We consider the positioning problem of aerial drone systems for efficient three-dimensional (3-D) coverage. Our solution draws from molecular geometry, where forces among electron pairs surrounding a central atom arrange their positions. In this paper, we propose a 3-D clustering algorithm for autonomous positioning (VBCA) of aerial drone networks based on virtual forces. These virtual forces induce interactions among drones and structure the system topology. The advantages of our approach are that (1) virtual forces enable drones to self-organize the positioning process and (2) VBCA can be implemented entirely localized. Extensive simulations show that our virtual forces clustering approach produces scalable 3-D topologies exhibiting near-optimal volume coverage. VBCA triggers efficient topology rearrangement for an altering number of nodes, while providing network connectivity to the central drone. We also draw a comparison of volume coverage achieved by VBCA against existing approaches and find VBCA up to 40% more efficient.

Video-based sensing from aerial drones, especially small multirotor drones, can provide rich data for numerous applications, including traffic analysis (computing traffic flow volumes), precision agriculture (periodically evaluating plant health), and wildlife population management (estimating population sizes). However, aerial drone video sensing applications must handle a surprisingly wide range of tasks: video frames must be aligned so that we can equate coordinates of objects that appear in different frames, video data must be analyzed to extract application-specific insights, and drone routes must be computed that maximize the value of newly captured video. To address these challenges, we built SkyQuery, a novel aerial drone video sensing platform that provides an expressive, high-level programming language to make it straightforward for users to develop complex long-running sensing applications. SkyQuery combines novel methods for fast video frame alignment and detection of small objects in top-down aerial drone video to efficiently execute applications with diverse video analysis workflows and data distributions, thereby allowing application developers to focus on the unique qualities of their particular application rather than general video processing, data analysis, and drone routing tasks. We conduct diverse case studies using SkyQuery in parking monitoring, pedestrian activity mapping, and traffic hazard detection scenarios to demonstrate the generalizability and effectiveness of our system.
Establishing robust connectivity in heterogeneous networks (HetNets) is an important yet challenging problem. For a HetNet accommodating a large number of nodes, establishing perturbation-invulnerable connectivity is of utmost importance. This paper provides a robust advantaged node placement strategy best suited for sparse network graphs. In order to offer connectivity robustness, this paper models the communication range of an advantaged node with a hexagon embedded within a circle representing the physical range of a node. Consequently, the proposed node placement method of this paper is based on a so-called hexagonal coordinate system (HCS) in which we develop an extended algebra. We formulate a class of geometric distance optimization problems aiming at establishing robust connectivity of a graph of multiple clusters of nodes. After showing that our formulated problem is NP-hard, we utilize HCS to efficiently solve an approximation of the problem. First, we show that our solution closely approximates an exhaustive search solution approach for the originally formulated NP-hard problem. Then, we illustrate its advantages in comparison with other alternatives through experimental results capturing advantaged node cost, runtime, and robustness characteristics. The results show that our algorithm is most effective in sparse networks for which we derive classification thresholds.
Edge computing enables Mobile Autonomous Systems (MASs) to execute continuous streams of heavy-duty mission-critical processing tasks, such as real-time obstacle detection and navigation. However, in practical applications, erratic patterns in channel quality, network load, and edge server load can interrupt the task flow execution, which necessarily leads to severe disruption of the systems key operations. Existing work has mostly tackled the problem with reactive approaches, which cannot guarantee task-level reliability. Conversely, in this paper we focus on learning-based predictive edge computing to achieve self-resilient task offloading. By conducting a preliminary experimental evaluation, we show that there is no dominant feature that can predict the edge-MAS system reliability, which calls for an ensemble and selection of weaker features. To tackle the complexity of the problem, we propose SeReMAS, a data-driven optimization framework. We first mathematically formulate a Redundant Task Offloading Problem (RTOP), where a MAS may connect to multiple edge servers for redundancy, and needs to select which server(s) to transmit its computing tasks in order to maximize the probability of task execution while minimizing channel and edge resource utilization. We then create a predictor based on Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), which produces the optimum task assignment based on application-, network- and telemetry-based features. We prototype SeReMAS on a testbed composed by a drone, mounting a PixHawk flight controller, a Jetson Nano board, and three 802.11n WiFi interfaces. We extensively evaluate SeReMAS by considering an application where one drone offloads high-resolution images for real-time analysis to three edge servers on the ground. Experimental results show that SeReMAS improves task execution probability by $17%$ with respect to existing reactive-based approaches.
The use of delivery services is an increasing trend worldwide, further enhanced by the COVID pandemic. In this context, drone delivery systems are of great interest as they may allow for faster and cheaper deliveries. This paper presents a navigation system that makes feasible the delivery of parcels with autonomous drones. The system generates a path between a start and a final point and controls the drone to follow this path based on its localization obtained through GPS, 9DoF IMU, and barometer. In the landing phase, information of poses estimated by a marker (ArUco) detection technique using a camera, ultra-wideband (UWB) devices, and the drones software estimation are merged by utilizing an Extended Kalman Filter algorithm to improve the landing precision. A vector field-based method controls the drone to follow the desired path smoothly, reducing vibrations or harsh movements that could harm the transported parcel. Real experiments validate the delivery strategy and allow to evaluate the performance of the adopted techniques. Preliminary results state the viability of our proposal for autonomous drone delivery.
Autonomous vehicles bring the promise of enhancing the consumer experience in terms of comfort and convenience and, in particular, the safety of the autonomous vehicle. Safety functions in autonomous vehicles such as Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Centering Assist rely on computation, information sharing, and the timely actuation of the safety functions. One opportunity to achieve robust autonomous vehicle safety is by enhancing the robustness of in-vehicle networking architectures that support built-in resiliency mechanisms. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an advanced networking paradigm that allows fine-grained manipulation of routing tables and routing engines and the implementation of complex features such as failover, which is a mechanism of protecting in-vehicle networks from failure, and in which a standby link automatically takes over once the main link fails. In this paper, we leverage SDN network programmability features to enable resiliency in the autonomous vehicle realm. We demonstrate that a Software Defined In-Vehicle Networking (SDIVN) does not add overhead compared to Legacy In-Vehicle Networks (LIVNs) under non-failure conditions and we highlight its superiority in the case of a link failure and its timely delivery of messages. We verify the proposed architectures benefits using a simulation environment that we have developed and we validate our design choices through testing and simulations
