Feature representation and metric learning are two critical components in person re-identification models. In this paper, we focus on the feature representation and claim that hand-crafted histogram features can be complementary to Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) features. We propose a novel feature extraction model called Feature Fusion Net (FFN) for pedestrian image representation. In FFN, back propagation makes CNN features constrained by the handcrafted features. Utilizing color histogram features (RGB, HSV, YCbCr, Lab and YIQ) and texture features (multi-scale and multi-orientation Gabor features), we get a new deep feature representation that is more discriminative and compact. Experiments on three challenging datasets (VIPeR, CUHK01, PRID450s) validates the effectiveness of our proposal.

Visual attention has proven to be effective in improving the performance of person re-identification. Most existing methods apply visual attention heuristically by learning an additional attention map to re-weight the feature maps for person re-identification. However, this kind of methods inevitably increase the model complexity and inference time. In this paper, we propose to incorporate the attention learning as additional objectives in a person ReID network without changing the original structure, thus maintain the same inference time and model size. Two kinds of attentions have been considered to make the learned feature maps being aware of the person and related body parts respectively. Globally, a holistic attention branch (HAB) makes the feature maps obtained by backbone focus on persons so as to alleviate the influence of background. Locally, a partial attention branch (PAB) makes the extracted features be decoupled into several groups and be separately responsible for different body parts (i.e., keypoints), thus increasing the robustness to pose variation and partial occlusion. These two kinds of attentions are universal and can be incorporated into existing ReID networks. We have tested its performance on two typical networks (TriNet and Bag of Tricks) and observed significant performance improvement on five widely used datasets.
Person re-identification (reID) plays an important role in computer vision. However, existing methods suffer from performance degradation in occluded scenes. In this work, we propose an occlusion-robust block, Region Feature Completion (RFC), for occluded reID. Different from most previous works that discard the occluded regions, RFC block can recover the semantics of occluded regions in feature space. Firstly, a Spatial RFC (SRFC) module is developed. SRFC exploits the long-range spatial contexts from non-occluded regions to predict the features of occluded regions. The unit-wise prediction task leads to an encoder/decoder architecture, where the region-encoder models the correlation between non-occluded and occluded region, and the region-decoder utilizes the spatial correlation to recover occluded region features. Secondly, we introduce Temporal RFC (TRFC) module which captures the long-term temporal contexts to refine the prediction of SRFC. RFC block is lightweight, end-to-end trainable and can be easily plugged into existing CNNs to form RFCnet. Extensive experiments are conducted on occluded and commonly holistic reID benchmarks. Our method significantly outperforms existing methods on the occlusion datasets, while remains top even superior performance on holistic datasets. Person re-identification (re-ID) tackles the problem of matching person images with the same identity from different cameras. In practical applications, due to the differences in camera performance and distance between cameras and persons of interest, captured person images usually have various resolutions. We name this problem as Cross-Resolution Person Re-identification which brings a great challenge for matching correctly. In this paper, we propose a Deep High-Resolution Pseudo-Siamese Framework (PS-HRNet) to solve the above problem. Specifically, in order to restore the resolution of low-resolution images and make reasonable use of different channel information of feature maps, we introduce and innovate VDSR module with channel attention (CA) mechanism, named as VDSR-CA. Then we reform the HRNet by designing a novel representation head to extract discriminating features, named as HRNet-ReID. In addition, a pseudo-siamese framework is constructed to reduce the difference of feature distributions between low-resolution images and high-resolution images. The experimental results on five cross-resolution person datasets verify the effectiveness of our proposed approach. Compared with the state-of-the-art methods, our proposed PS-HRNet improves 3.4%, 6.2%, 2.5%,1.1% and 4.2% at Rank-1 on MLR-Market-1501, MLR-CUHK03, MLR-VIPeR, MLR-DukeMTMC-reID, and CAVIAR datasets, respectively. High performance person Re-Identification (Re-ID) requires the model to focus on both global silhouette and local details of pedestrian. To extract such more representative features, an effective way is to exploit deep models with multiple branches. However, most multi-branch based methods implemented by duplication of part backbone structure normally lead to severe increase of computational cost. In this paper, we propose a lightweight Feature Pyramid Branch (FPB) to extract features from different layers of networks and aggregate them in a bidirectional pyramid structure. Cooperated by attention modules and our proposed cross orthogonality regularization, FPB significantly prompts the performance of backbone network by only introducing less than 1.5M extra parameters. Extensive experimental results on standard benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed FPB based model outperforms state-of-the-art methods with obvious margin as well as much less model complexity. FPB borrows the idea of the Feature Pyramid Network (FPN) from prevailing object detection methods. To our best knowledge, it is the first successful application of similar structure in person Re-ID tasks, which empirically proves that pyramid network as affiliated branch could be a potential structure in related feature embedding models. Learning the distance metric between pairs of examples is of great importance for visual recognition, especially for person re-identification (Re-Id). Recently, the contrastive and triplet loss are proposed to enhance the discriminative power of the deeply learned features, and have achieved remarkable success. As can be seen, either the contrastive or triplet loss is just one special case of the Euclidean distance relationships among these training samples. Therefore, we propose a structured graph Laplacian embedding algorithm, which can formulate all these structured distance relationships into the graph Laplacian form. The proposed method can take full advantages of the structured distance relationships among these training samples, with the constructed complete graph. Besides, this formulation makes our method easy-to-implement and super-effective. When embedding the proposed algorithm with the softmax loss for the CNN training, our method can obtain much more robust and discriminative deep features with inter-personal dispersion and intra-personal compactness, which is essential to person Re-Id. We illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed method on top of three popular networks, namely AlexNet, DGDNet and ResNet50, on recent four widely used Re-Id benchmark datasets. Our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performances.
