We measure magnetotransport of F doped SmFeAsO samples up to 28T and we extract the upper critical fields, using different criteria. In order to circumvent the problem of criterion-dependence Hc2 values, we suggest a thermodynamic estimation of the upper critical field slope dHc2/dT based on the analysis of conductivity fluctuations in the critical regime. A high field slope as large as -12T/K is thus extracted for the optimally doped sample. We find evidence of a two-dimensional lowest Landau level (LLL) scaling for applied fields larger than mu_0H_LLL=8T. Finally, we estimate the coherence length values and we observe that they progressively increase with decreasing Tc. In all cases, the coherence length values along the c axis are smaller than the interplanar distance, confirming the two-dimensional nature of superconductivity in this compound.

Nanoscale defects in superconductors play a dominant role in enhancing superconducting properties through electron scattering, modulation of coherence length, and correlation with quantized magnetic flux. For iron-based superconductors (IBSCs) that are expected to be employed in high-field magnetic applications, a fundamental question is whether such defects develop an upper critical field (Hc2) similar to that of conventional BCS-type superconductors. Herein, we report the first demonstration of a significantly improved Hc2 in a 122-phase IBSC by introducing defects through high-energy milling. Co-doped Ba122 polycrystalline bulk samples (Ba(Fe,Co)2As2) were prepared by sintering powder which was partially mechanically alloyed through high-energy milling. A remarkable increase in full-width at half maximum of X-ray powder diffraction peaks, anomalous shrinkage in the a-axis, and elongation in the c-axis were observed. When lattice defects are introduced into the grains, semiconductor behavior of the electric resistivity at low temperature (T < 100 K), slight decrease in transition temperature (Tc), upturn of Hc2(T) near Tc, and a large increase in Hc2(T) slope were observed. The slope of Hc2(T) increased approximately by 50%, i.e., from 4 to 6 T/K, and exceeded that of single crystals and thin films. Defect engineering through high-energy milling is expected to facilitate new methods for the designing and tuning of Hc2 in 122-phase IBSCs.

We report large enhancement of upper critical field Hc2 observed in superconducting Sr2RuO4 thin films. Through dimensional crossover approaching two dimensions, Hc2 except the in-plane field direction is dramatically enhanced compared to bulks, following a definite relation distinct from bulk one between Hc2 and the transition temperature. The anomalous enhancement of Hc2 is highly suggestive of important changes of the superconducting properties, possibly accompanied with rotation of the triplet d-vector. Our findings will become a crucial step to further explore exotic properties by employing Sr2RuO4 thin films.
Ex-situ Powder-In-Tube MgB2 tapes prepared with ball-milled, undoped powders showed a strong enhancement of the irreversibility field H*, the upper critical field Hc2 and the critical current density Jc(H) together with the suppression of the anisotropy of all of these quantities. Jc reached 104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K and 10 T, with an irreversibility field of about 14 T at 4.2 K, and Hc2 of 9 T at 25 K, high values for not-doped MgB2. The enhanced Jc and H* values are associated with significant grain refinement produced by milling of the MgB2 powder, which enhances grain boundary pinning, although at the same time also reducing the connectivity from about 12% to 8%. Although enhanced pinning and diminished connectivity are in opposition, the overall influence of ball milling on Jc is positive because the increased density of grains with a size comparable with the mean free path produces strong electron scattering that substantially increases Hc2, especially Hc2 perpendicular to the Mg and B planes.
Superconductivity in the type-II Weyl semimetal candidate MoTe$_2$ has attracted much attention due to the possible realization of topological superconductivity. Under applied pressure, the superconducting transition temperature is significantly enhanced, while the structural transition from the high-temperature 1$T$ phase to the low-temperature $T_d$ phase is suppressed. Hence, applying pressure allows us to investigate the dimensionality of superconductivity in 1$T$-MoTe$_2$. We have performed a detailed study of the magnetotransport properties and upper critical field $H_{c2}$ of MoTe$_2$ under pressure. The magnetoresistance (MR) and Hall coefficient of MoTe$_2$ are found to be decreasing with increasing pressure. In addition, the Kohlers scalings for the MR data above $sim$11 kbar show a change of exponent whereas the data at lower pressure can be well scaled with a single exponent. These results are suggestive of a Fermi surface reconstruction when the structure changes from the $T_d$ to 1$T$ phase. The $H_{c2}$-temperature phase diagram constructed at 15 kbar, with $Hparallel ab$ and $Hperp ab$, can be satisfactorily described by the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model with the Maki parameters $alpha sim$ 0.77 and 0.45, respectively. The relatively large $alpha$ may stem from a small Fermi surface and a large effective mass of semimetallic MoTe$_2$. The angular dependence of $H_{c2}$ at 15 kbar can be well fitted by the Tinkham model, suggesting the two-dimensional nature of superconductivity in the high-pressure 1$T$ phase.
We present measurements of the superconducting critical temperature Tc and upper critical field Hc2 as a function of pressure in the transition metal dichalcogenide 2H-NbS2 up to 20 GPa. We observe that Tc increases smoothly from 6K at ambient pressure to about 8.9K at 20GPa. This range of increase is comparable to the one found previously in 2H-NbSe2. The temperature dependence of the upper critical field Hc2(T) of 2H-NbS2 varies considerably when increasing the pressure. At low pressures, Hc2(0) decreases, and at higher pressures both Tc and Hc2(0) increase simultaneously. This points out that there are pressure induced changes of the Fermi surface, which we analyze in terms of a simplified two band approach.
