By treating idealized zeolite frameworks as periodic mechanical trusses, we show that the number of flexible folding mechanisms in zeolite frameworks is strongly peaked at the minimum density end of their flexibility window. 25 of the 197 known zeolite frameworks exhibit an extensive flexibility, where the number of unique mechanisms increases linearly with the volume when long wavelength mechanisms are included. Extensively flexible frameworks therefore have a maximum in configurational entropy, as large crystals, at their lowest density. Most real zeolites do not exhibit extensive flexibility, suggesting that surface and edge mechanisms are important, likely during the nucleation and growth stage. The prevalence of flexibility in real zeolites suggests that, in addition to low framework energy, it is an important criterion when searching large databases of hypothetical zeolites for potentially useful realizable structures.

Phosphorene has been rediscovered recently, establishing itself as one of the most promising two dimensional group-V elemental monolayers with direct band gap, high carrier mobility, and anisotropic electronic properties. In this letter, the buckling and its effect on the electronic properties in phosphorene are investigated by using molecular dynamics simulations and complemented by density functional theory calculations. We find that phosphorene shows superior out-of-plane structural flexibility along the armchair direction, which allows the formation of buckling with large curvatures, while the buckling along the zigzag direction will break its structure integrity at large curvatures. The semiconducting and direct band gap nature are retained with buckling along the armchair direction; the band gap decreases and transforms to an indirect band gap with buckling along the zigzag direction. The structural flexibility and electronic robustness along the armchair direction facilitate the fabrication of devices with complex shapes, such as folded phosphorene and phosphorene nano-scrolls, thereby offering new possibilities for the application of phosphorene in flexible electronics and optoelectronics.
In our previous study [Phys. Rev. B 86, 201104 (2012)] we introduced the so called quasi-non-uniform gradient-level exchange-correlation approximation (QNA) and demonstrated its strength in producing highly accurate equilibrium volumes for metals and their alloys within the density-functional theory. In this paper we extend the scheme to include the accuracy of bulk modulus as an additional figure of merit and show that this scheme is flexible enough as to allow the computation of accurate equilibrium volumes and bulk moduli at the same time. The power and feasibility of this scheme is demonstrated on NiAl and FeV binary alloys.
Using an electrochemically gated transistor, we achieved controlled and reversible doping of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) in a large concentration range. Our data open a wide energy-window view on the density of states (DOS) and show, for the first time, that the core of the DOS function is Gaussian, while the low-energy tail has a more complex structure. The hole mobility increases by more than four orders of magnitude when the electrochemical potential is scanned through the DOS.
We study the mechanical properties of two-dimensional (2D) boron, borophenes, by first-principles calculations. The recently synthesized borophene with 1/6 concentration of hollow hexagons (HH) is shown to have in-plane modulus C up to 210 N/m and bending stiffness as low as D = 0.39 eV. Thus, its Foppl-von Karman number per unit area, defined as C/D, reaches 568 nm-2, over twofold higher than graphenes value, establishing the borophene as one of the most flexible materials. Yet, the borophene has a specific modulus of 346 m2/s2 and ideal strengths of 16 N/m, rivaling those (453 m2/s2 and 34 N/m) of graphene. In particular, its structural fluxionality enabled by delocalized multi-center chemical bonding favors structural phase transitions under tension, which result in exceptionally small breaking strains yet highly ductile breaking behavior. These mechanical properties can be further tailored by varying the HH concentration, and the boron sheet without HHs can even be stiffer than graphene against tension. The record high flexibility combined with excellent elasticity in boron sheets can be utilized for designing composites and flexible systems.
Accurate calculations of electrostatic potentials and treatment of substrate polarizability are critical for predicting the permeation of ions inside water-filled nanopores. The {it ab initio} molecular dynamics method (AIMD), based on Density Functional Theory (DFT), accounts for the polarizability of materials, water, and solutes, and it should be the method of choice for predicting accurate electrostatic energies of ions. In practice, DFT coupled with the use of periodic boundary conditions in a charged system leads to large energy shifts. Results obtained using different DFT packages may vary because of the way pseudopotentials and long-range electrostatics are implemented. Using maximally localized Wannier functions, we apply robust corrections that yield relatively unambiguous ion energies in select molecular and aqueous systems and inside carbon nanotubes. Large binding energies are predicted for ions in metallic carbon nanotube arrays, while with consistent definitions Na$^+$ and Cl$^-$ energies are found to exhibit asymmetries comparable with those computed using non-polarizable water force fields.
