Synthesis of a series of layered iron arsenides Ca1-xRExFeAs2 (112) was attempted by heating at 1000 C under a high-pressure of 2 GPa. The 112 phase successfully forms with RE = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu and Gd, while Tb, Dy and Ho substituted and RE free samples does not contain the 112 phase. The Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu and Gd doped Ca1-xRExFeAs2 are new compounds. All of them exhibit superconducting transition except for the Ce doped sample. The behaviour of the critical temperature, with the RE ionic radii have been investigated.

Dependence of superconducting properties of (Ca,RE)(Fe,TM)As2 [(Ca,RE)112, TM: Co, Ni)] on RE elements (RE = La-Gd) was systematically investigated. Improvement of superconducting properties by Co or Ni co-doping was observed for all (Ca,RE)112, which is similar to Co-co-doped (Ca,La)112 or (Ca,Pr)112. Tc of Co-co-doped samples decreased from 38 K for RE = La to 29 K for RE = Gd with decreasing ionic radii of RE3+. However, Co-co-doped (Ca,Eu)112 showed exceptionally low Tc = 21 K probably due to the co-existence of Eu3+ and Eu2+ suggested by longer interlayer distance dFe-Fe of (Ca,Eu)112 than other (Ca,RE)112.
We report the electrical, magneto transport and specific heat of the layered polycrystalline RECoPO (RE = La, Nd and Sm) samples. These compounds are iso-structural to recently discovered superconductor LaFeAs(O/F). Bulk polycrystalline samples are synthesized by solid state reaction route in an evacuated sealed quartz tube. All these compounds are crystallized in a tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm. The Cobalt in these compounds is in itinerant state with its paramagnetic moment above 1.4muB and the same orders ferromagnetically (FM) with saturation moment of around 0.20muB below say 80K. Though, LaCoPO shows single paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic (FM) transition near 35K, the NdCoPO and SmCoPO exhibit successive PM-FM-AFM transitions. Both FM and AFM transition temperatures vary with applied field. Although the itinerant ferromagnetism occurs with small saturation moment, typical anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) transitions (TN1, TN2) are observed at 69K and 14K for Nd and 57K and 45K for Sm. This FM-AFM transition of Co spins in NdCoPO and SmCoPO is both field and temperature dependent. The Magneto-transport of NdCoPO and SmCoPO distinctly follows their successive PM-FM-AFM transitions. It is clear that Sm/Nd (4f) interacts with the Co (3d) in first time synthesized Sm/NdCoPO.
One of the most important properties of very recently reported FeSe based superconductors is the robustness of their superconductivity under applied magnetic field. The synthesis and control of superconductivity in FeSe based compounds is rather a difficult task. Synthesis and physical property characterization for optimized superconductivity of FeSe1/2Te1/2 at 13 K is reported here. The compound crystallized in a tetragonal structure with lattice parameters a = 3.8008(10) and c = 6.0187 (15) A. Magnetization measurements indicated bulk superconductivity with lower critical field (Hc1) of around 180 Oe. By applying Ginzburg Landau (GL) theory, the Hc2(0) value is estimated to be = 1840 kOe for the 90% of resistive transition. A heat capacity measurement revealed bulk superconductivity by a hump at Tc near 13 K, and an expected decrease was observed under an applied magnetic field.
We report on synthesis, structural characterization, resistivity, magnetic and thermal expansion measurements on the as yet unexplored $delta$-phase of FeSe$_{1-x}$, here synthesized under ambient- (AP) and high-pressure (HP) conditions. We show that in contrast to $beta$-FeSe$_{1-x}$, monophasic superconducting $delta$-FeSe$_{1-x}$ can be obtained in off-stoichiometric samples with excess Fe atoms preferentially residing in the van der Waals gap between the FeSe layers. The AP $delta$-FeSe$_{1-x}$ sample studied here ($T_c$ $simeq$ 8.5,K) possesses an unprecedented residual resistivity ratio RRR $simeq$ 16. Thermal expansion data reveal a small feature around $sim$90,K, which resembles the anomaly observed at the structural and magnetic transitions for other Fe-based superconductors, suggesting that some kind of magnetic state is formed also in FeSe. %indicative of a fluctuating magnetic ordering. For HP samples (RRR $simeq$ 3), the disorder within the FeSe layers is enhanced through the introduction of vacancies, the saturated magnetic moment of Fe is reduced and only spurious superconductivity is observed.
In this article we review our studies of the K0.80Fe1.76Se2 superconductor, with an attempt to elucidate the crystal growth details and basic physical properties over a wide range of temperatures and applied magnetic field, including anisotropic magnetic and electrical transport properties, thermodynamic, London penetration depth, magneto-optical imaging and Mossbauer measurements. We find that: (i) Single crystals of similar stoichiometry can be grown both by furnace-cooled and decanted methods; (ii) Single crystalline K0.80Fe1.76Se2 shows moderate anisotropy in both magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity and a small modulation of stoichiometry of the crystal, which gives rise to broadened transitions; (iii) The upper critical field, Hc2(T) is ~ 55 T at 2 K for H||c, manifesting a temperature dependent anisotropy that peaks near 3.6 at 27 K and drops to 2.5 by 18 K; (iv) Mossbauer measurements reveal that the iron sublattice in K0.80Fe1.76Se2 clearly exhibits magnetic order, probably of the first order, from well below Tc to its Neel temperature of Tn = 532 +/- 2 K. It is very important to note that, although, at first glance there is an apparent dilemma posed by these data: high Tc superconductivity in a near insulating, large ordered moment material, analysis indicates that the sample may well consist of two phases with the minority superconducting phase (that does not exhibit magnetic order) being finely distributed, but connected with in an antiferromagnetic, poorly conducting, matrix, essentially making a superconducting aerogel.
