We investigate a quasi-one dimensional system of trapped cold bosonic atoms in an optical lattice by using the density matrix renormalization group to study the Bose-Hubbard model at T=0 for experimentally realistic numbers of lattice sites. It is shown that a properly rescaled one-particle density matrix characterizes superfluid versus insulating states just as in the homogeneous system. For typical parabolic traps we also confirm the widely used local density approach for describing correlations in the limit of weak interaction. Finally, we note that the superfluid to Mott-insulating transition is seen most directly in the half width of the interference peak.

Recent experiments with ultracold lanthanide atoms which are characterized by a large magnetic moment have revealed the crucial importance of beyond-mean-field corrections in understanding the dynamics of the gas. We study how the presence of an exte rnal optical lattice modifies the structure of the corrections. We find that deep in the superfluid regime the equation of state is well described by introducing an anisotropic effective mass. However, for a deep lattice we find terms with anomalous density dependence which do not arise in free space. For a one-dimensional lattice, the relative orientation of the dipole axis with respect to the lattice plays a crucial role and the beyond-mean-field corrections can be either enhanced or suppressed.
Periodically-driven quantum systems are currently explored in view of realizing novel many-body phases of matter. This approach is particularly promising in gases of ultracold atoms, where sophisticated shaking protocols can be realized and inter-par ticle interactions are well controlled. The combination of interactions and time-periodic driving, however, often leads to uncontrollable heating and instabilities, potentially preventing practical applications of Floquet-engineering in large many-body quantum systems. In this work, we experimentally identify the existence of parametric instabilities in weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensates in strongly-driven optical lattices through momentum-resolved measurements. Parametric instabilities can trigger the destruction of weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensates through the rapid growth of collective excitations, in particular in systems with weak harmonic confinement transverse to the lattice axis.
We study bosons in the first excited Bloch band of a double-well optical lattice, recently realized at NIST. By calculating the relevant parameters from a realistic nonseparable lattice potential, we find that in the most favorable cases the boson li fetime in the first excited band can be several orders of magnitude longer than the typical nearest-neighbor tunnelling timescales, in contrast to that of a simple single-well lattice. In addition, for sufficiently small lattice depths the excited band has minima at nonzero momenta incommensurate with the lattice period, which opens a possibility to realize an exotic superfluid state that spontaneously breaks the time-reversal, rotational, and translational symmetries. We discuss possible experimental signatures of this novel state.
The experimentally observed loss of superfluidity by introducing fermions to the boson Hubbard system on an optical lattice is explained. We show that the virtual transitions of the bosons to the higher Bloch bands, coupled with the contact boson-fer mion interactions of either sign, result in an effective increase of the boson on-site repulsion. If this renormalization of the on-site potential is dominant over the fermion screening of the boson interactions, the Mott insulating lobes of the Bose-Hubbard phase diagram will be enhanced for either sign of the boson-fermion interactions. We discuss implications for cold atom experiments where the expansion of the Mott lobes by fermions has been conclusively established.

In the previous papers, we studied the bosonic t-J mode and derived an effective field theory, which is a kind of quantum XY model. The bosonic t-J model is expected to be realized by experiments of two-component cold atoms in an optical lattice. In this paper, we consider a similar XY model that describes phase diagram of the t-J model with a mass difference. Phase diagram and critical behavior of the quantum XY model are clarified by means of the Monte-Carlo simulations. Effective field theory that describes the phase structure and low-energy excitations of the quantum XY model is derived. Nambu-Goldstone bosons and the Higgs mode are studied by using the effective field theory and interesting findings are obtained for the system with multiple order, i.e., Bose-Einstein condensations and pseudo-spin symmetry. We also investigate physical properties of the quantum XY model in an effective magnetic field that is realized by rotating the optical lattice, etc. We show that low-energy states of the system strongly depend on the strength of the magnetic field. For some specific strength of the magnetic field, vortex lattice forms and the correlation function of the bosons exhibits solid like behavior, which is a kind of Bose-Einstein condensation.
