence of excited states in Coulomb diamond measurements indicates that the dots are in the multi-level transport regime.

A quantum dot fabricated by scanning probe oxidation lithography on a p-type, C-doped GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure is investigated by low temperature electrical conductance measurements. Clear Coulomb blockade oscillations are observed and analyzed in terms of sequential tunneling through the single-particle levels of the dot at T_hole = 185 mK. The charging energies as large as 2 meV evaluated from Coulomb diamond measurements together with the well resolved single-hole excited state lines in the charge stability diagram indicate that the dot is operated with a small number of confined particles close to the ultimate single-hole regime.
