We have altered the superconductivity of a suspended rope of single walled carbon nanotubes, by coating it with organic polymers. Upon coating, the normal state resistance of the rope changes by less than 20 percent. But superconductivity, which on the bare rope shows up as a substantial resistance decrease below 300 mK, is gradualy suppressed. We correlate this to the suppression of radial breathing modes, measured with Raman Spectroscopy on suspended Single and Double-walled carbon nanotubes. This points to the breathing phonon modes as being responsible for superconductivity in carbon nanotubes.

Recent experimental and theoretical results on intrinsic superconductivity in ropes of single-wall carbon nanotubes are reviewed and compared. We find strong experimental evidence for superconductivity when the distance between the normal electrodes is large enough. This indicates the presence of attractive phonon-mediated interactions in carbon nanotubes, which can even overcome the repulsive Coulomb interactions. The effective low-energy theory of rope superconductivity explains the experimental results on the temperature-dependent resistance below the transition temperature in terms of quantum phase slips. Quantitative agreement with only one fit parameter can be obtained. Nanotube ropes thus represent superconductors in an extreme 1D limit never explored before.

We show that carbon nanotubes (CNT) are good candidates for realizing one-dimensional topological superconductivity with Majorana fermions localized near the end points. The physics behind topological superconductivity in CNT is novel and is mediated by a recently reported curvature-induced spin-orbit coupling which itself has a topological origin. In addition to the spin-orbit coupling, an important new requirement for a robust topological state is broken chirality symmetry about the nanotube axis. We use topological arguments to show that, for recently realized strengths of spin-orbit coupling and broken chirality symmetry, a robust topological gap of around 500 mK is achievable in carbon nanotubes.

We report Meissner effect for type-II superconductors with a maximum Tc of 19 K, which is the highest value among those in new-carbon related superconductors, found in the honeycomb arrays of multi-walled CNTs (MWNTs). Drastic reduction of ferromagne tic catalyst and efficient growth of MWNTs by deoxidization of catalyst make the finding possible. The weak magnetic anisotropy, superconductive coherence length (- 7 nm), and disappearance of the Meissner effect after dissolving array structure indicate that the graphite structure of an MWNT and those intertube coupling in the honeycomb array are dominant factors for the mechanism.

We investigate adsorption effects of copper phthalocyanine molecules on excitons and trions in air-suspended carbon nanotubes. Using photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy, we observe that exciton energy redshifts gradually with the molecular depo sition thickness. The trion emission is also observed at large deposition amounts, which indicates charge transfer between the phthalocyanine molecules and carbon nanotubes. Analysis of the spectra for individual tubes reveal a correlation between the exciton-trion energy separation and the exciton emission energy, showing that the many-body interaction energies scale similarly with the molecular dielectric screening.

Organic color centers in single-walled carbon nanotubes have demonstrated exceptional ability to generate single photons at room temperature in the telecom range. Combining the color centers with pristine air-suspended tubes would be desirable for im proved performance, but all current synthetic methods occur in solution which makes them incompatible. Here we demonstrate formation of color centers in air-suspended nanotubes using vapor-phase reaction. Functionalization is directly verified on the same nanotubes by photoluminescence spectroscopy, with unambiguous statistics from more than a few thousand individual nanotubes. The color centers show a strong diameter-dependent emission intensity, which can be explained with a theoretical model for chemical reactivity taking into account strain along the tube curvature. We are also able to estimate the defect density by comparing the experiments with simulations based on a one-dimensional diffusion equation, whereas the analysis of diameter dependent peak energies gives insight to the nature of the dopant states. Time-resolved measurements show a longer lifetime for color center emission compared to E$_{11}$ exciton states. Our results highlight the influence of the tube structure on vapor-phase reactivity and emission properties, providing guidelines for development of high-performance near-infrared quantum light sources.
