An experiment using the 11B(3He,d)12C reaction was performed at iThemba LABS at an incident energy of 44 MeV and analyzed with a high energy-resolution magnetic spectrometer, to re-investigate states in 12C published in 1971. The original investigation reported the existence of an 11.16 MeV state in 12C that displays a 2+ nature. In the present experiment data were acquired at laboratory angles of 25-, 30- and 35- degrees, to be as close to the c.m. angles of the original measurements where the clearest signature of such a state was observed. These new low background measurements revealed no evidence of the previously reported state at 11.16 MeV in 12C.

The 16.1MeV 2+ resonance in 12C situated slightly above the proton threshold can decay by proton-, $alpha$-, and $gamma$ emission. The partial width for proton emission cannot be directly measured due to the low proton energy and the small branching ratio. Instead it must be indirectly derived from other observables. However, due to several inconsistent data the derived partial width varies by almost a factor 2 dependent on the data used. Here we trace the majority of this inconsistency to different measurements of the $(p,alpha)$ cross sections. We have remeasured this cross section using modern large area silicon strip detectors allowing to measure all final state particles, which circumvents a normalization issue affecting some of the previous measurements. Based on this we determine $Gamma_{p}$ = 21.0(13)eV. We discuss the implications for other observables related to the 16.1 MeV $2^{+}$ resonance and for isospin symmetry in the $A=12$ system. In addition, we conclude that the dataset currently used for the NACRE and NACRE II evaluation of the $^{11}mathrm{B}(p,3alpha)$ reaction should be scaled by a factor of 2/3. This impacts the reaction rate accordingly.
Dissipative 12C+12C reactions at 95 MeV are fully detected in charge with the GARFIELD and RCo apparatuses at LNL. A comparison to a dedicated Hauser-Feshbach calculation allows to select events which correspond, to a large extent, to the statistical evaporation of highly excited 24Mg, as well as to extract information on the isotopic distribution of the evaporation residues in coincidence with their complete evaporation chain. Residual deviations from a statistical behaviour are observed in alpha yields and attributed to the persistence of cluster correlations well above the 24Mg threshold for 6 alphas decay.

Inelastic $alpha$ scattering on 16O is studied at 400 MeV by using an ice target. Near the 4-alpha breakup threshold of 14.4 MeV, a broad peak is observed at an excitation energy of 13.6+/-0.2 MeV with a width of 0.6+/-0.2 MeV. The spin-parity is est imated to be 0+ from the momentum-transfer dependence. The observed width is significantly larger than those of the neighboring 0+ states indicating a state with a well-developed alpha cluster structure. The magnitude of the cross section is sensitive to the density distribution of the constituent alpha clusters. The observed cross section is consistent with the theoretical prediction for the alpha cluster condensed state characterized by its dilute density distribution with a large root-mean-square radius of about 4.3 fm.
We report a measurement of a new high spin Jp = 5- state at 22.4(0.2) MeV in 12C which fits very well to the predicted (ground state) rotational band of an oblate equilateral triangular spinning top with a D_3h symmetry characterized by the sequence 0+, 2+, 3-, 4+/-, 5- with almost degenerate 4+ and 4- (parity doublet) states. Such a D_3h symmetry was observed in triatomic molecules and it is observed here for the first time in nuclear physics. We discuss a classification of other rotation-vibration bands in 12C such as the (0+) Hoyle band and the (1-) bending mode band and suggest measurements in search of the predicted (missing) states that may shed new light on clustering in 12C and light nuclei. In particular the observation (or non-observation) of the predicted (missing) states in the Hoyle band will allow us to conclude the geometrical arrangement of the three alpha-particle composing the Hoyle state at 7.654 MeV in 12C.
The population of the 9.50 MeV 9/2+ resonance in 13C by single neutron transfer reactions is expected to be dominated by the two-step route through the 12C 2+ (4.44 MeV) state, with another possible contribution via the strongly excited 3- (9.64 MeV) resonance in 12C. However, we find that a good description of the angular distribution for population of this state via the 12C(d,p)13C reaction is only possible when both direct 0+ x g_9/2 and two-step (via the 4.44 MeV 12C 2+ state) 2+ x d_5/2 paths are included in a coupled reaction channel calculation. While the calculated angular distribution is almost insensitive to the presence of the two-step path via the 9.64 MeV 12C 3- resonance, despite a much greater contribution to the wave function from the 3- x f_7/2 configuration, its inclusion is required to fit the details of the experimental angular distribution. The very large interference between the various components of the calculations, even when these are small, arises through the ``kinematic effect associated with the different transfer routes.
