Dark energy is often assumed to be composed by a single scalar field. The background cosmic expansion is not sufficient to determine whether this is true or not. We study multi-field scalar-tensor models with a general dark matter source and write the observable modified gravity parameters (effective gravitational constant and anisotropic stress) in the form of a ratio of polynomials in the Fourier wavenumber k of order 2N, where N is the number of scalar fields. By comparing these observables to real data it is in principle possible to determine the number of dark energy scalar fields coupled to gravity. We also show that there are no realistic non-trivial cases in which the order of the polynomials is reduced.

In the framework of the Einstein-Maxwell-axion-aether theory we establish the model, the Lagrangian of which contains the sin-type generalization of the term describing the axion-photon coupling, and the axionically induced cosine-type modification of the term attributed to the dilaton-photon interactions. The extension of the axion-dilaton-aether electrodynamics is inspired by the Jacksons idea concerning the internal symmetry of the equations of electromagnetism. The application of the extended theory to the anisotropic homogeneous cosmological model of the Bianchi-I type is considered. The exact solutions to the model evolutionary equations are obtained for the case, when the axionic dark matter is in the state of equilibrium, which is characterized by vanishing potential of the pseudoscalar field and its first derivative. The state of the axion-photon system, which is of a new type and is indicated as a dynamic equilibrium, is studied in the framework of electrodynamics with axionic non-linearity. We show that the nonlinear axion-photon interactions can mimic the dilaton-photon coupling. We discuss the stability of the model with respect to homogeneous fluctuations of the axion field.

Recently, Amendola et al. proposed a geometrical theory of gravity containing higher-order derivative terms. The authors introduced anticurvature scalar $(A)$, which is the trace of the inverse of the Ricci tensor ($A^{mu u} = R_{mu u}^{-1}$). In this work, we consider two classes of Ricci-inverse -- Class I and Class II -- models. Class I models are of the form $f(R, A)$ where $f$ is a function of Ricci and anticurvature scalars. Class II models are of the form ${cal F}(R, A^{mu u}A_{mu u})$ where ${cal F}$ is a function of Ricci scalar and square of anticurvature tensor. For both these classes of models, we numerically solve the modified Friedmann equations in the redshift range $1500 < z < 0$. We show that the late-time evolution of the Universe, i.e., evolution from matter-dominated epoch to accelerated expansion epoch, can not be explained by these two classes of models. Using the reduced action approach, we show why we can not bypass the no-go theorem for Ricci-inverse gravity models. Finally, we discuss the implications of our analysis for the early-Universe cosmology.

The standard model of cosmology assumes that the Universe can be described to hover around a homogeneous-isotropic solution of Einsteins general theory of relativity. This description needs (sometimes hidden) hypotheses that restrict the generality, and relaxing these restrictions is the headline of a new physical approach to cosmology that refurnishes the cosmological framework. Considering a homogeneous geometry as a template geometry for the in reality highly inhomogeneous Universe must be considered a strong idealization. Unveiling the limitations of the standard model opens the door to rich consequences of general relativity, giving rise to effective (i.e. spatially averaged) cosmological models that may even explain the longstanding problems of dark energy and dark matter. We explore in this talk the influence of structure formation on average properties of the Universe by discussing: (i) general thoughts on why considering average properties, on the key-issue of non-conserved curvature, and on the global gravitational instability of the standard model of cosmology; (ii) the general set of cosmological equations arising from averaging the scalar parts of Einsteins equations, the generic property of structure formation interacting with the average properties of the Universe in a scale-dependent way, and the description of cosmological backreaction in terms of an effective scalar field.

We have found a mechanism which regulates the dark energy in our universe. With an emergent conformal symmetry, the dark energy density is regulated to the order of a conformal anomaly parameter in the conformally coupled gravity. In the late time cosmological evolution, we have obtained a set of exact cosmological equations which deviate from the Friedmann equations significantly. Based on the recent observational cosmic expansion data, it is shown that the dark energy density is about 1/4 of the matter density at present, which is quite smaller than determined by General Relativity. The jerk parameter at present is also determined as a definite value 0.47.
We formulate Barrow holographic dark energy, by applying the usual holographic principle at a cosmological framework, but using the Barrow entropy instead of the standard Bekenstein-Hawking one. The former is an extended black-hole entropy that arises due to quantum-gravitational effects which deform the black-hole surface by giving it an intricate, fractal form. We extract a simple differential equation for the evolution of the dark energy density parameter, which possesses standard holographic dark energy as a limiting sub-case, and we show that the scenario can describe the universe thermal history, with the sequence of matter and dark energy eras. Additionally, the new Barrow exponent $Delta$ significantly affects the dark energy equation of state, and according to its value it can lead it to lie in the quintessence regime, in the phantom regime, or experience the phantom-divide crossing during the evolution.
