The use of specific symmetry properties of the optical second-harmonic generation (the s,s-exclusion rule) has allowed us to observe high-contrast hyper-Rayleigh interference patterns in a completely diffuse light - an effect having no analog in case of linear (Rayleigh) scattering.

We investigate the wave-optical light scattering properties of deformed thin circular films of constant thickness using the discrete-dipole approximation. Effects on the intensity distribution of the scattered light due to different statistical rough ness models, model dependant roughness parameters, and uncorrelated random small-scale porosity of the inhomogeneous medium are studied. The usability of discrete-dipole approximation to rough-surface scattering problems is evaluated by considering thin films as computationally feasible rough-surface analogs. The effects due to small-scale inhomogeneity of the scattering medium are compared with the analytic approximation by Maxwell Garnett and the results are found to agree with the approximation.
The Dipole-Quadrupole theory of Surface Enhanced Hyper Raman Scattering (SEHRS), created by the authors is expounded in details. Peculiarities of the behavior of electromagnetic field on rough metal surfaces are considered. It is demonstrated that th ere is an enhancement of the dipole and quadrupole light-molecule interaction near the places with a large curvature. The expression for the SEHRS cross-section of symmetrical molecules, which consists of several contributions is obtained. Selection rules for the scattering contributions are obtained and a qualitative classification of the contributions after an enhancement degree is performed. Analysis of experimental spectra of pyrazine and phenazine, and also some another molecules is performed too. It is demonstrated a full coincidence of experimental regularities in these spectra with the theory suggested.

The effects resulting from the introduction of a controlled perturbation in a single pattern membrane on its absorption are first studied and then analyzed on the basis of band folding considerations. The interest of this approach for photovoltaic ap plications is finally demonstrated by overcoming the integrated absorption of an optimized single pattern membrane through the introduction of a proper pseudo disordered perturbation.
The elastic Rayleigh scattering of twisted light and, in particular, the polarization (transfer) of the scattered photons have been analyzed within the framework of second-order perturbation theory and Diracs relativistic equation. Special attention was paid hereby to the scattering on three different atomic targets: single atoms, a mesoscopic (small) target, and a macroscopic (large) target, which are all centered with regard to the beam axis. Detailed calculations of the polarization Stokes parameters were performed for C^{5+} ions and for twisted Bessel beams. It is shown that the polarization of scattered photons is sensitive to the size of an atomic target and to the helicity, the opening angle, and the projection of the total angular momentum of the incident Bessel beam. These computations indicate more that the Stokes parameters of the (Rayleigh) scattered twisted light may significantly differ from their behaviour for an incident plane-wave radiation.
High refractive index contrast optical microdisk resonators fabricated from silicon-on-insulator wafers are studied using an external silica fiber taper waveguide as a wafer-scale optical probe. Measurements performed in the 1500 nm wavelength band s how that these silicon microdisks can support whispering-gallery modes with quality factors as high as 5.2 x 10^5, limited by Rayleigh scattering from fabrication induced surface roughness. Microdisks with radii as small as 2.5 microns are studied, with measured quality factors as high as 4.7 x 10^5 for an optical mode volume of 5.3 cubic wavelengths in the material.
