We construct exactly solvable models for a wide class of symmetry enriched topological (SET) phases. Our construction applies to 2D bosonic SET phases with finite unitary onsite symmetry group $G$ and we conjecture that our models realize every phase in this class that can be described by a commuting projector Hamiltonian. Our models are designed so that they have a special property: if we couple them to a dynamical lattice gauge field with gauge group $G$, the resulting gauge theories are equivalent to modified string-net models. This property is what allows us to analyze our models in generality. As an example, we present a model for a phase with the same anyon excitations as the toric code and with a $mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry which exchanges the $e$ and $m$ type anyons. We further illustrate our construction with a number of additional examples.
We construct fixed-point wave functions and exactly solvable commuting-projector Hamiltonians for a large class of bosonic symmetry-enriched topological (SET) phases, based on the concept of equivalent classes of symmetric local unitary transformations. We argue that for onsite unitary symmetries, our construction realizes all SETs free of anomaly, as long as the underlying topological order itself can be realized with a commuting-projector Hamiltonian. We further extend the construction to anti-unitary symmetries (e.g. time-reversal symmetry), mirror-reflection symmetries, and to anomalous SETs on the surface of three-dimensional symmetry-protected topological phases. Mathematically, our construction naturally leads to a generalization of group extensions of unitary fusion categories to anti-unitary symmetries.
We propose a general construction of commuting projector lattice models for 2D and 3D topological phases enriched by U(1) symmetry, with finite-dimensional Hilbert space per site. The construction starts from a commuting projector model of the topological phase and decorates U(1) charges to the state space in a consistent manner. We show that all 2D U(1) symmetry-enriched topological phases which allow gapped boundary without breaking symmetry, can be realized through our construction. We also construct a large class of 3D topological phases with U(1) symmetry fractionalized on particles or loop excitations.
We show how to compute the exact partition function for lattice statistical-mechanical models whose Boltzmann weights obey a special crossing symmetry. The crossing symmetry equates partition functions on different trivalent graphs, allowing a transformation to a graph where the partition function is easily computed. The simplest example is counting the number of nets without ends on the honeycomb lattice, including a weight per branching. Other examples include an Ising model on the Kagome lattice with three-spin interactions, dimers on any graph of corner-sharing triangles, and non-crossing loops on the honeycomb lattice, where multiple loops on each edge are allowed. We give several methods for obtaining models with this crossing symmetry, one utilizing discrete groups and another anyon fusion rules. We also present results indicating that for models which deviate slightly from having crossing symmetry, a real-space decimation (renormalization-group-like) procedure restores the crossing symmetry.
Motivated by the recently established duality between elasticity of crystals and a fracton tensor gauge theory, we combine it with boson-vortex duality, to explicitly account for bosonic statistics of the underlying atoms. We thereby derive a hybrid vector-tensor gauge dual of a supersolid, which features both crystalline and superfluid order. The gauge dual describes a fracton state of matter with full dipole mobility endowed by the superfluid order, as governed by mutual axion electrodynamics between the fracton and vortex sectors of the theory, with an associated generalized Witten effect. Vortex condensation restores U(1) symmetry, confines dipoles to be subdimensional (recovering the dislocation glide constraint of a commensurate quantum crystal), and drives a phase transition between two distinct fracton phases. Meanwhile, condensation of elementary fracton dipoles and charges, respectively, provide a gauge dual description of the super-hexatic and ordinary superfluid. Consistent with conventional wisdom, in the absence of crystalline order, U(1)-symmetric phases are prohibited at zero temperature via a mechanism akin to deconfined quantum criticality.
We establish a direct connection between inhomogeneous XX spin chains (or free fermion systems with nearest-neighbors hopping) and certain QES models on the line giving rise to a family of weakly orthogonal polynomials. We classify all such models and their associated XX chains, which include two families related to the Lame (finite gap) quantum potential on the line. For one of these chains, we numerically compute the Renyi bipartite entanglement entropy at half filling and derive an asymptotic approximation thereof by studying the models continuous limit, which turns out to describe a massless Dirac fermion on a suitably curved background. We show that the leading behavior of the entropy is that of a $c=1$ critical system, although there is a subleading $log(log N)$ correction (where $N$ is the number of sites) unusual in this type of models.
