This paper presents a first mathematical convergence analysis of a Fock states feedback stabilization scheme via single-photon corrections. This measurement-based feedback has been developed and experimentally tested in 2012 by the cavity quantum electrodynamics group of Serge Haroche and Jean-Michel Raimond. Here, we consider the infinite-dimensional Markov model corresponding to the ideal set-up where detection errors and feedback delays have been disregarded. In this ideal context, we show that any goal Fock state can be stabilized by a Lyapunov-based feedback for any initial quantum state belonging to the dense subset of finite rank density operators with support in a finite photon-number sub-space. Closed-loop simulations illustrate the performance of the feedback law.

Quantum states can be stabilized in the presence of intrinsic and environmental losses by either applying active feedback conditioned on an ancillary system or through reservoir engineering. Reservoir engineering maintains a desired quantum state through a combination of drives and designed entropy evacuation. We propose and implement a quantum reservoir engineering protocol that stabilizes Fock states in a microwave cavity. This protocol is realized with a circuit quantum electrodynamics platform where a Josephson junction provides direct, nonlinear coupling between two superconducting waveguide cavities. The nonlinear coupling results in a single photon resolved cross-Kerr effect between the two cavities enabling a photon number dependent coupling to a lossy environment. The quantum state of the microwave cavity is discussed in terms of a net polarization and is analyzed by a measurement of its steady state Wigner function.
We introduce an optomechanical scheme for the probabilistic preparation of single-phonon Fock states of mechanical modes based on photo-subtraction. The quality of the produced mechanical state is confirmed by a number of indicators, including phonon statistics and conditional fidelity. We assess the detrimental effect of parameters such as the temperature of the mechanical system and address the feasibility of the scheme with state-of-the-art technology.
Advanced quantum technologies, as well as fundamental tests of quantum physics, crucially require the interference of multiple single photons in linear-optics circuits. This interference can result in the bunching of photons into higher Fock states, leading to a complex bosonic behaviour. These challenging tasks timely require to develop collective criteria to benchmark many independent initial resources. Here we determine whether n independent imperfect single photons can ultimately bunch into the Fock state $|n rangle$. We thereby introduce an experimental Fock-state bunching capability for single-photon sources, which uses phase-space interference for extreme bunching events as a quantifier. In contrast to autocorrelation functions, this operational approach takes into account not only residual multi-photon components but also vacuum admixture and the dispersion of the individual photon statistics. We apply this approach to high-purity single photons generated from an optical parametric oscillator and show that they can lead to a Fock-state capability of at least 14. Our work demonstrates a novel collective benchmark for single-photon sources and their use in subsequent stringent applications.

We present a unified convergence analysis for first order convex optimization methods using the concept of strong Lyapunov conditions. Combining this with suitable time scaling factors, we are able to handle both convex and strong convex cases, and establish contraction properties of Lyapunov functions for many existing ordinary differential equation models. Then we derive prevailing first order optimization algorithms, such as proximal gradient methods, heavy ball methods (also known as momentum methods), Nesterov accelerated gradient methods, and accelerated proximal gradient methods from numerical discretizations of corresponding dynamical systems. We also apply strong Lyapunov conditions to the discrete level and provide a more systematical analysis framework. Another contribution is a novel second order dynamical system called Hessian-driven Nesterov accelerated gradient flow which can be used to design and analyze accelerated first order methods for smooth and non-smooth convex optimizations.
Quantum blockade and entanglement play important roles in quantum information and quantum communication as quantum blockade is an effective mechanism to generate single photons (phonons) and entanglement is a crucial resource for quantum information processing. In this work, we propose a method to generate single entangled photon-phonon pairs in a hybrid optomechanical system. We show that photon blockade, phonon blockade, and photon-phonon correlation and entanglement can be observed via the atom-photon-phonon (tripartite) interaction, under the resonant atomic driving. The correlated and entangled single photons and single phonons, i.e., single entangled photon-phonon pairs, can be generated in both the weak and strong tripartite interaction regimes. Our results may have important applications in the development of highly complex quantum networks.
