This paper reports the design and cold test of the cavity beam position monitor (CBPM) for SX-FEL to fulfill the requirement of beam position measurement resolution of less than 1{mu}m, even 0.1{mu}m. The CBPM was optimized by using a coupling slot to damp the TM010 mode in the output signal. The isolation of TM010 mode is about 117dB, and the shunt impedance is about 200{Omega}@4.65GHz with the quality factor 80 from MAFIA simulation and test result. A special antenna was designed to load power for reducing excitation of other modes in the cavity. The resulting output power of TM110 mode was about 90mV/mm when the source was 6dBm, and the accomplishable minimum voltage was about 200{mu}V. The resolution of the CBPM was about 0.1{mu}m from the linear fitting result based on the cold test.

IP-BPM (Interaction Point Beam Position Monitor) is an ultra high resolution cavity BPM to be used at ATF2, a test facility for ILC final focus system. Control of beam position in 2 nm precision is required for ATF2. Beam tests at ATF extraction line proved a 8.7 nm position resolution.
On the wake of the results obtained so far at the SPARC_LAB test-facility at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (Italy), we are currently investigating the possibility to design and build a new multi-disciplinary user-facility, equipped with a soft X-ray Free Electron Laser (FEL) driven by a $sim$1 GeV high brightness linac based on plasma accelerator modules. This design study is performed in synergy with the EuPRAXIA design study. In this paper we report about the recent progresses in the on going design study of the new facility.
This paper describes an effective frequency doubler scheme for SASE free electron lasers. It consists of an undulator tuned to the first harmonic, a dispersion section, and a tapered undulator tuned to the second harmonic. The first stage is a conventional soft X-ray SASE FEL. Its gain is controlled in such a way that the maximum energy modulation of the electron beam at the exit is about equal to the local energy spread, but still far away from saturation. When the electron bunch passes through the dispersion section this energy modulation leads to effective compression of the particles. Then the bunched electron beam enters the tapered undulator and produces strong radiation in the process of coherent deceleration. We demonstrate that a frequency doubler scheme can be integrated into the SASE FEL at the TESLA Test Facility at DESY, and will allow to reach 3 nm wavelength with GW-level of output peak power. This would extend the operating range of the FEL into the so-called water window and significantly expand the capabilities of the TTF FEL user facility.

In order to develop an RF cavity that is applicable for a muon beam cooling channel, a new facility, called Mucool Test Area (MTA) has been built at Fermilab. MTA is a unique facility whose purpose is to test RF cavities in various conditions. There are 201 and 805 MHz high power sources, a 4-Tesla solenoid magnet, a cryogenic system including a Helium liquifier, an explosion proof apparatus to operate gaseous/liquid Hydrogen, and a beam transport line to send an intense H- beam from the Fermilab Linac accelerator to the MTA hall. Recent activities at MTA will be discussed in this document.
We explore the possibility of operating a SASE FEL with a Storage Ring. We use a semi-analytical model to obtain the evolution inside the undulator by taking into account the interplay on the laser dynamics due to the induced energy spread and to the radiation damping. We obtain the Renieris limit for the stationary output power and discuss the possibility of including in our model the effect of the beam instabilities.
