The greedy spanner is a high-quality spanner: its total weight, edge count and maximal degree are asymptotically optimal and in practice significantly better than for any other spanner with reasonable construction time. Unfortunately, all known algorithms that compute the greedy spanner of n points use Omega(n^2) space, which is impractical on large instances. To the best of our knowledge, the largest instance for which the greedy spanner was computed so far has about 13,000 vertices. We present a O(n)-space algorithm that computes the same spanner for points in R^d running in O(n^2 log^2 n) time for any fixed stretch factor and dimension. We discuss and evaluate a number of optimizations to its running time, which allowed us to compute the greedy spanner on a graph with a million vertices. To our knowledge, this is also the first algorithm for the greedy spanner with a near-quadratic running time guarantee that has actually been implemented.
Solomon and Elkin constructed a shortcutting scheme for weighted trees which results in a 1-spanner for the tree metric induced by the input tree. The spanner has logarithmic lightness, logarithmic diameter, a linear number of edges and bounded degree (provided the input tree has bounded degree). This spanner has been applied in a series of papers devoted to designing bounded degree, low-diameter, low-weight $(1+epsilon)$-spanners in Euclidean and doubling metrics. In this paper, we present a simple local routing algorithm for this tree metric spanner. The algorithm has a routing ratio of 1, is guaranteed to terminate after $O(log n)$ hops and requires $O(Delta log n)$ bits of storage per vertex where $Delta$ is the maximum degree of the tree on which the spanner is constructed. This local routing algorithm can be adapted to a local routing algorithm for a doubling metric spanner which makes use of the shortcutting scheme.
Cartograms are popular for visualizing numerical data for map regions. Maintaining correct adjacencies is a primary quality criterion for cartograms. When there are multiple data values per region (over time or different datasets) shown as animated or juxtaposed cartograms, preserving the viewers mental-map in terms of stability between cartograms is another important criterion. We present a method to compute stable Demers cartograms, where each region is shown as a square and similar data yield similar cartograms. We enforce orthogonal separation constraints with linear programming, and measure quality in terms of keeping adjacent regions close (cartogram quality) and using similar positions for a region between the different data values (stability). Our method guarantees ability to connect most lost adjacencies with minimal leaders. Experiments show our method yields good quality and stability.
We provide exact and approximation methods for solving a geometric relaxation of the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) that occurs in curve reconstruction: for a given set of vertices in the plane, the problem Minimum Perimeter Polygon (MPP) asks for a (not necessarily simply connected) polygon with shortest possible boundary length. Even though the closely related problem of finding a minimum cycle cover is polynomially solvable by matching techniques, we prove how the topological structure of a polygon leads to NP-hardness of the MPP. On the positive side, we show how to achieve a constant-factor approximation. When trying to solve MPP instances to provable optimality by means of integer programming, an additional difficulty compared to the TSP is the fact that only a subset of subtour constraints is valid, depending not on combinatorics, but on geometry. We overcome this difficulty by establishing and exploiting additional geometric properties. This allows us to reliably solve a wide range of benchmark instances with up to 600 vertices within reasonable time on a standard machine. We also show that using a natural geometry-based sparsification yields results that are on average within 0.5% of the optimum.
For a polygonal domain with $h$ holes and a total of $n$ vertices, we present algorithms that compute the $L_1$ geodesic diameter in $O(n^2+h^4)$ time and the $L_1$ geodesic center in $O((n^4+n^2 h^4)alpha(n))$ time, respectively, where $alpha(cdot)$ denotes the inverse Ackermann function. No algorithms were known for these problems before. For the Euclidean counterpart, the best algorithms compute the geodesic diameter in $O(n^{7.73})$ or $O(n^7(h+log n))$ time, and compute the geodesic center in $O(n^{11}log n)$ time. Therefore, our algorithms are significantly faster than the algorithms for the Euclidean problems. Our algorithms are based on several interesting observations on $L_1$ shortest paths in polygonal domains.
A terrain is an $x$-monotone polygon whose lower boundary is a single line segment. We present an algorithm to find in a terrain a triangle of largest area in $O(n log n)$ time, where $n$ is the number of vertices defining the terrain. The best previous algorithm for this problem has a running time of $O(n^2)$.
