We report on infrared studies of the c-axis electrodynamics of Tl-Ba-Cu-O (Tl-2201) crystals. A sum rule analysis reveals spectral weight shifts that can be interpreted as a kinetic energy change at the superconducting transistion. In optimally doped crystals, showing an incoherent normal state response, the kinetic energy is lowered at T < Tc, but no significant change is found in the over-doped samples, which have more coherent conductivity at T > Tc.

The results of EXAFS measurements at 300 K for the superconducting compounds Tl$_{0.75}$Cu$_{0.25}$Ba$_{2}$Ca$_{3}$Cu$_4$O$_{y}$ [Tl-1234], TlBa$_{2}$Ca$_{3}$Cu$_{4}$O$_{y}$ [Tl-1212], and CuBa$_{2}$Ca$_{3}$Cu$_{4}$O$_{y}$ [Cu-1234]. are reported. We have measured the EXAFS spectrum for Tl$_{0.75}$Cu$_{0.25}$Ba$_{2}$Ca$_{3}$Cu$_4$O$_{y}$ in the range 10K-300K, however here we limit our discussion to the spectrum at 300 K. This material is prepared under high pressure [3.5 GPa] from precursors with small carbon concentrations and exhibits a T$_c$ of $~127$ K. We have also performed ``aging study by looking at XRD for this material after approximately one year. The XRD results at 300 K are ``unchanged. It is of interest to compare the EXAFS spectrum of this compound with the corresponding compound Cu-1234. Remarks on the choice of appropriate EXAFS standard for this and related compounds are also given. Based on our data analysis we quantify disorder in these systems. By using the Cu-O in-plane distance we give values for the microstrain parameter, which can be related to the charge ordering transition.
The Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham (FGT) sum rule has been applied to the temperature dependence of the in-plane optical conductivity of optimally-doped YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.95} and underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.60}. Within the accuracy of the experiment, the sum rule i s obeyed in both materials. However, the energy scale omega_c required to recover the full strength of the superfluid rho_s in the two materials is dramatically different; omega_c simeq 800 cm^{-1} in the optimally doped system (close to twice the maximum of the superconducting gap, 2Delta_0), but omega_c gtrsim 5000 cm^{-1} in the underdoped system. In both materials, the normal-state scattering rate close to the critical temperature is small, Gamma < 2Delta_0, so that the materials are not in the dirty limit and the relevant energy scale for rho_s in a BCS material should be twice the energy gap. The FGT sum rule in the optimally-doped material suggests that the majority of the spectral weight of the condensate comes from energies below 2Delta_0, which is consistent with a BCS material in which the condensate originates from a Fermi liquid normal state. In the underdoped material the larger energy scale may be a result of the non-Fermi liquid nature of the normal state. The dramatically different energy scales suggest that the nature of the normal state creates specific conditions for observing the different aspects of what is presumably a central mechanism for superconductivity in these materials.
Angle-dependent magnetoresistance measurements are used to determine the isotropic and anisotropic components of the transport scattering rate in overdoped Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+delta}$ for a range of $T_c$ values between 15K and 35K. The size of the a nisotropic scattering term is found to scale linearly with $T_c$, establishing a link between the superconducting and normal state physics. Comparison with results from angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy indicates that the transport and quasiparticle lifetimes are distinct.

The superconductor-to-insulator transition (SIT) induced by means such as external magnetic fields, disorder or spatial confinement is a vivid illustration of a quantum phase transition dramatically affecting the superconducting order parameter. In p ursuit of a new realization of the SIT by interfacial charge transfer, we developed extremely thin superlattices composed of high $T_c$ superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) and colossal magnetoresistance ferromagnet La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO). By using linearly polarized resonant X-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism, combined with hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we derived a complete picture of the interfacial carrier doping in cuprate and manganite atomic layers, leading to the transition from superconducting to an unusual Mott insulating state emerging with the increase of LCMO layer thickness. In addition, contrary to the common perception that only transition metal ions may response to the charge transfer process, we found that charge is also actively compensated by rare-earth and alkaline-earth metal ions of the interface. Such deterministic control of $T_c$ by pure electronic doping without any hindering effects of chemical substitution is another promising route to disentangle the role of disorder on the pseudo-gap and charge density wave phases of underdoped cuprates.
Nematicity has emerged as a key feature of cuprate superconductors, but its link to other fundamental properties such as superconductivity, charge order and the pseudogap remains unclear. Here we use measurements of transport anisotropy in YBa$_2$Cu$ _3$O$_y$ to distinguish two types of nematicity. The first is associated with short-range charge-density-wave modulations in a doping region near $p = 0.12$. It is detected in the Nernst coefficient, but not in the resistivity. The second type prevails at lower doping, where there are spin modulations but no charge modulations. In this case, the onset of in-plane anisotropy - detected in both the Nernst coefficient and the resistivity - follows a line in the temperature-doping phase diagram that tracks the pseudogap energy. We discuss two possible scenarios for the latter nematicity.
