Extending our previous work, we explore the breathing mode---the [uniform] radial expansion and contraction of a spatially confined system. We study the breathing mode across the transition from the ideal quantum to the classical regime and confirm that it is not independent of the pair interaction strength (coupling parameter). We present the results of time-dependent Hartree-Fock simulations for 2 to 20 fermions with Coulomb interaction and show how the quantum breathing mode depends on the particle number. We validate the accuracy of our results, comparing them to exact Configuration Interaction results for up to 8 particles.

We outline a procedure for using matrix mechanics to compute energy eigenvalues and eigenstates for two and three interacting particles in a confining trap, in one dimension. Such calculations can bridge a gap in the undergraduate physics curriculum between single-particle and many-particle quantum systems, and can also provide a pathway from standard quantum mechanics course material to understanding current research on cold-atom systems. In particular we illustrate the notion of fermionization and how it occurs not only for the ground state in the presence of strong repulsive interactions, but also for excited states, in both the strongly attractive and strongly repulsive regimes.

We propose a Real-Space Gutzwiller variational approach and apply it to a system of repulsively interacting ultracold fermions with spin 1/2 trapped in an optical lattice with a harmonic confinement. Using the Real-Space Gutzwiller variational approach, we find that in system with balanced spin-mixtures on a square lattice, antiferromagnetism either appears in a checkerboard pattern or forms a ring and antiferromagnetic order is stable in the regions where the particle density is close to one, which is consistent with the recent results obtained by the Real-Space Dynamical Mean-field Theory approach. We also investigate the imbalanced case and find that antiferromagnetic order is suppressed there.
A continuum of excitations in interacting one-dimensional systems is bounded from below by a spectral edge that marks the lowest possible excitation energy for a given momentum. We analyse short-range interactions between Fermi particles and between Bose particles (with and without spin) using Bethe-Ansatz techniques and find that the dispersions of the corresponding spectral edge modes are close to a parabola in all cases. Based on this emergent phenomenon we propose an empirical model of a free, non-relativistic particle with an effective mass identified at low energies as the bare electron mass renormalised by the dimensionless Luttinger parameter $K$ (or $K_sigma$ for particles with spin). The relevance of the Luttinger parameters beyond the low energy limit provides a more robust method for extracting them experimentally using a much wide range of data from the bottom of the one-dimensional band to the Fermi energy. The empirical model of the spectral edge mode complements the mobile impurity model to give a description of the excitations in proximity of the edge at arbitrary momenta in terms of only the low energy parameters and the bare electron mass. Within such a framework, for example, exponents of the spectral function are expressed explicitly in terms of only a few Luttinger parameters.
By means of time-dependent density-matrix renormalization-group (TDMRG) we are able to follow the real-time dynamics of a single impurity embedded in a one-dimensional bath of interacting bosons. We focus on the impurity breathing mode, which is found to be well-described by a single oscillation frequency and a damping rate. If the impurity is very weakly coupled to the bath, a Luttinger-liquid description is valid and the impurity suffers an Abraham-Lorentz radiation-reaction friction. For a large portion of the explored parameter space, the TDMRG results fall well beyond the Luttinger-liquid paradigm.

We measure the position- and momentum- space breathing dynamics of trapped one-dimensional Bose gases. The profile in real space reveals sinusoidal width oscillations whose frequency varies continuously through the quasicondensate to ideal Bose gas crossover. A comparison with theoretical models taking into account the effect of finite temperature is provided. In momentum space, we report the first observation of a frequency doubling in the quasicondensate regime, corresponding to a self-reflection mechanism. The disappearance of this mechanism through the quasicondensation crossover is mapped out.
