We report an experimental and theoretical investigation of the lattice dynamics and thermal properties of the actinide dioxide NpO$_2$. The energy-wavevector dispersion relation for normal modes of vibration propagating along the $[001]$, $[110]$, and $[111]$ high-symmetry lines in NpO$_2$ at room temperature has been determined by measuring the coherent one-phonon scattering of X-rays from a $sim$1.2 mg single-crystal specimen, the largest available single crystal for this compound. The results are compared against ab initio phonon dispersions computed within the first-principles density functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation plus Hubbard $U$ correlation (GGA+$U$) approach, taking into account third-order anharmonicity effects in the quasiharmonic approximation. Good agreement with the experiment is obtained for calculations with an on-site Coulomb parameter $U = 4$ eV and Hunds exchange $J= 0.6$ eV in line with previous electronic structure calculations. We further compute the thermal expansion, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, phonon linewidth, and thermal phonon softening, and compare with available experiments. The theoretical and measured heat capacities are in close agreement with another. About 27% of the calculated thermal conductivity is due to phonons with energy higher than 25 meV ($sim$ 6 THz ), suggesting an important role of high-energy optical phonons in the heat transport. The simulated thermal expansion reproduces well the experimental data up to about 1000 K, indicating a failure of the quasiharmonic approximation above this limit.

We provide a first-principle, materials-specific theory of multipolar order and superexchange in NpO$_2$ by means of a non-collinear local-density approximation +$U$ (LDA+$U$) method. Our calculations offer a precise microscopic description of the triple-$q$-antiferro ordered phase in the absence of any dipolar moment. We find that, while the most common non-dipolar degrees of freedom (e.g., electric quadrupoles and magnetic octupoles) are active in the ordered phase, both the usually neglected higher-order multipoles (electric hexadecapoles and magnetic triakontadipoles) have at least an equally significant effect.

We have investigated the grain boundary scattering effect on the thermal transport behavior of uranium dioxide (UO$_2$). The polycrystalline samples having different grain-sizes (0.125, 1.8, and 7.2 $mu$m) have been prepared by spark plasma sintering technique and characterized by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy. The thermal transport properties (the thermal conductivity and thermoelectric power) have been measured in the temperature range 2-300~K and the results were analyzed in terms of various physical parameters contributing to the thermal conductivity in these materials in relation to grain-size. We show that thermal conductivity decreases systematically with lowering grain-size in the temperatures below 30 K, where the boundary scattering dominates the thermal transport. At higher temperatures more scattering processes are involved in the heat transport in these materials, making the analysis difficult. We determined the grain boundary Kapitza resistance that would result in the observed increase in thermal conductivity with grain size, and compared the value with Kapitza resistances calculated for UO$_2$ using molecular dynamics from the literature.
We report on the crystal structure, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, electrical and thermoelectrical properties of AmPd5Al2, the americium counterpart of the unconventional superconductor NpPd5Al2. AmPd5Al2 crystallizes in the ZrNi2Al5-type of structure with lattice parameters: a = 4.1298 A and c = 14.7925 A. Magnetic measurements of AmPd5Al2 indicate a paramagnetic behavior with no hint of magnetic ordering nor superconductivity down to 2 K. This aspect is directly related to its 5f6 electronic configuration with J = 0. The specific heat measurements confirm the non magnetic ground state of this compound. The low temperature electronic specific heat gamma_el = 20 mJ mol-1K-2 is clearly enhanced as compared to americium metal. All transport measurements obtained point to a metallic behavior in AmPd5Al2.
In recent years, there has been an intense interest in understanding the microscopic mechanism of thermally induced magnetization switching driven by a femtosecond laser pulse. Most of the effort has been dedicated to periodic crystalline structures while the amorphous counterparts have been less studied. By using a multiscale approach, i.e. first-principles density functional theory combined with atomistic spin dynamics, we report here on the very intricate structural and magnetic nature of amorphous Gd-Fe alloys for a wide range of Gd and Fe atomic concentrations at the nanoscale level. Both structural and dynamical properties of Gd-Fe alloys reported in this work are in good agreement with previous experiments. We calculated the dynamic behavior of homogeneous and inhomogeneous amorphous Gd-Fe alloys and their response under the influence of a femtosecond laser pulse. In the homogeneous sample, the Fe sublattice switches its magnetization before the Gd one. However, the temporal sequence of the switching of the two sublattices is reversed in the inhomogeneous sample. We propose a possible explanation based on a mechanism driven by a combination of the Dzyaloshiskii-Moriya interaction and exchange frustration, modeled by an antiferromagnetic second-neighbour exchange interaction between Gd atoms in the Gd-rich region. We also report on the influence of laser fluence and damping effects in the all-thermal switching.
In the exploration of new osmium based double perovskites, Sr2FeOsO6 is a new insertion in the existing family. The polycrystalline compound has been prepared by solid state synthesis from the respective binary oxides. PXRD analysis shows the structure is pseudo-cubic at room temperature, whereas low-temperature synchrotron data refinements reveal the structure to be tetragonal, space group I4/m. Heat capacity and magnetic measurements of Sr2FeOsO6 indicated the presence of two magnetic phase transitions at T1 = 140 K and T2 = 67 K. Band structure calculations showed the compound as a narrow energy gap semiconductor, which supports the experimental results obtained from the resistivity measurements. The present study documents significant structural and electronic effects of substituting Fe3+ for Cr3+ ion in Sr2CrOsO6.
