We report on the realization of a quantum degenerate atomic Fermi gas in an optical lattice. Fermi surfaces of noninteracting fermions are studied in a three-dimensional lattice. Using a Feshbach resonance, we observe a coupling of the Bloch bands in the strongly interacting regime.

We observe a localized phase of ultracold bosonic quantum gases in a 3-dimensional optical lattice induced by a small contribution of fermionic atoms acting as impurities in a Fermi-Bose quantum gas mixture. In particular we study the dependence of t his transition on the fermionic 40K impurity concentration by a comparison to the corresponding superfluid to Mott insulator transition in a pure bosonic 87Rb gas and find a significant shift in the transition parameter. The observed shift is larger than expected based on a mean-field argument, which is a strong indication that disorder-related effects play a significant role.

We carry out textit{ab initio} study of ground state phase diagram of spin-1/2 cold fermionic atoms within two-fold degenerate $p$-band of an anisotropic optical lattice. Using the Gutzwiller variational approach, we show that a robust ferromagnetic phase exists for a vast range of band fillings and interacting strengths. The ground state crosses over from spin density wave state to spin-1 Neel state at half filling. Additional harmonic trap will induce spatial separation of varies phases. We also discuss several relevant observable consequences and detection methods. Experimental test of the results reported here may shed some light on the long-standing issue of itinerant ferromagnetism.
We propose to realize one-dimensional topological phases protected by SU($N$) symmetry using alkali or alkaline-earth atoms loaded into a bichromatic optical lattice. We derive a realistic model for this system and investigate it theoretically. Depen ding on the parity of $N$, two different classes of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are stabilized at half-filling for physical parameters of the model. For even $N$, the celebrated spin-1 Haldane phase and its generalization to SU($N$) are obtained with no local symmetry breaking. In stark contrast, at least for $N=3$, a new class of SPT phases, dubbed chiral Haldane phases, that spontaneously break inversion symmetry, emerge with a two-fold ground-state degeneracy. The latter ground states with open-boundary conditions are characterized by different left and right boundary spins which are related by conjugation. Our results show that topological phases are within close reach of the latest experiments on cold fermions in optical lattices.
We propose a protocol for generating generalized GHZ states using ultracold fermions in 3D optical lattices or optical tweezer arrays. The protocol uses the interplay between laser driving, onsite interactions and external trapping confinement to enf orce energetic spin- and position-dependent constraints on the atomic motion. These constraints allow us to transform a local superposition into a GHZ state through a stepwise protocol that flips one site at a time. The protocol requires no site-resolved drives or spin-dependent potentials, exhibits robustness to slow global laser phase drift, and naturally makes use of the harmonic trap that would normally cause difficulties for entanglement-generating protocols in optical lattices. We also discuss an improved protocol that can compensate for holes in the loadout at the cost of increased generation time. The state can immediately be used for quantum-enhanced metrology in 3D optical lattice clocks, opening a window to push the sensitivity of state-of-the-art sensors beyond the standard quantum limit.
We suggest that box shape trap enables to observe intrinsic properties of the repulsive Hubbard model in a fixed doping in contrast to the harmonic trap bringing about spatial variations of atom density profiles. In order to predict atomic density pr ofile under the box trap, we apply the directly-extended density-matrix renormalization group method to 4-leg repulsive Hubbard model with the open boundary condition. Consequently, we find that stripe formation is universal in a low hole doping range and the stripe sensitively changes its structure with variations of $U/t$ and the doping rate. A remarkable change is that a stripe formed by a hole pair turns to one by a bi-hole pair when entering a limited strong $U/t$ range. Furthermore, a systematic calculation reveals that the Hubbard model shows a change from the stripe to the Friedel like oscillation with increasing the doping rate.
