We are interested in simulating blood flow in arteries with variable elasticity with a one dimensional model. We present a well-balanced finite volume scheme based on the recent developments in shallow water equations context. We thus get a mass conservative scheme which also preserves equilibria of Q=0. This numerical method is tested on analytical tests.
We are interested in simulating blood flow in arteries with a one dimensional model. Thanks to recent developments in the analysis of hyperbolic system of conservation laws (in the Saint-Venant/ shallow water equations context) we will perform a simple finite volume scheme. We focus on conservation properties of this scheme which were not previously considered. To emphasize the necessity of this scheme, we present how a too simple numerical scheme may induce spurious flows when the basic static shape of the radius changes. On contrary, the proposed scheme is well-balanced: it preserves equilibria of Q = 0. Then examples of analytical or linearized solutions with and without viscous damping are presented to validate the calculations. The influence of abrupt change of basic radius is emphasized in the case of an aneurism.
The design and analysis of a unified asymptotic preserving (AP) and well-balanced scheme for the Euler Equations with gravitational and frictional source terms is presented in this paper. The asymptotic behaviour of the Euler system in the limit of zero Mach and Froude numbers, and large friction is characterised by an additional scaling parameter. Depending on the values of this parameter, the Euler system relaxes towards a hyperbolic or a parabolic limit equation. Standard Implicit-Explicit Runge-Kutta schemes are incapable of switching between these asymptotic regimes. We propose a time semi-discretisation to obtain a unified scheme which is AP for the two different limits. A further reformulation of the semi-implicit scheme can be recast as a fully-explicit method in which the mass update contains both hyperbolic and parabolic fluxes. A space-time fully-discrete scheme is derived using a finite volume framework. A hydrostatic reconstruction strategy, an upwinding of the sources at the interfaces, and a careful choice of the central discretisation of the parabolic fluxes are used to achieve the well-balancing property for hydrostatic steady states. Results of several numerical case studies are presented to substantiate the theoretical claims and to verify the robustness of the scheme.
We present a strategy for solving time-dependent problems on grids with local refinements in time using different time steps in different regions of space. We discuss and analyze two conservative approximations based on finite volume with piecewise constant projections and domain decomposition techniques. Next we present an iterative method for solving the composite-grid system that reduces to solution of standard problems with standard time stepping on the coarse and fine grids. At every step of the algorithm, conservativity is ensured. Finally, numerical results illustrate the accuracy of the proposed methods.
In this paper, we develop a well-balanced oscillation-free discontinuous Galerkin (OFDG) method for solving the shallow water equations with a non-flat bottom topography. One notable feature of the constructed scheme is the well-balanced property, which preserves exactly the hydrostatic equilibrium solutions up to machine error. Another feature is the non-oscillatory property, which is very important in the numerical simulation when there exist some shock discontinuities. To control the spurious oscillations, we construct an OFDG method with an extra damping term to the existing well-balanced DG schemes proposed in [Y. Xing and C.-W. Shu, CICP, 1(2006), 100-134.]. With a careful construction of the damping term, the proposed method achieves both the well-balanced property and non-oscillatory property simultaneously without compromising any order of accuracy. We also present a detailed procedure for the construction and a theoretical analysis for the preservation of the well-balancedness property. Extensive numerical experiments including one- and two-dimensional space demonstrate that the proposed methods possess the desired properties without sacrificing any order of accuracy.
In this paper, high order semi-implicit well-balanced and asymptotic preserving finite difference WENO schemes are proposed for the shallow water equations with a non-flat bottom topography. We consider the Froude number ranging from O(1) to 0, which in the zero Froude limit becomes the lake equations for balanced flow without gravity waves. We apply a well-balanced finite difference WENO reconstruction, coupled with a stiffly accurate implicit-explicit (IMEX) Runge-Kutta time discretization. The resulting semi-implicit scheme can be shown to be well-balanced, asymptotic preserving (AP) and asymptotically accurate (AA) at the same time. Both one- and two-dimensional numerical results are provided to demonstrate the high order accuracy, AP property and good performance of the proposed methods in capturing small perturbations of steady state solutions.
