Heterogeneous face recognition (HFR) refers to matching face imagery across different domains. It has received much interest from the research community as a result of its profound implications in law enforcement. A wide variety of new invariant features, cross-modality matching models and heterogeneous datasets being established in recent years. This survey provides a comprehensive review of established techniques and recent developments in HFR. Moreover, we offer a detailed account of datasets and benchmarks commonly used for evaluation. We finish by assessing the state of the field and discussing promising directions for future research.

Face recognition is one of the most studied research topics in the community. In recent years, the research on face recognition has shifted to using 3D facial surfaces, as more discriminating features can be represented by the 3D geometric information. This survey focuses on reviewing the 3D face recognition techniques developed in the past ten years which are generally categorized into conventional methods and deep learning methods. The categorized techniques are evaluated using detailed descriptions of the representative works. The advantages and disadvantages of the techniques are summarized in terms of accuracy, complexity and robustness to face variation (expression, pose and occlusions, etc). The main contribution of this survey is that it comprehensively covers both conventional methods and deep learning methods on 3D face recognition. In addition, a review of available 3D face databases is provided, along with the discussion of future research challenges and directions.
A non-parametric low-resolution face recognition model for resource-constrained environments with limited networking and computing is proposed in this work. Such environments often demand a small model capable of being effectively trained on a small number of labeled data samples, with low training complexity, and low-resolution input images. To address these challenges, we adopt an emerging explainable machine learning methodology called successive subspace learning (SSL).SSL offers an explainable non-parametric model that flexibly trades the model size for verification performance. Its training complexity is significantly lower since its model is trained in a one-pass feedforward manner without backpropagation. Furthermore, active learning can be conveniently incorporated to reduce the labeling cost. The effectiveness of the proposed model is demonstrated by experiments on the LFW and the CMU Multi-PIE datasets.

Heterogeneous Face Recognition (HFR) refers to matching cross-domain faces and plays a crucial role in public security. Nevertheless, HFR is confronted with challenges from large domain discrepancy and insufficient heterogeneous data. In this paper, we formulate HFR as a dual generation problem, and tackle it via a novel Dual Variational Generation (DVG-Face) framework. Specifically, a dual variational generator is elaborately designed to learn the joint distribution of paired heterogeneous images. However, the small-scale paired heterogeneous training data may limit the identity diversity of sampling. In order to break through the limitation, we propose to integrate abundant identity information of large-scale visible data into the joint distribution. Furthermore, a pairwise identity preserving loss is imposed on the generated paired heterogeneous images to ensure their identity consistency. As a consequence, massive new diverse paired heterogeneous images with the same identity can be generated from noises. The identity consistency and identity diversity properties allow us to employ these generated images to train the HFR network via a contrastive learning mechanism, yielding both domain-invariant and discriminative embedding features. Concretely, the generated paired heterogeneous images are regarded as positive pairs, and the images obtained from different samplings are considered as negative pairs. Our method achieves superior performances over state-of-the-art methods on seven challenging databases belonging to five HFR tasks, including NIR-VIS, Sketch-Photo, Profile-Frontal Photo, Thermal-VIS, and ID-Camera. Current face recognition tasks are usually carried out on high-quality face images, but in reality, most face images are captured under unconstrained or poor conditions, e.g., by video surveillance. Existing methods are featured by learning data uncertainty to avoid overfitting the noise, or by adding margins to the angle or cosine space of the normalized softmax loss to penalize the target logit, which enforces intra-class compactness and inter-class discrepancy. In this paper, we propose a deep Rival Penalized Competitive Learning (RPCL) for deep face recognition in low-resolution (LR) images. Inspired by the idea of the RPCL, our method further enforces regulation on the rival logit, which is defined as the largest non-target logit for an input image. Different from existing methods that only consider penalization on the target logit, our method not only strengthens the learning towards the target label, but also enforces a reverse direction, i.e., becoming de-learning, away from the rival label. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that our method improves the existing state-of-the-art methods to be very robust for LR face recognition.
Face identification/recognition has significantly advanced over the past years. However, most of the proposed approaches rely on static RGB frames and on neutral facial expressions. This has two disadvantages. First, important facial shape cues are ignored. Second, facial deformations due to expressions can have an impact on the performance of such a method. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for dynamic 3D face identification/recognition based on facial keypoints. Each dynamic sequence of facial expressions is represented as a spatio-temporal graph, which is constructed using 3D facial landmarks. Each graph node contains local shape and texture features that are extracted from its neighborhood. For the classification/identification of faces, a Spatio-temporal Graph Convolutional Network (ST-GCN) is used. Finally, we evaluate our approach on a challenging dynamic 3D facial expression dataset.
