Co doped ZnV2O4 has been investigated by Synchrotron X-ray diffraction, Magnetization measurement and Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis. With Co doping in the Zn site the system moves towards the itinerant electron limit. From Synchrotron and magnetization measurement it is observed that there is an effect in bond lengths and lattice parameters around the magnetic transition temperature. The EXAFS study indicates that Co ion exists in the High spin state in Co doped ZnV2O4.

We present a crystal field theory of transition metal impurities in semiconductors in a trigonally distorted tetrahedral coordination. We develop a perturbative scheme to treat covalency effects within the weak ligand field case (Coulomb interaction dominates over one-particle splitting) and apply it to ZnO:Co$^{2+}$ (3d$^7$). Using the large value of the charge transfer energy $Delta_{pd}$ compared to the $p$-$d$ hoppings, we perform a canonical transformation which eliminates the coupling with ligands to first order. As a result, we obtain an effective single-ion Hamiltonian, where the influence of the ligands is reduced to the one-particle crystal field acting on $d$-like-functions. This derivation allows to elucidate the microscopic origin of various crystal field parameters and covalency reduction factors which are usually used empirically for the interpretation of optical and ESR experiments. The connection of these parameters with the geometry of the local environment becomes transparent. The experimentally known $g$-values and the zero-field splitting 2D are very well reproduced by the exact diagonalization of the effective single-ion Hamiltonian with only one adjustable parameter $Delta _{pd}$. Alternatively to the numerical diagonalization we use perturbation theory in the weak field scheme (Coulomb interaction $gg$ cubic splitting $gg$ trigonal splitting and spin-orbit coupling) to derive compact analytical expressions for the spin-Hamiltonian parameters that reproduce the result of exact diagonalization within 20% of accuracy.

We report the synthesis and characterization of bulk form diluted magnetic semiconductors I-II-V Li1.1(Zn1-xCrx)As (x = 0.03, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15)with a cubic crystal structure identical to that of III-V GaAs and II-VI zinc-blende ZnSe. With p-type carriers created by excess Li, 10% Cr substitution for Zn results in a ferromagnetic ordering below TC ~ 218 K. Li(Zn,Cr)As represents another magnetic semiconducting system with the advantage of decoupling carriers and spins, where carriers are created by adding extra Li and spins are introduced by Cr substitution for Zn.
Magnetoresistance (MR) of the Bi$_{2-x}$Pb$_x$Sr$_2$Co$_2$O$_y$ ($x$=0, 0.3, 0.4) single crystals is investigated systematically. A nonmonotonic variation of the isothermal in-plane and out-of-plane MR with the field is observed. The out-of-plane MR is positive in high temperatures and increases with decreasing $T$, and exhibits a pronounced hump, and changes the sign from positive to negative at a centain temperature. These results strongly suggest that the observed MR consists of two contributions: one emph{negative} and one emph{positive} component. The isothermal MR in high magnetic fields follows a $H^2$ law. While the negative contribution comes from spin scattering of carriers by localized-magnetic-moments based on the Khosla-Fischer model.
Recently, rutile RuO$_2$ has raised interest for its itinerant antiferromagnetism, crystal Hall effect, and strain-induced superconductivity. Understanding and manipulating these properties demands resolving the electronic structure and the relative roles of the rutile crystal field and $4d$ spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, we use O-K and Ru $M_3$ x-ray absorption (XAS) and Ru $M_3$ resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to disentangle the contributions of crystal field, SOC, and electronic correlations in RuO$_2$. The locally orthorhombic site symmetry of the Ru ions introduces significant crystal field contributions beyond the approximate octahedral coordination yielding a crystal field energy scale of $Delta(t_{2g})approx 1$ eV breaking the degeneracy of the $t_{2g}$ orbitals. This splitting exceeds the Ru SOC ($approx160$ meV) suggesting a more subtle role of SOC, primarily through the modification of itinerant (rather than local) $4d$ electronic states, ultimately highlighting the importance of the local symmetry in RuO$_2$. Remarkably, our analysis can be extended to other members of the rutile family, thus advancing the comprehension of the interplay among crystal field symmetry, electron correlations, and SOC in transition metal compounds with the rutile structure.

Our powder inelastic neutron scattering data indicate that zvo is a system of spin chains that are three dimensionally tangled in the cubic phase above 50 K due to randomly occupied $t_{2g}$ orbitals of V$^{3+}$ ($3d^2$) ions. Below 50 K in the tetragonal phase, the chains become straight due to antiferro-orbital ordering. This is evidenced by the characteristic wave vector dependence of the magnetic structure factor that changes from symmetric to asymmetric at the cubic-to-tetragonal transition.
