We report large-scale simulations of the resistively-shunted Josephson junction array in strip geometry. As the strip width increases, the voltage first decreases following the dynamic scaling ansatz proposed by Minnhagen {it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {bf 74}, 3672 (1995)], and then rises towards the asymptotic value predicted by Ambegaokar {it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {bf 40}, 783 (1978)]. The nonmonotonic size-dependence is attributed to shortened life time of free vortices in narrow strips, and points to the danger of single-scale analysis applied to a charge-neutral superfluid state.

We investigate finite-size quantum effects in the dynamics of $N$ bosonic particles which are tunneling between two sites adopting the two-site Bose-Hubbard model. By using time-dependent atomic coherent states (ACS) we extend the standard mean-field equations of this bosonic Josephson junction, which are based on time-dependent Glauber coherent states. In this way we find $1/N$ corrections to familiar mean-field (MF) results: the frequency of macroscopic oscillation between the two sites, the critical parameter for the dynamical macroscopic quantum self trapping (MQST), and the attractive critical interaction strength for the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) of the ground state. To validate our analytical results we perform numerical simulations of the quantum dynamics. In the case of Josephson oscillations around a balanced configuration we find that also for a few atoms the numerical results are in good agreement with the predictions of time-dependent ACS variational approach, provided that the time evolution is not too long. Also the numerical results of SSB are better reproduced by the ACS approach with respect to the MF one. Instead the onset of MQST is correctly reproduced by ACS theory only in the large $N$ regime and, for this phenomenon, the $1/N$ correction to the MF formula is not reliable.
We have studied the phase diagram of two capacitively coupled Josephson junction arrays with charging energy, $E_c$, and Josephson coupling energy, $E_J$. Our results are obtained using a path integral Quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. The parameter tha t quantifies the quantum fluctuations in the i-th array is defined by $alpha_iequiv frac{E_{{c}_i}}{E_{J_i}}$. Depending on the value of $alpha_i$, each independent array may be in the semiclassical or in the quantum regime: We find that thermal fluctuations are important when $alpha lesssim 1.5 $ and the quantum fluctuations dominate when $2.0 lesssim alpha $. We have extensively studied the interplay between vortex and charge dominated individual array phases. The two arrays are coupled via the capacitance $C_{{rm inter}}$ at each site of the lattices. We find a {it reentrant transition} in $Upsilon(T,alpha)$, at low temperatures, when one of the arrays is in the semiclassical limit (i.e. $alpha_{1}=0.5 $) and the quantum array has $2.0 leqalpha_{2} leq 2.5$, for the values considered for the interlayer capacitance. In addition, when $3.0 leq alpha_{2} < 4.0$, and for all the inter-layer couplings considered above, a {it novel} reentrant phase transition occurs in the charge degrees of freedom, i.e. there is a reentrant insulating-conducting transition at low temperatures. We obtain the corresponding phase diagrams and found some features that resemble those seen in experiments with 2D JJA.
Coulomb drag and depinning are electronic transport phenomena that occur in low-dimensional nanostructures. Recently, both phenomena have been reported in bilinear Josephson junction arrays. These devices provide a unique opportunity to study the int erplay of Coulomb drag and depinning in a system where all relevant parameters can be controlled experimentally. We explain the Coulomb drag and depinning characteristics in the I-V curve of the bilinear Josephson junction array by adopting a quasicharge model which has previously proven useful in describing threshold phenomena in linear Josephson junction arrays. Simulations are performed for a range of coupling strengths, where numerically obtained I-V curves match well with what has been previously observed experimentally. Analytic expressions for the ratio between the active and passive currents are derived from depinning arguments. Novel phenomena are predicted at voltages higher than those for which experimental results have been reported to date.
We establish a one-to-one mapping between a model for hexagonal polyelectrolyte bundles and a model for two-dimensional, frustrated Josephson-junction arrays. We find that the T=0 insulator-to-superconductor transition of the {it quantum} system corr esponds to a continuous liquid-to-solid transition of the condensed charge in the finite temperature {it classical} system. We find that the role of the vector potential in the quantum system is played by elastic strain in the classical system. Exploiting this correspondence we show that the transition is accompanied by a spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry and that at the transition the polyelectrolyte bundle adopts a universal response to shear.
We investigate mesoscopic Josephson junction arrays created by patterning superconducting disks on monolayer graphene, concentrating on the high-$T/T_c$ regime of these devices and the phenomena which contribute to the superconducting glass state in diffusive arrays. We observe features in the magnetoconductance at rational fractions of flux quanta per array unit cell, which we attribute to the formation of flux-quantized vortices. The applied fields at which the features occur are well described by Ginzburg-Landau simulations that take into account the number of unit cells in the array. We find that the mean conductance and universal conductance fluctuations are both enhanced below the critical temperature and field of the superconductor, with greater enhancement away from the graphene Dirac point.
