We use the nonequilibrium dynamical mean field theory formalism to compute the equilibrium and nonequilibrium resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) signal of a strongly interacting fermionic lattice model with a coupling of dispersionless phonons to the total charge on a given site. In the atomic limit, this model produces phonon subbands in the spectral function, but not in the RIXS signal. Electron hopping processes however result in phonon-related modifications of the charge excitation peak. We discuss the equilibrium RIXS spectra and the characteristic features of nonequilibrium states induced by photo-doping and by the application of a static electric field. The latter produces features related to Wannier-Stark states, which are dressed with phonon sidebands. Thanks to the effect of field-induced localization, the phonon features can be clearly resolved even in systems with weak electron-phonon coupling.

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) detects various types of high- and low-energy elementary excitations in correlated solids, and this tool will play an increasingly important role in investigations of time-dependent phenomena in photo-excite d systems. While theoretical frameworks for the computation of equilibrium RIXS spectra are well established, the development of appropriate methods for nonequilibrium simulations are an active research field. Here, we apply a recently developed nonequilibrium dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) based approach to compute the RIXS response of photo-excited two-orbital Mott insulators. The results demonstrate the feasibility of multi-orbital nonequilibrium RIXS calculations and the sensitivity of the quasi-elastic fluorescence-like features and d-d excitation peaks on the nonequilibrium population of the Hubbard bands.
We study equilibrium and nonequilibrium properties of electron-phonon systems described by the Hubbard-Holstein model using the dynamical mean-field theory. In equilibrium, we benchmark the results for impurity solvers based on the one-crossing appro ximation and slave-rotor approximation against non-perturbative numerical renormalization group reference data. We also examine how well the low energy properties of the electron-boson coupled systems can be reproduced by an effective static electron-electron interaction. The one-crossing and slave-rotor approximations are then used to simulate insulator-to-metal transitions induced by a sudden switch-on of the electron-phonon interaction. The slave-rotor results suggest the existence of a critical electron-phonon coupling above which the system is transiently trapped in a non-thermal metallic state with coherent quasiparticles. The same quench protocol in the one-crossing approximation results in a bad metallic state.

We address the question whether observables of an exactly solvable model of electrons coupled to (optical) phonons relax into large time stationary state values and investigate if the asymptotic expectation values can be computed using a stationary d ensity matrix. Two initial nonequilibrium situations are considered. A sudden quench of the electron-phonon coupling, starting from the noninteracting canonical equilibrium at temperature T in the electron as well as in the phonon subsystems, leads to a rather simple dynamics. A richer time evolution emerges if the initial state is taken as the product of the phonon vacuum and the filled Fermi sea supplemented by a highly excited additional electron. Our model has a natural set of constants of motion, with as many elements as degrees of freedom. In accordance with earlier studies of such type of models we find that expectation values which become stationary can be described by the density matrix of a generalized Gibbs ensemble which differs from that of a canonical ensemble. For the model at hand it appears to be evident that the eigenmode occupancy operators should be used in the construction of the stationary density matrix.

We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of charge excitations in the electron-doped high-Tc superconductor Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4. The intraband and interband excitations across the Fermi energy are separated for the first time by tuni ng the experimental conditions properly to measure charge excitations at low energy. A dispersion relation with q-dependent width emerges clearly in the intraband excitation, while the intensity of the interband excitation is concentrated around 2 eV near the zone center. The experimental results are consistent with theoretical calculation of the RIXS spectra based on the Hubbard model.

We study the role of excited phonon populations in the relaxation rates of nonequilibrium electrons using a nonequilibrium Greens function formalism. The transient modifications in the phononic properties are accounted for by self-consistently solvin g the Dyson equation for the electron and phonon Greens functions. The pump induced changes manifest in both the electronic and phononic spectral functions. We find that the excited phonon populations suppress the decay rates of nonequilibrium electrons due to enhanced phonon absorption. The increased phonon occupation also sets the nonequilibrium decay rates and the equilibrium scattering rates apart. The decay rates are found to be time-dependent, and this is illustrated in the experimentally observed population decay of photoexcited $mathrm{Bi}_{1.5}mathrm{Sb}_{0.5} mathrm{Te}_{1.7}mathrm{Se}_{1.3}$.
