In this paper we will show that the assumption on the negative Schwarzian derivative is redundant in the case of C^3 unimodal maps with a nonflat critical point. The following theorem will be proved: For any C^3 unimodal map of an interval with a nonflat critical point there exists an interval around the critical value such that the first entry map to this interval has negative Schwarzian derivative. Another theorem proved in the paper provides useful cross-ratio estimates. Thus, all theorems proved only for unimodal maps with negative Schwarzian derivative can be easily generalized.

In this paper we shall use the boundary Schwarz lemma of Osserman to obtain some generalizations and refinements of some well known results concerning the maximum modulus of the polynomials with restricted zeros due to Turan, Dubinin and others.

A negative-phase-velocity condition derived by Depine and Lakhtakia [Microwave Opt Technol Lett 41 (2004) 315] for isotropic, homogeneous, passive, dielectric-magnetic materials is inapplicable as a negative-refraction condition for active materials.

In this paper, we present a correct proof of an $L_p$-inequality concerning the polar derivative of a polynomial with restricted zeros. We also extend Zygmunds inequality to the polar derivative of a polynomial.
A finite Blaschke product, restricted to the unit circle, is a smooth covering map. The maximum and minimum values of the derivative of this map reflect the geometry of the Blaschke product. We identify two classes of extremal Blaschke products: thos e that maximize the difference between the maximum and minimum of the derivative, and those that minimize it. Both classes turn out to have the same algebraic structure, being the quotient of two hypergeometric polynomials.
