We present Keck/MOSFIRE observations of UV metal lines in four bright gravitationally-lensed z~6-8 galaxies behind the cluster Abell 1703. The spectrum of A1703-zd6, a highly-magnified star forming galaxy with a Lyman-alpha redshift of z=7.045, reveals a confident detection of the nebular CIV emission line (unresolved with FWHM < 125 km/s). UV metal lines are not detected in the three other galaxies. At z~2-3, nebular CIV emission is observed in just 1% of UV-selected galaxies. The presence of strong CIV emission in one of the small sample of galaxies targeted in this paper may indicate hard ionizing spectra are more common at z~7. The total estimated equivalent width of the CIV doublet (38 A) and CIV/Lyman-alpha flux ratio (0.3) are comparable to measurements of narrow-lined AGNs. Photoionization models show that the nebular CIV line can also be reproduced by a young stellar population, with very hot metal poor stars dominating the photon flux responsible for triply ionizing carbon. Regardless of the origin of the CIV, we show that the ionizing spectrum of A1703-zd6 is different from that of typical galaxies at z~2, producing more H ionizing photons per unit 1500A luminosity and a larger flux density at 30-50 eV. If such extreme radiation fields are typical in UV-selected systems at z>7, it would indicate that reionization-era galaxies are more efficient ionizing agents than previously thought. Alternatively, we suggest that the small sample of Lyman-alpha emitters at z>7 may trace a rare population with intense radiation fields capable of ionizing their surrounding hydrogen distribution. Additional constraints on high ionization emission lines in galaxies with and without Lyman-alpha detections will help clarify whether hard ionizing spectra are common in the reionization era.

We present Keck/MOSFIRE spectra of the diagnostic nebular emission lines [OIII]5007,4959, [OII]3727, and H-beta for a sample of 15 redshift z=3.1-3.7 Ly-alpha emitters (LAEs) and Lyman break galaxies (LBGs). In conjunction with spectra from other sur veys, we confirm earlier indications that LAEs have a much higher [OIII]/[OII] line ratio than is seen in similar redshift LBGs. By comparing their distributions on a [OIII]/[OII] versus R23 diagram, we demonstrate that this difference cannot arise solely because of their lower metallicities but most likely is due to a harder ionizing spectrum. Using measures of H-beta and recombination theory, we demonstrate, for a subset of our LAEs, that xi_ion - the number of Lyman continuum photons per UV luminosity - is indeed 0.2-0.5 dex larger than for typical LBGs at similar redshifts. Using photoionization models we estimate the effect this would have on both [OIII]/[OII] and R23 and conclude such a hard spectrum can only partially explain such intense line emission. The additional possibility is that such a large [OIII]/[OII] ratio is in part due to density rather than ionization bound nebular regions, which would imply a high escape fraction of ionizing photons. We discuss how further observations could confirm this possibility. Clearly LAEs with intense [OIII] emission represent a promising analog of those z>7 sources with similarly strong lines which are thought to be an important contributor to cosmic reionization.
Recent observations have revealed the presence of strong CIII] emission (EW$_{rm{CIII]}}>20$ r{A}) in $z>6$ galaxies, the origin of which remains unclear. In an effort to understand the nature of these line emitters, we have initiated a survey target ing CIII] emission in gravitationally-lensed reionization era analogs identified in HST imaging of clusters from the RELICS survey. Here we report initial results on four galaxies selected to have low stellar masses (2-8$times$10$^7$ M$_odot$) and J$_{125}$-band flux excesses indicative of intense [OIII]+H$beta$ emission (EW$_{rm{[OIII]+Hbeta}}$=500-2000 r{A}), similar to what has been observed at $z>6$. We detect CIII] emission in three of the four sources, with the CIII] EW reaching values seen in the reionization era (EW$_{rm{CIII]}}simeq 17-22$ r{A}) in the two sources with the strongest optical line emission (EW$_{rm{[OIII]+Hbeta}}simeq 2000$ r{A}). We have obtained a Magellan/FIRE near-infrared spectrum of the strongest CIII] emitter in our sample, revealing gas that is both metal poor and highly ionized. Using photoionization models, we are able to simultaneously reproduce the intense CIII] and optical line emission for extremely young (2-3 Myr) and metal poor (0.06-0.08 Z$_odot$) stellar populations, as would be expected after a substantial upturn in the SFR of a low mass galaxy. The sources in this survey are among the first for which CIII] has been used as the primary means of redshift confirmation. We suggest that it should be possible to extend this approach to $z>6$ with current facilities, using CIII] to measure redshifts of objects with IRAC excesses indicating EW$_{rm{[OIII]+Hbeta}}simeq 2000$ r{A}, providing a method of spectroscopic confirmation independent of Ly$alpha$.
In the last few years, prominent high-ionization nebular emission lines (i.e., OIII], CIII], CIV, HeII) have been observed in the deep UV spectra of z~5-7 galaxies, indicating that extreme radiation fields characterize reionization-era systems. These lines have been linked to the leakage of Lyman continuum photons both theoretically and observationally. Consequently, high-ionization UV emission lines present our best probe to detect and characterize the most distant galaxies that we will observe in the coming years, and are key to understanding the sources of reionization, yet the physics governing their production is poorly understood. Here we present recent high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope spectra of two nearby extreme UV emission-line galaxies, J104457 and J141851. We report the first observations of intense nebular HeII and double-peaked, resonantly-scattered CIV emission, a combination that suggests these galaxies both produce and transmit a significant number of very high-energy ionizing photons (E>47.89 eV) through relatively low column densities of high-ionization gas. This suggests that, in addition to photons at the H-ionizing edge, the very hard ionizing photons that escape from these galaxies may provide a secondary source of ionization that is currently unconstrained observationally. Simultaneous radiative transfer models of LyA and CIV are needed to understand how ionizing radiation is transmitted through both low- and high-ionization gas. Future rest-frame FUV observations of galaxies within the epoch of reionization using the JWST or ELTs will allow us to constrain the escape of helium-ionizing photons and provide an estimate for their contribution to the reionization budget.
Recent studies suggest that faint active galactic nuclei may be responsible for the reionization of the universe. Confirmation of this scenario requires spectroscopic identification of faint quasars ($M_{1450}>-24$ mag) at $z gtrsim6$, but only a ver y small number of such quasars have been spectroscopically identified so far. Here, we report the discovery of a faint quasar IMS J220417.92+011144.8 at z~6 in a 12.5 deg$^{2}$ region of the SA22 field of the Infrared Medium-deep Survey (IMS). The spectrum of the quasar shows a sharp break at $sim8443~rm{AA}$, with emission lines redshifted to $z=5.944 pm 0.002$ and rest-frame ultraviolet continuum magnitude $M_{1450}=-23.59pm0.10$ AB mag. The discovery of IMS J220417.92+011144.8 is consistent with the expected number of quasars at z~6 estimated from quasar luminosity functions based on previous observations of spectroscopically identified low-luminosity quasars . This suggests that the number of $M_{1450}sim-23$ mag quasars at z~6 may not be high enough to fully account for the reionization of the universe. In addition, our study demonstrates that faint quasars in the early universe can be identified effectively with a moderately wide and deep near-infrared survey such as the IMS.
We quantify the distribution of [OIII]+H$beta$ line strengths at z$simeq$7 using a sample of 20 bright (M$_{mathrm{UV}}$ $lesssim$ $-$21) galaxies. We select these systems over wide-area fields (2.3 deg$^2$ total) using a new colour-selection which p recisely selects galaxies at z$simeq$6.63$-$6.83, a redshift range where blue Spitzer/IRAC [3.6]$-$[4.5] colours unambiguously indicate strong [OIII]$+$H$beta$ emission. These 20 galaxies suggest a log-normal [OIII]$+$H$beta$ EW distribution with median EW = 759$^{+112}_{-113}$ $mathrm{mathring{A}}$ and standard deviation = 0.26$^{+0.06}_{-0.05}$ dex. We find no evidence for strong variation in this EW distribution with UV luminosity. The typical [OIII]+H$beta$ EW at z$simeq$7 implied by our sample is considerably larger than that in massive star forming galaxies at z$simeq$2, consistent with a shift toward larger average sSFR (4.4 Gyr$^{-1}$) and lower metallicities (0.16 Z$_odot$). We also find evidence for the emergence of a population with yet more extreme nebular emission ([OIII]+H$beta$ EW$>$1200 $mathrm{mathring{A}}$) that is rarely seen at lower redshifts. These objects have extremely large sSFR ($>$30 Gyr$^{-1}$), as would be expected for systems undergoing a burst or upturn in star formation. While this may be a short-lived phase, our results suggest that 20% of the z$simeq$7 population has such extreme nebular emission, implying that galaxies likely undergo intense star formation episodes regularly at z$>$6. We argue that this population may be among the most effective ionizing agents in the reionization era, both in terms of photon production efficiency and escape fraction. We furthermore suggest that galaxies passing through this large sSFR phase are likely to be very efficient in forming bound star clusters.
