The effect of orbital degrees of freedom on the exchange interactions in the spin-1 quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet CaV2O4 is systematically studied. For this purpose a realistic low-energy model with the parameters derived from the first-principles calculations is constructed. The exchange interactions are calculated using both the theory of infinitesimal spin rotations near the mean-field ground state and the superexchange model, which provide a consistent description. The obtained behaviour of exchange interactions substantially differs from the previously proposed phenomenological picture based on the magnetic measurements and structural considerations, namely: (i) Despite quasi-one-dimensional character of the crystal structure, consisting of the zigzag chains of edge-sharing VO6 octahedra, the electronic structure is essentially three-dimensional, that leads to finite interactions between the chains; (ii) The exchange interactions along the legs of the chains appear to dominate; and (iii) There is a substantial difference of exchange interactions in two crystallographically inequivalent chains. The combination of these three factors successfully reproduces the behaviour of experimental magnetic susceptibility.

Yttrium Iron Garnet is the ubiquitous magnetic insulator used for studying pure spin currents. The exchange constants reported in the literature vary considerably between different experiments and fitting procedures. Here we calculate them from first-principles. The local Coulomb correction (U - J) of density functional theory is chosen such that the parameterized spin model reproduces the experimental Curie temperature and a large electronic band gap, ensuring an insulating phase. The magnon spectrum calculated with our parameters agrees reasonably well with that measured by neutron scattering. A residual disagreement about the frequencies of optical modes indicates the limits of the present methodology.
Different stoichiometric configurations of graphane and graphene fluoride are investigated within density functional theory. Their structural and electronic properties are compared, and we indicate the similarities and differences among the various configurations. Large differences between graphane and graphene fluoride are found that are caused by the presence of charges on the fluorine atoms. A new configuration that is more stable than the boat configuration is predicted for graphene fluoride. We also perform GW calculations for the electronic band gap of both graphene derivatives. These band gaps and also the calculated Youngs moduli are at variance with available experimental data. This might indicate that the experimental samples contain a large number of defects or are only partially covered with H or F.
Heusler alloys have been intensively studied due to the wide variety of properties that they exhibit. One of these properties is of particular interest for technological applications, i.e. the fact that some Heusler alloys are half-metallic. In the following, a systematic study of the magnetic properties of three different Heusler families $textrm{Co}_2textrm{Mn}textrm{Z}$, $text{Co}_2text{Fe}text{Z}$ and $textrm{Mn}_2textrm{V}textrm{Z}$ with $text{Z}=left(text{Al, Si, Ga, Ge}right)$ is performed. A key aspect is the determination of the Gilbert damping from first principles calculations, with special focus on the role played by different approximations, the effect that substitutional disorder and temperature effects. Heisenberg exchange interactions and critical temperature for the alloys are also calculated as well as magnon dispersion relations for representative systems, the ferromagnetic $textrm{Co}_2textrm{Fe}textrm{Si}$ and the ferrimagnetic $textrm{Mn}_2textrm{V}textrm{Al}$. Correlations effects beyond standard density-functional theory are treated using both the local spin density approximation including the Hubbard $U$ and the local spin density approximation plus dynamical mean field theory approximation, which allows to determine if dynamical self-energy corrections can remedy some of the inconsistencies which were previously reported for these alloys.
We report synthesis and magnetic properties of quasi-one-dimensional spin-$frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain compound BaNa$_2$Cu(VO$_4$)$_2$. This orthovanadate has a centrosymmetric crystal structure, $C2/c$, where the magnetic Cu$^{2+}$ ions form spin chains. These chains are arranged in layers, with the chain direction changing by 62$^0$ between the two successive layers. Alternatively, the spin lattice can be viewed as anisotropic triangular layers upon taking the inter-chain interactions into consideration. Despite this potential structural complexity, temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, ESR intensity, and NMR shift agree well with the uniform spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chain model with an intrachain coupling of $J/k_{rm B} simeq 5.6$ K. The saturation field obtained from the magnetic isotherm measurement consistently reproduces the value of $J/k_{rm B}$. Further, the $^{51}$V NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate mimics the 1D character in the intermediate temperature range, whereas magnetic long-range order sets in below $T_{rm N} simeq 0.25$ K. The effective interchain coupling is estimated to be $J_{perp}/k_{rm B} simeq 0.1$ K. The theoretical estimation of exchange couplings using band-structure calculations reciprocate our experimental findings and unambiguously establish the 1D character of the compound. Finally, the spin lattice of BaNa$_2$Cu(VO$_4$)$_2$ is compared with the chemically similar but not isostructural compound BaAg$_2$Cu(VO$_4)_2$.
First-principles calculations, in combination with the four-state energy mapping method, are performed to extract the magnetic interaction parameters of multiferroic BiFeO$_3$. Such parameters include the symmetric exchange (SE) couplings and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions up to second nearest neighbors, as well as the single ion anisotropy (SIA). All magnetic parameters are obtained not only for the $R3c$ structural ground state, but also for the $R3m$ and $Rbar{3}c$ phases in order to determine the effects of ferroelectricity and antiferrodistortion distortions, respectively, on these magnetic parameters. In particular, two different second-nearest neighbor couplings are identified and their origins are discussed in details. Moreover, Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations using a magnetic Hamiltonian incorporating these first-principles-derived interaction parameters are further performed. They result (i) not only in the accurate prediction of the spin-canted G-type antiferromagnetic structure and of the known magnetic cycloid propagating along a $<$1$bar{1}$0$>$ direction, as well as their unusual characteristics (such as a weak magnetization and spin-density-waves, respectively); (ii) but also in the finding of another cycloidal state of low-energy and that awaits to be experimentally confirmed. Turning on and off the different magnetic interaction parameters in the MC simulations also reveal the precise role of each of them on magnetism.
