We report the observation of the circular ac Hall effect where the current is solely driven by the crossed ac electric and magnetic fields of circularly polarized radiation. Illuminating an unbiased monolayer sheet of graphene with circularly polarized terahertz radiation at room temperature generates - under oblique incidence - an electric current perpendicular to the plane of incidence, whose sign is reversed by switching the radiation helicity. Alike the classical dc Hall effect, the voltage is caused by crossed electric and magnetic fields which are however rotating with the lights frequency.

The polarization of the spin current pumped by a precessing ferromagnet into an adjacent normal metal has a constant component parallel to the precession axis and a rotating one normal to the magnetization. The former component is now routinely detected in the form of a DC voltage induced by the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE). Here we compute AC-ISHE voltages much larger than the DC signals for various material combinations and discuss optimal conditions to observe the effect. Including the backflow of spins is essential for distilling parameters such as the spin Hall angle from ISHE-detected spin pumping experiments.

We develop an analytical theory of the low-frequency $ac$ quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect based upon the scattering matrix formalism. It is shown that the $ac$ QSH effect can be interpreted as a bulk quantum pumping effect. When the electron spin is conserved, the integer-quantized $ac$ spin Hall conductivity can be linked to the winding numbers of the reflection matrices in the electrodes, which also equal to the bulk spin Chern numbers of the QSH material. Furthermore, a possible experimental scheme by using ferromagnetic metals as electrodes is proposed to detect the topological $ac$ spin current by electrical means.
An intriguing feature of spintronics is the use of pure spin-currents to manipulate magnetization, e.g., spin-currents can switch magnetization in spin-torque MRAM, a next-generation DRAM alternative. Giant spin-currents via the spin Hall effect greatly expand the technological opportunities. Conversely, a ferromagnet/normal metal junction emits spin-currents under microwave excitation, i.e. spin-pumping. While such spin-currents are modulated at the excitation frequency, there is also a non-linear, rectified component that is commonly detected using the corresponding inverse spin Hall effect (iSHE) dc voltage. However, the ac component should be more conducive for quantitative analysis, as it is up to two orders of magnitude larger and linear. But any device that uses the ac iSHE is also sensitive to inductive signals via Faradays Law and discrimination of the ac iSHE signal must rely on phase-sensitive measurements. We use the inductive signal as a reference for a quantitative measurement of the magnitude and phase of the ac iSHE.
We theoretically study the quantum Hall effect (QHE) in graphene with an ac electric field. Based on the tight-binding model, the structure of the half-integer Hall plateaus at $sigma_{xy} = pm(n + 1/2)4e^2/h$ ($n$ is an integer) gets qualitatively changed with the addition of new integer Hall plateaus at $sigma_{xy} = pm n(4e^2/h)$ starting from the edges of the band center regime towards the band center with an increasing ac field. Beyond a critical field strength, a Hall plateau with $sigma_{xy} = 0$ can be realized at the band center, hence restoring fully a conventional integer QHE with particle-hole symmetry. Within a low-energy Hamiltonian for Dirac cones merging, we show a very good agreement with the tight-binding calculations for the Hall plateau transitions. We also obtain the band structure for driven graphene ribbons to provide a further understanding on the appearance of the new Hall plateaus, showing a trivial insulator behavior for the $sigma_{xy} = 0$ state. In the presence of disorder, we numerically study the disorder-induced destruction of the quantum Hall states in a finite driven sample and find that qualitative features known in the undriven disordered case are maintained.

Time-reversal invariance places strong constraints on the properties of the quantum spin Hall edge. One such restriction is the inevitability of dissipation in a Josephson junction between two superconductors formed on such an edge without the presence of interaction. Interactions and spin-conservation breaking are key ingredients for the realization of dissipationless ac Josephson effect on such quantum spin Hall edges. We present a simple quantum impurity model that allows to create a dissipationless fractional Josephson effect on a quantum spin Hall edge. We then use this model to substantiate a general argument that shows that any such non-dissipative Josephson effect must necessarily by $8pi$-periodic.
