The effects of visible and infrared light on potassium atoms embedded in a nanoporous glass matrix are investigated. Photodesorption by visible light enhances the atomic mobility and causes the formation of metallic nanoparticles. Two different populations of metastable clusters with absorption bands in the near-infrared and infrared are grown as a consequence of illumination. Atoms can move between the two groups through sequences of adsorption/desorption events at the pore surface. Irradiation with infrared light, instead, does not significantly enhance the atomic diffusion inside the pores. However, it induces relevant modifications of the substrate, thus changing its interaction with the assembled clusters. Consequently, infrared light alters the dynamics of the system, affecting also the evolution of non-resonant nanoparticles populations, even after the illumination sequence. These results provide new insights on the photo-induced modifications of the substrate-adsorbate interaction in nano-sized confined systems.

We formulate the theory of the perturbation caused by an adsorbate upon the substrate lattice in terms of a local modification of the interatomic potential energy around the adsorption site, which leads to the relaxation of substrate atoms. We apply the approach to CO chemisorption on close-packed metal surfaces, and show that the adsorbate-adsorbate interaction and a variety of other properties can be well described by a simple model.
MXenes are two-dimensional materials with a rich set of remarkable chemical and electromagnetic properties, the latter including saturable absorption and intense surface plasmon resonances. To fully harness the functionality of MXenes for applications in optics, electronics and sensing, it is important to understand the interaction of light with MXenes on atomic and femtosecond dimensions. Here, we use ultrafast electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy to investigate the laser-induced structural dynamics of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets. We find an exceptionally fast lattice response with an electron-phonon coupling time of 230 femtoseconds. Repetitive femtosecond laser excitation transforms Ti3C2Tx through a structural transition into a metamaterial with deeply sub-wavelength nanoripples that are aligned with the laser polarization. By a further laser illumination, the material is reversibly photo-switchable between a flat and rippled morphology. The resulting nanostructured MXene metamaterial with directional nanoripples is expected to exhibit an anisotropic optical and electronic response as well as an enhanced chemical activity that can be switched on and off by light.

We report the observation of photo-induced plasmon-phonon coupled modes in the group IV-VI semiconductor PbTe using Fourier-transform inelastic X-ray scattering at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). We measure the near-zone-center dispersion of the heavily screened longitudinal optical (LO) phonon branch as extracted from differential changes in x-ray diffuse scattering intensity following above band gap photoexcitation.
The magnetic and magnetotransport properties of single crystalline La1-x-yPryCaxMnO3 (x=0.42, y=0.40) thin films (~140 nm) deposited on (110) oriented LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 substrates exhibit a crossover from the high temperature antiferromagnetic-charge ordered insulator (AFM-COI) phase (T>TN) to strain glass (T<Tg). At intermediate temperatures (Tg<T<TN) dynamical liquid having prominent thermal-magneto-resistive hysteresis dominates in the cooling cycle, while in the warming cycle it is preceded by ferromagnetic metal (FMM) phase. Magnetic field required to drive AFM-COI to FMM phase transition are higher than that for the strain glass. The magneto-electric nature and temperature span of the distinct magnetic regimes are sensitive to the thermal cycling and substrate induced strain.
Atomic motion of a photo-induced coherent phonon of bismuth (Bi) is directly observed with time-resolved x-ray diffraction under a cryogenic temperature. It is found that displacive excitation in a fully symmetric A$_{mathrm{1g}}$ phonon mode is suppressed at a temperature $T = 9$ K. This result implies a switching of the phonon-generation mechanism from displacive to impulsive excitation with decreasing the temperature. It is comprehensibly understandable in a framework of stimulated Raman scattering. The suppression of displacive excitation also indicates that the adiabatic potential surface deviates from a parabolic one, which is assumed to be realized at room temperature. This study points out important aspects of phonon generation in transient phonon-induced quantum phenomena.
