We report on magneto-transport measurements on low-density, large-area monolayer epitaxial graphene devices grown on SiC. We show that the zero-energy Landau level (LL) in monolayer graphene, which is predicted to be magnetic field ($B$)-independent, can float up above the Fermi energy at low $B$. This is supported by the temperature ($T$)-driven flow diagram approximated by the semi-circle law as well as the $T$-independent point in the Hall conductivity $sigma_{xy}$ near $e^2/h$. Our experimental data are in sharp contrast to conventional understanding of the zeroth LL and metallic-like behavior in pristine graphene prepared by mechanical exfoliation at low $T$. This surprising result can be ascribed to substrate-induced sublattice symmetry breaking which splits the degeneracy of the zeroth Landau level. Our finding provides a unified picture regarding the metallic behavior in pristine graphene prepared by mechanical exfoliation, and the insulating behavior and the insulator-quantum Hall transition in monolayer epitaxial graphene.

Non-diagonal (bond) disorder in graphene broadens Landau levels (LLs) in the same way as random potential. The exception is the zeroth LL, $n=0$, which is robust to the bond disorder, since it does not mix different $n=0$ states within a given valley. The mechanism of broadening of the $n=0$ LL is the inter-valley scattering. Several numerical simulations of graphene with bond disorder had established that $n=0$ LL is not only anomalously narrow but also that its shape is very peculiar with three maxima, one at zero energy, $E=0$, and two others at finite energies $pm E$. We study theoretically the structure of the states in $n=0$ LL in the presence of bond disorder. Adopting the assumption that the bond disorder is strongly anisotropic, namely, that one type of bonds is perturbed much stronger than other two, allowed us to get an analytic expression for the density of states which agrees with numerical simulations remarkably well. On the qualitative level, our key finding is that delocalization of $E=0$ state has a dramatic back effect on the density of states near $E=0$. The origin of this unusual behavior is the strong correlation of eigenstates in different valleys.
The quantum Hall effect near the charge neutrality point in bilayer graphene is investigated in high magnetic fields of up to 35 T using electronic transport measurements. In the high field regime, the eight-fold degeneracy in the zero energy Landau level is completely lifted, exhibiting new quantum Hall states corresponding filling factors $ u=$0, 1, 2, & 3. Measurements of the activation energy gap in tilted magnetic fields suggest that the Landau level splitting at the newly formed $ u=$1, 2, & 3 filling factors are independent of spin, consistent with the formation of a quantum Hall ferromagnet. In addition, measurements taken at the $ u$ = 0 charge neutral point show that, similar to single layer graphene, the bilayer becomes insulating at high fields.
Transport measurements on an etched graphene nanoribbon are presented. It is shown that two distinct voltage scales can be experimentally extracted that characterize the parameter region of suppressed conductance at low charge density in the ribbon. One of them is related to the charging energy of localized states, the other to the strength of the disorder potential. The lever arms of gates vary by up to 30% for different localized states which must therefore be spread in position along the ribbon. A single-electron transistor is used to prove the addition of individual electrons to the localized states. In our sample the characteristic charging energy is of the order of 10 meV, the characteristic strength of the disorder potential of the order of 100 meV.
The wavefunction of massless Dirac fermions is a two-component spinor. In graphene, a one-atom-thick film showing two-dimensional Dirac-like electronic excitations, the two-component representation reflects the amplitude of the electron wavefunction on the A and B sublattices. This unique property provides unprecedented opportunities to image the two components of massless Dirac fermions spatially. Here we report atomic resolution imaging of the two-component Dirac-Landau levels in a gapped graphene monolayer by scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy. A gap of about 20 meV, driven by inversion symmetry breaking by the substrate potential, is observed in the graphene on both SiC and graphite substrates. Such a gap splits the n = 0 Landau level (LL) into two levels, 0+ and 0-. We demonstrate that the amplitude of the wavefunction of the 0- LL is mainly at the A sites and that of the 0+ LL is mainly at the B sites of graphene, characterizing the internal structure of the spinor of the n = 0 LL. This provides direct evidence of the two-component nature of massless Dirac fermions.

We demonstrate that surface relaxation, which is insignificant in trilayer graphene, starts to manifest in Bernal-stacked tetralayer graphene. Bernal-stacked few-layer graphene has been investigated by analyzing its Landau level spectra through quantum capacitance measurements. We find that in trilayer graphene, the interlayer interaction parameters were similar to that of graphite. However, in tetralayer graphene, the hopping parameters between the bulk and surface bilayers are quite different. This shows a direct evidence for the surface relaxation phenomena. In spite of the fact that the Van der Waals interaction between the carbon layers is thought to be insignificant, we suggest that the interlayer interaction is an important factor in explaining the observed results and the symmetry-breaking effects in graphene sublattice are not negligible.
