Entropy is a fundamental thermodynamic quantity that is a measure of the accessible microstates available to a system, with the stability of a system determined by the magnitude of the total entropy of the system. This is valid across truly mind boggling length scales - from nanoparticles to galaxies. However, quantitative measurements of entropy change using calorimetry are predominantly macroscopic, with direct atomic scale measurements being exceedingly rare. Here for the first time, we experimentally quantify the polar configurational entropy (in meV/K) using sub-r{a}ngstr{o}m resolution aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. This is performed in a single crystal of the prototypical ferroelectric $mathsf{LiNbO_3}$ through the quantification of the niobium and oxygen atom column deviations from their paraelectric positions. Significant excursions of the niobium - oxygen polar displacement away from its symmetry constrained direction is seen in single domain regions which increases in the proximity of domain walls. Combined with first principles theory plus mean field effective Hamiltonian methods, we demonstrate the variability in the polar order parameter, which is stabilized by an increase in the magnitude of the configurational entropy. This study presents a powerful tool to quantify entropy from atomic displacements and demonstrates its dominant role in local symmetry breaking at finite temperatures in classic, nominally Ising ferroelectrics.

The interfacial screening charge that arises to compensate electric fields of dielectric or ferroelectric thin films is now recognized as the most important factor in determining the capacitance or polarization of ultrathin ferroelectrics. Here we in vestigate using aberration-corrected electron microscopy and density functional theory how interfaces cope with the need to terminate ferroelectric polarization. In one case, we show evidence for ionic screening, which has been predicted by theory but never observed. For a ferroelectric film on an insulating substrate, we found that compensation can be mediated by interfacial charge generated, for example, by oxygen vacancies.

The structure of nanoclusters is complex to describe due to their noncrystallinity, even though bonding and packing constraints limit the local atomic arrangements to only a few types. A computational scheme is presented to extract coordination motif s from sample atomic configurations. The method is based on a clustering analysis of multipole moments for atoms in the first coodination shell. Its power to capture large-scale structural properties is demonstrated by scanning through the ground state of the Lennard-Jones and C$_{60}$ clusters collected at the Cambridge Cluster Database.
The ability to controllably manipulate the complex topological polar configurations, such as polar flux-closure via external stimuli, enables many applications in electromechanical devices and nanoelectronics including high-density information storag e. Here, by using the atomically resolved in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy, we find that a polar flux-closure structure in PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices films can be reversibly switched to ordinary mono ferroelectric c domain or a domain under electric field or stress. Specifically, the electric field initially drives the flux-closure move and breaks them to form intermediate a/c striped domains, while the mechanical stress firstly starts to squeeze the flux-closures to convert into small vortices at the interface and form a continues dipole wave. After the removal of the external stimuli, the flux-closure structure spontaneously returns. Our atomic study provides valuable insights into understanding the lattice-charge interactions and the competing interactions balance in these complex topological structures. Such reversible switching between the flux-closure and ordinary ferroelectric domains also provides the foundation for applications such as memories and sensors.
A Potts model and the Replica Exchange Wang-Landau algorithm are used to construct an energy landscape for a crystalline solid containing surfaces and grain boundaries. The energy landscape is applied to an equation of motion from the steepest-entrop y-ascent quantum thermodynamic (SEAQT) framework to explore the kinetics of three distinct kinds of microstructural evolution: polycrystalline sintering, precipitate coarsening, and grain growth. The steepest entropy ascent postulate predicts unique kinetic paths for these non-equilibrium processes without needing any detailed information about the underlying physical mechanisms of the processes. A method is also proposed for associating the kinetic path in state space to a set of smoothly evolving microstructural descriptors. The SEAQT-predicted kinetics agree well with available experimental kinetics for ZrO2 sintering, Al3Li precipitate coarsening, and grain growth in nanocrystalline Pd. The computational cost associated with calculating the energy landscape needed by the approach is comparable to a Monte Carlo simulation. However, the subsequent kinetic calculations from the SEAQT equation of motion are quite modest and save considerable computational resources by obviating the need for averaging multiple kinetic Monte Carlo runs.
We analyze the nature of the structural order established in liquid TIP4P water in the framework provided by the multi-particle correlation expansion of the statistical entropy. Different regimes are mapped onto the phase diagram of the model upon re solving the pair entropy into its translational and orientational components. These parameters are used to quantify the relative amounts of positional and angular order in a given thermodynamic state, thus allowing a structurally unbiased definition of low-density and high-density water. As a result, the structurally anomalous region within which both types of order are simultaneously disrupted by an increase of pressure at constant temperature is clearly identified through extensive molecular-dynamics simulations.
