A phenomenological thermodynamic potential was constructed based on the symmetry analysis and property characterization of bulk DyCo2. An eight-order polynomial of Landau expansion was employed to describe the thermodynamic behavior of DyCo2. Several properties were reproduced including ferromagnetic transition temperature, magnetization curve, temperature dependence of magnetization. The transition behavior was analyzed via the thermodynamic potential. The Landau phenomenological thermodynamic model predicts the correct metamagnetic transition near the Curie temperature.

Owing to the experimental discovery of magnetic skyrmions stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and/or dipolar interactions in thin films, there is a recent upsurge of interest in magnetic skyrmions with antiferromagnetic spins in order to overcome the fundamental limitations inherent with skyrmions in ferromagnetic materials. Here, we report on the observation of compact ferrimagnetic skyrmions for the class of amorphous alloys consisting of 4f rare-earth and 3d transition-metal elements with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, using a DyCo$_3$ film, that are identified by combining x-ray magnetic scattering, scanning transmission x-ray microscopy, and Hall transport technique. These skyrmions, with antiparallel aligned Dy and Co magnetic moments and a characteristic core radius of about 40~nm, are formed during the nucleation and annihilation of the magnetic maze-like domain pattern exhibiting a topological Hall effect contribution. Our findings provide a promising route for fundamental research in the field of ferrimagnetic/antiferromagnetic spintronics towards practical applications.
Dislocation motion in body centered cubic (bcc) metals displays a number of specific features that result in a strong temperature dependence of the flow stress, and in shear deformation asymmetries relative to the loading direction as well as crystal orientation. Here we develop a generalized dislocation mobility law in bcc metals, and demonstrate its use in discrete Dislocation Dynamics (DD) simulations of plastic flow in tungsten (W) micro pillars. We present the theoretical background for dislocation mobility as a motivating basis for the developed law. Analytical theory, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and experimental data are used to construct a general phenomenological description. The usefulness of the mobility law is demonstrated through its application to modeling the plastic deformation of W micro pillars. The model is consistent with experimental observations of temperature and orientation dependence of the flow stress and the corresponding dislocation microstructure.
We use ultrafast x-ray and electron diffraction to disentangle spin-lattice coupling of granular FePt in the time domain. The reduced dimensionality of single-crystalline FePt nanoparticles leads to strong coupling of magnetic order and a highly anis otropic three-dimensional lattice motion characterized by a- and b-axis expansion and c-axis contraction. The resulting increase of the FePt lattice tetragonality, the key quantity determining the energy barrier between opposite FePt magnetization orientations, persists for tens of picoseconds. These results suggest a novel approach to laser-assisted magnetic switching in future data storage applications.

EuC$_2$ is a ferromagnet with a Curie-temperature of $T_C simeq 15,$K. It is semiconducting with the particularity that the resistivity drops by about 5 orders of magnitude on cooling through $T_C$, which is therefore called a metal-insulator transit ion. In this paper we study the magnetization, specific heat, thermal expansion, and the resistivity around this ferromagnetic transition on high-quality EuC$_2$ samples. At $T_C$ we observe well defined anomalies in the specific heat $c_p(T)$ and thermal expansion $alpha(T)$ data. The magnetic contributions of $c_p(T)$ and $alpha(T)$ can satisfactorily be described within a mean-field theory, taking into account the magnetization data. In zero magnetic field the magnetic contributions of the specific heat and thermal expansion fulfill a Gruneisen-scaling, which is not preserved in finite fields. From an estimation of the pressure dependence of $T_C$ via Ehrenfests relation, we expect a considerable increase of $T_C$ under applied pressure due to a strong spin-lattice coupling. Furthermore the influence of weak off stoichiometries $delta$ in EuC$_{2 pm delta}$ was studied. It is found that $delta$ strongly affects the resistivity, but hardly changes the transition temperature. In all these aspects, the behavior of EuC$_2$ strongly resembles that of EuO.

Density distribution of cold exciton clouds generated into a strain-induced potential well by two-photon excitation in Cu$_2$O is studied at 2 K. We find that an anomalous spike, which can be interpreted as accumulation of the excitons into the groun d state, emerges at the potential minimum. The accumulation can be due to stimulated scattering of cold excitons, mediated by acoustic phonon emission. Possibility of the formation of the thermodynamic Bose-Einstein condensate of paraexcitons has been discussed.
