We have studied the influence of a square array of pinning centers on the dynamics of vortex avalanches in Pb thin films by means of ac- and dc- magnetization measurements. Close to the superconducting transition Tc the commensurability between the vortex lattice and the pinning array leads to the well known local increments of the critical current. As temperature T decreases, matching features progressively fade out and eventually disappear. Further down in temperature vortex avalanches develop and dominate the magnetic response. These avalanches manifest themselves as jumps in the dc-magnetization and produce a lower ac-shielding giving rise to a paramagnetic reentrance in the ac-screening x(T). Within the flux jump regime two subregimes can be identified. Close to the boundary where vortex avalanches develope, the field separation between consecutive jumps follow the periodicity of the pinning array and a field and temperature dependent screening is observed. In this regime, the response also depends on frequency f in agreement with theoretical models for magnetothermal instabilities. At low enough temperatures and fields, the screening saturates to a constant value independent of T, H, and f, where jumps are randomly distributed. We have also found that vortex instabilities occupy a larger portion of the H-T diagram in patterned samples than in films without nanoengineered pinning sites. Finally, we discuss the possible origin of the vortex avalanches and compare our results with previous experimental and theoretical studies.

We present numerical and analytical studies of coupled nonlinear Maxwell and thermal diffusion equations which describe nonisothermal dendritic flux penetration in superconducting films. We show that spontaneous branching of propagating flux filament s occurs due to nonlocal magnetic flux diffusion and positive feedback between flux motion and Joule heat generation. The branching is triggered by a thermomagnetic edge instability which causes stratification of the critical state. The resulting distribution of magnetic microavalanches depends on a spatial distribution of defects. Our results are in good agreement with experiments performed on Nb films.
We describe an alternating current method to measure the Nernst effect in superconducting thin films at low temperatures. The Nernst effect is an important tool in the understanding superconducting fluctuations and, in particular, vortex motion near critical points. However, in most materials, the Nernst signal in a typical experimental setup rarely exceeds a few $mu$V, in some cases being as low as a few nV. DC measurements of such small signals require extensive signal processing and protection against stray pickups and offsets, limiting the sensitivity of such measurements to $>$5nV. Here we describe a method utilizing a one-heater-two-thermometer setup with the heating element and thermometers fabricated on-chip with the sample, which helped to reduce thermal load and temperature lag between the substrate and thermometer. Using AC heating power and 2$omega$ measurement, we are able to achieve sub-nanovolt sensitivity in 20-30nm MoGe thin films on glass substrate, compared to a sensitivity of $sim$9nV using DC techniques on the same setup.
We discuss pinning properties of MgB2 thin films grown by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) and by electron-beam (EB) evaporation. Two mechanisms are identified that contribute most effectively to the pinning of vortices in randomly oriented films. The E B process produces low defected crystallites with small grain size providing enhanced pinning at grain boundaries without degradation of Tc. The PLD process produces films with structural disorder on a scale less that the coherence length that further improves pinning, but also depresses Tc.
We report on magneto-optical imaging, magnetization, Hall effect and magneto-resistance experiments in Nb/Al_2O_3/Co thin film heterostructures. The magnetic field is applied perpendicularly to the plane of the film and gives rise to abrupt flux pene tration of dendritic form. A magnetization texture is imprinted in the Co layer in perfect coincidence with these ramifications. The spin domains that mimic the vortex dendrites are stable upon the field removal. Moreover, the imprinted spin structure remains visible up to room temperature. Complementary magnetization, Hall effect and magneto-resistance experiments were performed in a similar sample where electrical contacts were placed on the Co layer. In the region of the field - temperature diagram where flux instabilities are known to occur in Nb films, irregular jumps are observed in the magnetic hysteresis and large amplitude noise is detected in the magneto-resistance and Hall resistivity data when measured as a function of the field.

The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of various MgB2 films have been studied at different magnetic fields parallel to c-axis. At fields mu0H between 0 and 5T, vortex liquid-glass transitions were found in the I-V isotherms. Consistently, the I-V curves measured at different temperatures show a scaling behavior in the framework of quasi-two-dimension (quasi-2D) vortex glass theory. However, at mu0 H >= 5T, a finite dissipation was observed down to the lowest temperature here, T=1.7K, and the I-V isotherms did not scale in terms of any known scaling law, of any dimensionality. We suggest that this may be caused by a mixture of sigma band vortices and pi band quasiparticles. Interestingly, the I-V curves at zero magnetic field can still be scaled according to the quasi-2D vortex glass formalism, indicating an equivalent effect of self-field due to persistent current and applied magnetic field.
