We consider the quark and antiquark transversity distributions inside a polarized proton and we study how they are expected to be related to the corresponding helicity distributions, both in sign and magnitude. Our considerations lead to simple predictions in good agreement with their first determination for light quarks from experimental data. We also give our predictions for the light antiquarks transversity distributions, so far unknown.

We consider the azimuthal correlations of charged hadron pairs with large total transverse momentum and small relative momentum, produced in proton-proton collisions with one transversely polarized proton. One of these correlations directly probes th e chiral-odd transversity parton distribution in connection with a chiral-odd interference fragmentation function. We present predictions for this observable based on previous extractions of transversity (from charged pion pair production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering) and of the interference fragmentation function (from the production of back-to-back charged pion pairs in electron-positron annihilations). All analyses are performed in the framework of collinear factorization. We compare our predictions to the recent data on proton-proton collisions released by the STAR collaboration at RHIC, and we find them reasonably compatible. This comparison confirms for the first time the predicted role of transversity in proton-proton collisions and it allows to test its universality.
The reliability of density-functional calculations hinges on accurately approximating the unknown exchange-correlation (xc) potential. Common (semi-)local xc approximations lack the jump experienced by the exact xc potential as the number of electron s infinitesimally surpasses an integer, and the spatial steps that form in the potential as a result of the change in the decay rate of the density. These features are important for an accurate prediction of the fundamental gap and the distribution of charge in complex systems. Although well-known concepts, the exact relationship between them remained unclear. In this Letter, we establish the common fundamental origin of these two features of the exact xc potential via an analytical derivation. We support our result with an exact numerical solution of the many-electron Schroedinger equation for a single atom and a diatomic molecule in one dimension. Furthermore, we propose a way to extract the fundamental gap from the step structures in the potential.
We present the first extraction of the transversity distribution in the framework of collinear factorization based on the global analysis of pion-pair production in deep-inelastic scattering off transversely polarized targets and in proton-proton col lisions with one transversely polarized proton. The extraction relies on the knowledge of di-hadron fragmentation functions, which are taken from the analysis of electron-positron annihilation data. For the first time, the chiral-odd transversity is extracted from a global analysis similar to what is usually done for the chiral-even spin-averaged and helicity distributions. The knowledge of transversity is important for, among other things, detecting possible signals of new physics in high-precision low-energy experiments.
We present the first calculation of the $x$-dependence of the isovector transversity generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for the proton within lattice QCD. We compute the matrix elements with non-local operators containing a Wilson line. The calc ulation implements the Breit symmetric frame. The proton momenta are chosen as $0.83,,1.25,,1.67$ GeV, and the values of the momentum transfer squared are $0.69,,1.02$ GeV$^2$. These combinations include cases with zero and nonzero skewness. The calculation is performed using one ensemble of two degenerate-mass light, a strange and a charm quark of maximally twisted mass fermions with a clover term. The lattice results are renormalized non-perturbatively and finally matched to the light-cone GPDs using one-loop perturbation theory within the framework of large momentum effective theory. The final GPDs are given in the $overline{rm MS}$ scheme at a scale of 2 GeV. In addition to the individual GPDs, we form the combination of the transversity GPDs that is related to the transverse spin structure of the proton. Finally, we extract the lowest two moments of GPDs and draw a number of important qualitative conclusions.
The explicit procedures are described for reconstruction of the full set of helicity amplitudes in proton-proton and proton-antiproton elastic scattering. The procedures are based on the derivative relations for the helicity amplitudes in s-channel, on the explicit parametrization of the leading spin non flip amplitudes and crossing - symmetry relations. Asymptotic theorems are used for definition of free parameters in derivative relations. We also study the Odderon influence on the helicity amplitude reconstruction. Reconstruction procedures are valid at extremely wide energy domain and broad range of momentum transfer. These procedures might be useful in studying the spin phenomena in proton-proton and proton-antiproton elastic scattering.
