The mass and width of the lowest lying S-wave spin singlet charmonium state, the eta_c, are measured using a data sample of 1.06x10^8 psi decays collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. We use a model that incorporates interference between the signal reaction, psi -> gamma eta_c, and a non-resonant radiative background to successfully describe the line shape of the eta_c. We measure the eta_c mass to be 2984.3 +- 0.6 +- 0.6 MeV/c^2 and the total width to be 32.0 +- 1.2 +- 1.0 MeV, where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic.

We present a study of the inclusive photon spectra from 5.9 million J/psi decays collected with the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M e+e- collider. We measure the branching fraction of radiative decay J/psi to eta_c gamma, eta_c width and mass. Our preli minary results are: M(eta_c) = 2979.4+-1.5+-1.9 MeV, G(eta_c) = 27.8+-5.1+-3.3 MeV, B(J/psi to eta_c gamma) = (2.34+-0.15+-0.40)%.
We present a study of the inclusive photon spectrum from 6.3 million J/psi decays collected with the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M e+e- collider. We measure the branching fraction of the radiative decay J/psi -> eta_c gamma, eta_c width and mass. Taki ng into account an asymmetric photon line shape we obtain: M(eta_c) = (2978.1 +- 1.4 +- 2.0) MeV/c^2, Gamma(eta_c) = (43.5 +- 5.4 +- 15.8) MeV, B(J/psi->eta_c gamma) = (2.59 +- 0.16 +- 0.31)%$.

We report on the observation of the eta_c^ (2 ^1S_0), the radial excitation of eta_c (1 ^1S_0) ground state of charmonium, in the two-photon fusion reaction gamma gamma to eta_c^ to K_S^0 K^{pm} pi^{mp} in 13.4 fb^{-1} of CLEO II/II.V data and 9.2 fb ^{-1} of CLEO III data. The data have been analyzed to extract the eta_c^ resonance parameters.
With the help of the largest data samples of $J/psi$ and $psi(2S)$ events ever produced in $e^+e^-$ annihilations, the three singlet charmonium states, $eta_c(1S)$, $eta_c(2S)$ and $h_c(1P)$, have been extensively studied at the BESIII experiment. In this review, a survey on the most recent results, including a series of precision measurements and observations of their new decay modes, is presented, which indicates the further investigations on their decays are needed to understand their decay mechanisms and have precision tests of the theoretical models. At present, about eight times larger data samples of 10 billion $J/psi$ events and 3 billion $psi(3686)$ events were collected with the BESIII detector, and thus the prospects for the study of these three charmonium states is discussed extensively.
The process $psi(3686) to pi^0 h_c, h_c to gamma eta_c$ has been studied with a data sample of $106 pm 4$ million $psi(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The mass and width of the $P$-wave charmonium spin-sin glet state $h_c(^1P_1)$ are determined by simultaneously fitting distributions of the $pi^0$ recoil mass for 16 exclusive $eta_c$ decay modes. The results, $M(hc) = 3525.31 pm 0.11 {rm (stat.)} pm 0.14 {rm (syst.)}$,MeV/$c^2$ and $Gamma(hc) = 0.70 pm 0.28 pm 0.22$,MeV, are consistent with and more precise than previous measurements. We also determine the branching ratios for the 16 exclusive $eta_c$ decay modes, five of which have not been measured previously. New measurements of the $eta_c$ line-shape parameters in the $E1$ transition $h_ctogammaeta_c$ are made by selecting candidates in the $h_c$ signal sample and simultaneously fitting the hadronic mass spectra for the 16 $eta_c$ decay channels. The resulting $eta_c$ mass and width values are $M(eta_c) = 2984.49 pm 1.16 pm 0.52$,MeV/$c^2$ and $Gamma(eta_c) = 36.4 pm 3.2 pm 1.7$,MeV.
