Levy flights are random walks in which the probability distribution of the step sizes is fat-tailed. Levy spatial diffusion has been observed for a collection of ultra-cold Rb atoms and single Mg+ ions in an optical lattice. Using the semiclassical theory of Sisyphus cooling, we treat the problem as a coupled Levy walk, with correlations between the length and duration of the excursions. The problem is related to the area under Bessel excursions, overdamped Langevin motions that start and end at the origin, constrained to remain positive, in the presence of an external logarithmic potential. In the limit of a weak potential, the Airy distribution describing the areal distribution of the Brownian excursion is found. Three distinct phases of the dynamics are studied: normal diffusion, Levy diffusion and, below a certain critical depth of the optical potential, x~ t^{3/2} scaling. The focus of the paper is the analytical calculation of the joint probability density function from a newly developed theory of the area under the Bessel excursion. The latter describes the spatiotemporal correlations in the problem and is the microscopic input needed to characterize the spatial diffusion of the atomic cloud. A modified Montroll-Weiss (MW) equation for the density is obtained, which depends on the statistics of velocity excursions and meanders. The meander, a random walk in velocity space which starts at the origin and does not cross it, describes the last jump event in the sequence. In the anomalous phases, the statistics of meanders and excursions are essential for the calculation of the mean square displacement, showing that our correction to the MW equation is crucial, and points to the sensitivity of the transport on a single jump event. Our work provides relations between the statistics of velocity excursions and meanders and that of the diffusivity.

We investigate experimentally a two-dimensional rocking ratchet for cold atoms, realized by using a driven three-beam dissipative optical lattice. AC forces are applied in perpendicular directions by phase-modulating two of the lattice beams. As predicted by the general theory [S. Denisov et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 224102 (2008)], we observe a rectification phenomenon unique to high-dimensional rocking ratchets, as determined by two single-harmonic drivings applied in orthogonal directions. Also, by applying two bi-harmonic forces in perpendicular directions, we demonstrate the possibility of generating a current in an arbitrary direction within the optical lattice plane.

Several years ago, in the context of the physics of hysteresis in magnetic materials, a simple stochastic model has been introduced: the ABBM model. Later, the ABBM model has been advocated as a paradigm for a broad class of diverse phenomena, baptised crackling noise phenomena. The model reproduces many statistical features of such intermittent signals, as the statistics of burst (or avalanche) durations and sizes, with their power law exponents that would characterise the dynamics as critical. Beyond such critical exponents, the measure of the average shape of the avalanche has also been proposed. Here, the exact calculation of average and fluctuations of the avalanche shape for the ABBM model is presented, showing that its normalised shape is independent from the external drive. Moreover, average and fluctuations of the multi-avalanche shape, that is a sequence of avalanches of fixed total duration, is also computed. Surprisingly, the two quantities (avalanche and multi-avalanche normalised shapes) are identical. This result is obtained using the exact solution of the ABBM model, obtained leveraging the equivalence with the Cox-Ingersoll-Ross process (CIR), through an exact time change. A presentation of this and other known exact results is provided: notably the correspondence of the ABBM/CIR model with the generalised Bessel process, describing the dynamics of the modulus of the multi dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. As a consequence, the correspondence between the excursion (avalanche) and bridge (multi-avalanche) shape distributions, turns to apply to all the aforementioned stochastic processes. In simple words: considering the distance from the origin of such diffusive particles, the (normalised) average shape (and fluctuations) of its trajectory until a return in a time T is the same, whether it has returned before T or not.
A microscopic definition of the thermodynamic entropy in an isolated quantum system must satisfy (i) additivity, (ii) extensivity and (iii) the second law of thermodynamics. We show that the diagonal entropy, which is the Shannon entropy in the energy eigenbasis at each instant of time, meets the first two requirements and that the third requirement is satisfied if an arbitrary external operation is performed at typical times. In terms of the diagonal entropy, thermodynamic irreversibility follows from the facts that the Hamiltonian dynamics restricts quantum trajectories under unitary evolution and that the external operation is performed without referring to any particular information about the microscopic state of the system.
We develop a microscopic approach to the consistent construction of the kinetic theory of dilute weakly ionized gases of hydrogen-like atoms. The approach is based on the framework of the second quantization method in the presence of bound states of particles and the method of reduced description of relaxation processes. Within the approach we developed the first-order perturbation theory over the weak interaction for a system of kinetic equations for the Wigner distribution functions of free fermions of both kinds and their bound states, the hydrogen-like atoms. It is shown that the conditions of low-temperature approximation, of the gas non-degeneracy and the approximation of weak interaction are realistic and can be met in a wide range of temperatures and the densities of the studied system. We obtain dispersion equations for determining the frequency and wave attenuation coefficients in dilute weakly ionized gas of hydrogen-like atoms near the described equilibrium state. In the two-level atom approximation it is shown that in the system there are longitudinal waves of matter polarization and transverse waves with the behavior characteristic of plasmon polaritons. The expressions for the dependence of the frequency and the Landau damping coefficients on the wave vector for all branches of the oscillations detected, are obtained. Quantitative estimations of the characteristics of the elementary perturbations in the system on an example of a weakly ionized dilute gas of Na-23 atoms are presented. The possibility of using the results of the theory developed to describe the properties of a Bose condensate of photons in dilute weakly ionized gas of hydrogen-like atoms is noted and the directions of its generalizations are discussed.
Recent investigations call attention to the dynamics of anomalous diffusion and its connection with basic principles of statistical mechanics. We present here a short review of those ideas and their implications.
