We report experimental evidence for atomic chain formation during stretching of atomic-sized contacts for gold and silver, that is strongly enhanced due to oxygen incorporation. While gold has been known for its tendency to form atomic chains, for silver this is only observed in the presence of oxygen. With oxygen the silver chains are as long as those for gold, but the conductance drops with chain length to about 0.1 conductance quantum. A relation is suggested with previous work on surface reconstructions for silver (110) surfaces after chemisorption of oxygen.

Suspended chains consisting of single noble metal and oxygen atoms have been formed. We provide evidence that oxygen can react with and be incorporated into metallic one-dimensional atomic chains. Oxygen incorporation reinforces the linear bonds in t he chain, which facilitates the creation of longer atomic chains. The mechanical and electrical properties of these diatomic chains have been investigated by determining local vibration modes of the chain and by measuring the dependence of the average chain-conductance on the length of the chain. Additionally, we have performed calculations that give insight in the physical mechanism of the oxygen-induced strengthening of the linear bonds and the conductance of the metal-oxygen chains.
Stable, single-molecule conducting-bridge configurations are typically identified from peak structures in a conductance histogram. In previous work on Pt with H$_2$ at cryogenic temperatures it has been shown that a peak near 1 $G{_0}$ identifies a s ingle molecule Pt-H$_{2}$-Pt bridge. The histogram shows an additional structure with lower conductance that has not been identified. Here, we show that it is likely due to a hydrogen decorated Pt chain in contact with the H$_2$ molecular bridge.

For the first time, we report the formation of pentagonal atomic chains during tensile deformation of ultra thin BCC Fe nanowires. Extensive molecular dynamics simulations have been performed on $<$100$>$/{110} BCC Fe nanowires with different cross s ection width varying from 0.404 to 3.634 nm at temperatures ranging from 10 to 900 K. The results indicate that above certain temperature, long and stable pentagonal atomic chains form in BCC Fe nanowires with cross section width less than 2.83 nm. The temperature, above which the pentagonal chains form, increases with increase in nanowire size. The pentagonal chains have been observed to be highly stable over large plastic strains and contribute to high ductility in Fe nanowires.

Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the effects of Si solute on the glass formation and crystallization of Pd liquid. Pure Pd sample prepared by quenching process with cooling rate of $10^{13}$ K/s can be in an amorphous state but the structural analysis indicates there is nearly no glass-forming motif in the sample. However, doping a small amount Si (Si concentration ~ 4%) the sample can be vitrified at a cooling rate of $10^{12}$ K/s. The glass-forming motifs such as Pd-centered Z13, Si-centered Z9-like and Mixed-ICO-Cube clusters with 5-fold local symmetry are found to be the dominant short-range orders in the glassy samples. With the increasing of the Si-doping concentration, these glass-forming motifs tend to aggregate and connect with each other forming a network structure. Our calculated results revealed that Si solutes in liquid Pd can significantly enhance the glass-forming ability.
Both experimental and theoretical studies of the magnetic properties of micrographite and nanographite indicate a crucial role of the partial oxidation of graphitic zigzag edges in ferromagnetism. In contrast to total and partial hydrogenation, the o xidation of half of the carbon atoms on the graphite edges transforms the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between graphite planes and over graphite ribbons to the ferromagnetic interaction. The stability of the ferromagnetism is discussed.
