We present first-principles density functional theory (DFT) investigations of mechanical, thermodynamic and optical properties of synthesized inverse-perovskites Sc3InX (X = B, C, N). The elastic constants at zero pressure and temperature are calculated and the anisotropic behavior of the compounds is illustrated. All the three materials are shown to be brittle in nature. The computed Peierls stress, approximately 3 to 5 times larger than of a selection of MAX phases, show that dislocation movement may follow but with much reduced occurrences compared to these MAX phases. The Mulliken bonding population and charge density maps show stronger covalency between Sc and X atoms compared with Sc-Sc bond. The Vickers hardness values of Sc3InX are predicted to be between 3.03 and 3.88 GPa. The Fermi surfaces of Sc3InX contain both hole- and electron-like topology which changes as one replaces B with C or N. The bulk modulus, specific heats, thermal expansion coefficient, and Debye temperature are calculated as a function both temperature and pressure using the quasi-harmonic Debye model with phononic effects. The results so obtained are analysed in comparison to the characteristics of other related compounds. Moreover optical functions are calculated and discussed for the first time. The reflectivity is found to be high in the IR-UV regions up to ~ 10.7 eV (Sc3InB, Sc3InC) and 12.3 eV (Sc3InN), thus showing promise as good coating materials. In this paper, we employ CASTEP based on DFT (density functional theory) calculations to investigate various physical properties of BaVO3, SrVO3, CaVO3 and PbVO3. The elastic constants, bulk modulus, Shear modulus, Youngs modulus, Pughs ratio, Poissons ratio, Vickers hardness, universal anisotropy index and Peierls stress are calculated to rationalize the mechanical behavior of the aforementioned compounds. The study of electronic band structure and density of states (DOS) reveal the strong evidence of metallic behavior for all the perovskites. The analysis of bonding properties exhibits the existence of covalent, ionic and metallic bonds. The optical properties of AVO3 have been carried out and are discussed in this paper as well. The analysis of phonon property implies the dynamical stability of BaVO3 but not for SrVO3, CaVO3 and PbVO3. The values of Debye temperature and minimum thermal conductivity imply that only PbVO3 compound has potential to be used as TBC material.
We present computer simulations of liquid and solid phases of condensed methane at pressures below 25 GPa, between 150 and 300 K, where no appreciable molecular dissociation occurs. We used molecular dynamics (MD) and metadynamics techniques, and empirical potentials in the rigid molecule approximation, whose validity was confirmed a posteriori by carrying out it ab initio MD simulations for selected pressure and temperature conditions. Our results for the melting line are in satisfactory agreement with existing measurements. We find that the fcc crystal transforms into a hcp structure with 4 molecules per unit cell (B phase) at about 10 GPa and 150 K, and that the B phase transforms into a monoclinic high pressure phase above 20 GPa. Our results for solid/solid phase transitions are consistent with those of Raman studies but the phase boundaries estimated in our calculations are at higher pressure than those inferred from spectroscopic data.
Given the consensus that pressure improves cation order in most of known materials, a discovery of pressure-induced disorder could require reconsideration of order-disorder transition in solid state physics/chemistry and geophysics. Double perovskites Y2CoIrO6 and Y2CoRuO6 synthesized at ambient pressure show B-site order, while the polymorphs synthesized at 6 and 15 GPa are partially-ordered and disordered respectively. With the decrease of ordering degrees, the lattices are shrunken and the crystal structures alter from monoclinic to orthorhombic symmetry. Correspondingly, long-range ferrimagnetic order in the B-site ordered phases are gradually overwhelmed by B-site disorder. Theoretical calculations suggest that unusual unit cell compressions under external pressures unexpectedly stabilize the disordered phases of Y2CoIrO6 and Y2CoRuO6.
Boron rich chalcogenides have been predicted to have excellent properties for optical and mechanical applications in recent times. In this regard, we report the electronic, optical and mechanical properties of recently synthesized boron rich chalcogenide compounds, B12X (X = S and Se) using density functional theory for the first time. The effects of exchange and correlation functional on these properties are also investigated. The consistency of the obtained crystal structure with the reported experimental results has been checked in terms of lattice parameters. The considered materials are mechanically stable, brittle and elastically anisotropic. Furthermore, the elastic moduli and hardness parameters are calculated, which show that B12S is likely to be a prominent member of hard materials family compared to B12Se. The origin of different in hardness is explained on the basis of density of states near the Fermi level. Reasonably good values of fracture toughness and machinability index for B12X (X= S and Se) are reported. The melting point, Tm for the B12S and B12Se compounds suggests that both solids are stable, at least up to 4208 and 3577 K, respectively. Indirect band gap of B12S (2.27 eV) and B12Se (1.30 eV) are obtained using the HSE06 functional. The electrons of B12Se compound show lighter average effective mass compared to that of B12S compound, which signifies higher mobility of charge carriers in B12Se. The optical properties are characterized using GGA-PBE and HSE06 method and discussed in detail. These compounds possess bulk optical anisotropy and excellent absorption coefficients in visible light region along with very low static value of reflectivity spectra (range: 7.42-14.0% using both functionals) are noted. Such useful features of the compounds under investigation show promise for applications in optoelectronic and mechanical sectors.
We study the electronic and structural properties of substitutional impurities of graphenelike nanoporous materials C$_2$N, $tg$-, and $hg$-C$_3$N$_4$ by means of density functional theory calculations. We consider four types of impurities; boron substitution on carbon sites (B(C)), carbon substitution on nitrogen sites (C(N)), nitrogen substitution on carbon sites (N(C)), and sulfur substitution on nitrogen sites (S(N)). From cohesive energy calculations, we find that the C(N) and B(C) substitutions are the most energetically favorable and induce small bond modifications in the vicinity of the impurity, while the S(N) induces strong lattice distortions. Though all of the studied impurities induce defect levels inside the band gap of these materials, their electronic properties are poles apart depending on the behavior of the impurity as an acceptor or a donor. It is also observed that acceptor (donor) wavefunctions are composed only of $sigma$ ($pi$) orbitals from the impurity itself and/or neighboring sites. Consequently, acceptor wavefunctions are directed towards the pores and donor wavefunctions are more extended throughout the neighboring atoms, a property that could further be explored to modify the interaction between these materials and adsorbates. Moreover, impurity properties display a strong site sensitivity and ground state binding energies ranging from $0.03$ to $1.13$ eV, thus offering an interesting route for tuning the optical properties of these materials. Finally, spin-polarized calculations reveal that all impurity configurations have a magnetic ground state that rises from the spin splitting of the impurity levels. In a few configurations, more than one impurity level can be found inside the gap and two of them could potentially be explored as two-level systems for single-photon emission, following similar proposals recently made on defect complexes on TMDCs.
