Minimal Dark Matter (MDM) is a theoretical framework highly appreciated for its minimality and yet its predictivity. Of the two only viable candidates singled out in the original analysis, the scalar eptaplet has been found to decay too quickly to be around today, while the fermionic quintuplet is now being probed by indirect Dark Matter (DM) searches. It is therefore timely to critically review the MDM paradigm, possibly pointing out generalizations of this framework. We propose and explore two distinct directions. One is to abandon the assumption of DM electric neutrality in favor of absolutely stable, millicharged DM candidates which are part of $SU(2)_{text{L}}$ multiplets with integer isospin. Another possibility is to lower the cutoff of the model, which was originally fixed at the Planck scale, to allow for DM decays. We find new viable MDM candidates and study their phenomenology in detail.

We study a simple class of dark matter models with N_f copies of electroweak fermionic multiplets, stabilized by O(N_F) global symmetry. Unlike conventional minimal dark matter which usually suffers from Landau poles, in these models the gauge coupling g_2 has a non-trivial ultraviolet fixed point, and thus is asymptotically safe as long as N_F is large enough. These fermionic n-plet models have only two free parameters: N_F and a common mass M_DM, which relate to dark matter relic abundance. We find that the mass of triplet fermionic dark matter with N_F being dozens of flavors can be several hundred GeV, which is testable on LHC. A benefit of large N_F is that DM pair annihilation rate in dwarf galaxies is effectively suppressed by 1/N_F, and thus they can evade the constraint from gamma-ray continuous spectrum observation. For the case of triplets, we find that the models in the range 3 <= N_F <= 20 are consistent with all current experiments. However, for N_F quintuplets, even with large N_F they are still disfavored by the gamma-ray continuous spectrum.
The observation of the cosmic 21-cm spectrum can serve as a probe for Dark Matter properties. We point out that the knowledge of the signal amplitude at a given redshift allows one to put conservative bounds on the DM decay rate which are independent of astrophysical parameters. These limits are valid for the vast majority of DM models, those without extra IGM cooling or additional background radiation. Using the experimental results reported by the EDGES collaboration, we derive bounds that are stronger than the ones derived from other CMB observations and competitive with the ones from indirect detection.
We investigate different neutrino signals from the decay of dark matter particles to determine the prospects for their detection, and more specifically if any spectral signature can be disentangled from the background in present and future neutrino observatories. If detected, such a signal could bring an independent confirmation of the dark matter interpretation of the dramatic rise in the positron fraction above 10 GeV recently observed by the PAMELA satellite experiment and offer the possibility of distinguishing between astrophysical sources and dark matter decay or annihilation. In combination with other signals, it may also be possible to distinguish among different dark matter decay channels.

We show that the existence of new, light gauge interactions coupled to Standard Model (SM) neutrinos give rise to an abundance of sterile neutrinos through the sterile neutrinos mixing with the SM. Specifically, in the mass range of MeV-GeV and coupling of $g sim 10^{-6} - 10^{-2}$, the decay of this new vector boson in the early universe produces a sufficient quantity of sterile neutrinos to account for the observed dark matter abundance. Interestingly, this can be achieved within a natural extension of the SM gauge group, such as a gauged $L_mu-L_tau$ number, without any tree-level coupling between the new vector boson and the sterile neutrino states. Such new leptonic interactions might also be at the origin of the well-known discrepancy associated with the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon.

A recent paper investigated minimal R$ u$MDM models with the type T1-iii and T3 one-loop topologies. However, the candidate most-minimal model does not possess an accidental symmetry - the scalar potential contains an explicit symmetry breaking term, rendering the dark matter unstable. We present two models that cure this problem. However, we further show that all of the proposed minimal one-loop R$ u$MDM models suffer from a second problem - an additional source of explicit $Z_2$ symmetry breaking in the Yukawa sector. We perform a more-general analysis to show that neutrino mass models using either the type T3 or type T1-iii one-loop topologies do not give viable minimal dark matter candidates. Consequently, one-loop models of neutrino mass with minimal dark matter do not appear possible. Thus, presently there remains a single known (three-loop) model of neutrino mass that gives stable dark matter without invoking any new symmetries.
