Chaos has revolutionized the field of nonlinear science and stimulated foundational studies from neural networks, extreme event statistics, to physics of electron transport. Recent studies in cavity optomechanics provide a new platform to uncover quintessential architectures of chaos generation and the underlying physics. Here we report the generation of dynamical chaos in silicon-based monolithic optomechanical oscillators, enabled by the strong and coupled nonlinearities of two-photon-absorption induced Drude electron-hole plasma. Deterministic chaotic oscillation is achieved, and statistical and entropic characterization quantifies the chaos complexity at 60 fJ intracavity energies. The correlation dimension D2 is determined at 1.67 for the chaotic attractor, along with maximal Lyapunov exponent rate about 2.94 the fundamental optomechanical oscillation for fast adjacent trajectory divergence. Nonlinear dynamical maps demonstrate the subharmonics, bifurcations, and stable regimes, along with distinct transitional routes into chaos. This provides a CMOS-compatible and scalable architecture for understanding complex dynamics on the mesoscopic scale.

We present an experimental study of spin-torque driven vortex self-oscillations in magnetic nanocontacts. We find that above a certain threshold in applied currents, the vortex gyration around the nanocontact is modulated by relaxation oscillations, which involve periodic reversals of the vortex core. This modulation leads to the appearance of commensurate but also more interestingly here, incommensurate states, which are characterized by devils staircases in the modulation frequency. We use frequency- and time-domain measurements together with advanced time-series analyses to provide experimental evidence of chaos in incommensurate states of vortex oscillations, in agreement with theoretical predictions.
The chaotic nature of a storage-ring Free Electron Laser (FEL) is investigated. The derivation of a low embedding dimension for the dynamics allows the low-dimensionality of this complex system to be observed, whereas its unpredictability is demonstr ated, in some ranges of parameters, by a positive Lyapounov exponent. The route to chaos is then explored by tuning a single control parameter, and a period-doubling cascade is evidenced, as well as intermittence.
Silicon on insulator photonics has offered a versatile platform for the recent development of integrated optomechanical circuits. However, there are some constraints such as the high cost of the wafers and limitation to a single physical device level . In the present work we investigate nanocrystalline silicon as an alternative material for optomechanical devices. In particular, we demonstrate that optomechanical crystal cavities fabricated of nanocrystalline silicon have optical and mechanical properties enabling non-linear dynamical behaviour and effects such as thermo-optic/free-carrier-dispersion self-pulsing, phonon lasing and chaos, all at low input laser power and with typical frequencies as high as 0.3 GHz.
Optical non-linearities, such as thermo-optic effects and free-carrier-dispersion, are often considered as undesired effects in silicon-based resonators and, more specifically, optomechanical (OM) cavities, affecting the relative detuning between an optical resonance and the excitation laser. However, the interplay between such mechanisms could also enable unexpected physical phenomena to be used in new applications. In the present work, we exploit those non-linearities and their intercoupling with the mechanical degrees of freedom of a silicon OM nanobeam to unveil a rich set of fundamentally different complex dynamics. By smoothly changing the parameters of the excitation laser, namely its power and wavelength, we demonstrate accurate control for activating bi-dimensional and tetra-dimensional limit-cycles, a period doubling route and chaos. In addition, by scanning the laser parameters in opposite senses we demonstrate bistability and hysteresis between bi-dimensional and tetra-dimensional limit-cycles, between different coherent mechanical states and between tetra-dimensional limit-cycles and chaos. As a result of implementing the Rosenstein algorithm to the experimental time series we have extracted a Largest Lyapunov Exponent of LLE=1.3x10^5 s-1, which is between one and two orders of magnitude lower than the typical oscillating frequencies of the system. Most of the experimental features can be well reproduced with a model of first-order non-linear differential equations coupled through the number of intracavity photons. Our findings open several routes towards exploiting silicon-based OM photonic crystals for systems with memory and, more specifically, for chaos based applications such as secure information transfer or sensing.
Coupled parametric oscillators were recently employed as simulators of artificial Ising networks, with the potential to solve computationally hard minimization problems. We demonstrate a new dynamical regime within the simplest network - two coupled parametric oscillators, where the oscillators never reach a steady state, but show persistent, full-scale, coherent beats, whose frequency reflects the coupling properties and strength. We present a detailed theoretical and experimental study and show that this new dynamical regime appears over a wide range of parameters near the oscillation threshold and depends on the nature of the coupling (dissipative or energy preserving). Thus, a system of coupled parametric oscillators transcends the Ising description and manifests unique coherent dynamics, which may have important implications for coherent computation machines.
