This paper presents a scalable path- and context-sensitive data-dependence analysis. The key is to address the aliasing-path-explosion problem via a sparse, demand-driven, and fused approach that piggybacks the computation of pointer information with the resolution of data dependence. Specifically, our approach decomposes the computational efforts of disjunctive reasoning into 1) a context- and semi-path-sensitive analysis that concisely summarizes data dependence as the symbolic and storeless value-flow graphs, and 2) a demand-driven phase that resolves transitive data dependence over the graphs. We have applied the approach to two clients, namely thin slicing and value flow analysis. Using a suite of 16 programs ranging from 13 KLoC to 8 MLoC, we compare our techniques against a diverse group of state-of-the-art analyses, illustrating significant precision and scalability advantages of our approach.

Context-sensitive global analysis of large code bases can be expensive, which can make its use impractical during software development. However, there are many situations in which modifications are small and isolated within a few components, and it i s desirable to reuse as much as possible previous analysis results. This has been achieved to date through incremental global analysis fixpoint algorithms that achieve cost reductions at fine levels of granularity, such as changes in program lines. However, these fine-grained techniques are not directly applicable to modular programs, nor are they designed to take advantage of modular structures. This paper describes, implements, and evaluates an algorithm that performs efficient context-sensitive analysis incrementally on modular partitions of programs. The experimental results show that the proposed modular algorithm shows significant improvements, in both time and memory consumption, when compared to existing non-modular, fine-grain incremental analysis techniques. Furthermore, thanks to the proposed inter-modular propagation of analysis information, our algorithm also outperforms traditional modular analysis even when analyzing from scratch.
Analyzing array-based computations to determine data dependences is useful for many applications including automatic parallelization, race detection, computation and communication overlap, verification, and shape analysis. For sparse matrix codes, ar ray data dependence analysis is made more difficult by the use of index arrays that make it possible to store only the nonzero entries of the matrix (e.g., in A[B[i]], B is an index array). Here, dependence analysis is often stymied by such indirect array accesses due to the values of the index array not being available at compile time. Consequently, many dependences cannot be proven unsatisfiable or determined until runtime. Nonetheless, index arrays in sparse matrix codes often have properties such as monotonicity of index array elements that can be exploited to reduce the amount of runtime analysis needed. In this paper, we contribute a formulation of array data dependence analysis that includes encoding index array properties as universally quantified constraints. This makes it possible to leverage existing SMT solvers to determine whether such dependences are unsatisfiable and significantly reduces the number of dependences that require runtime analysis in a set of eight sparse matrix kernels. Another contribution is an algorithm for simplifying the remaining satisfiable data dependences by discovering equalities and/or subset relationships. These simplifications are essential to make a runtime-inspection-based approach feasible.
Current tabling systems suffer from an increase in space complexity, time complexity or both when dealing with sequences due to the use of data structures for tabled subgoals and answers and the need to copy terms into and from the table area. This s ymptom can be seen in not only B-Prolog, which uses hash tables, but also systems that use tries such as XSB and YAP. In this paper, we apply hash-consing to tabling structured data in B-Prolog. While hash-consing can reduce the space consumption when sharing is effective, it does not change the time complexity. We enhance hash-consing with two techniques, called input sharing and hash code memoization, for reducing the time complexity by avoiding computing hash codes for certain terms. The improved system is able to eliminate the extra linear factor in the old system for processing sequences, thus significantly enhancing the scalability of applications such as language parsing and bio-sequence analysis applications. We confirm this improvement with experimental results.

Using the growing volumes of vehicle trajectory data, it becomes increasingly possible to capture time-varying and uncertain travel costs in a road network, including travel time and fuel consumption. The current paradigm represents a road network as a graph, assigns weights to the graphs edges by fragmenting trajectories into small pieces that fit the underlying edges, and then applies a routing algorithm to the resulting graph. We propose a new paradigm that targets more accurate and more efficient estimation of the costs of paths by associating weights with sub-paths in the road network. The paper provides a solution to a foundational problem in this paradigm, namely that of computing the time-varying cost distribution of a path. The solution consists of several steps. We first learn a set of random variables that capture the joint distributions of sub-paths that are covered by sufficient trajectories. Then, given a departure time and a path, we select an optimal subset of learned random variables such that the random variables corresponding paths together cover the path. This enables accurate joint distribution estimation of the path, and by transferring the joint distribution into a marginal distribution, the travel cost distribution of the path is obtained. The use of multiple learned random variables contends with data sparseness, the use of multi-dimensional histograms enables compact representation of arbitrary joint distributions that fully capture the travel cost dependencies among the edges in paths. Empirical studies with substantial trajectory data from two different cities offer insight into the design properties of the proposed solution and suggest that the solution is effective in real-world settings.
Verification of concurrent data structures is one of the most challenging tasks in software verification. The topic has received considerable attention over the course of the last decade. Nevertheless, human-driven techniques remain cumbersome and no toriously difficult while automated approaches suffer from limited applicability. The main obstacle for automation is the complexity of concurrent data structures. This is particularly true in the absence of garbage collection. The intricacy of lock-free memory management paired with the complexity of concurrent data structures makes automated verification prohibitive. In this work we present a method for verifying concurrent data structures and their memory management separately. We suggest two simpler verification tasks that imply the correctness of the data structure. The first task establishes an over-approximation of the reclamation behavior of the memory management. The second task exploits this over-approximation to verify the data structure without the need to consider the implementation of the memory management itself. To make the resulting verification tasks tractable for automated techniques, we establish a second result. We show that a verification tool needs to consider only executions where a single memory location is reused. We implemented our approach and were able to verify linearizability of Michael&Scotts queue and the DGLM queue for both hazard pointers and epoch-based reclamation. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to verify such implementations fully automatically.
