Measurements by the U.C. Berkeley Infrared Spatial Interferometer at 11.15 micron have yielded strong evidence for multiple dust shells and/or significant asymmetric dust emission around NML Cyg. New observations reported also include multiple 8-13 micron spectra taken from 1994-1995 and N band (10.2 micron) photometry from 1980-1992. These and past measurements are analyzed and fitted to a model of the dust distribution around NML Cyg. No spherically symmetric single dust shell model is found consistent with both near- and mid-infrared observations. However, a circularly symmetric maximum entropy reconstruction of the 11 micron brightness distribution suggests a double shell model for the dust distribution. Such a model, consisting of a geometrically thin shell of intermediate optical depth ($tau_{11 micron} sim 1.9$) plus an outer shell ($tau_{11 micron} sim 0.33$), is consistent not only with the 11 micron visibility data, but also with near-infrared speckle measurements, the broadband spectrum, and the 9.7 micron silicate feature. The outer shell, or large scale structure, is revealed only by long-baseline interferometry at 11 micron, being too cold ($sim$ 400 K) to contribute in the near-infrared and having no unambiguous spectral signature in the mid-infrared. The optical constants of Ossenkopf, Henning, & Mathis (1992) proved superior to the Draine & Lee (1984) constants in fitting the detailed shape of the silicate feature and broadband spectrum for this object. Recent observations of H$_2$O maser emission around NML Cyg by Richards, Yates, & Cohen (1996) are consistent with the location of the two dust shells and provide further evidence for the two-shell model.

We present an interferometric study of the continuum surface of the red supergiant star Betelgeuse at 11.15 microns wavelength, using data obtained with the Berkeley Infrared Spatial Interferometer each year between 2006 and 2010. These data allow an investigation of an optically thick layer within 1.4 stellar radii of the photosphere. The layer has an optical depth of ~1 at 11.15 microns, and varies in temperature between 1900 K and 2800 K and in outer radius between 1.16 and 1.36 stellar radii. Electron-hydrogen atom collisions contribute significantly to the opacity of the layer. The layer has a non-uniform intensity distribution that changes between observing epochs. These results indicate that large-scale surface convective activity strongly influences the dynamics of the inner atmosphere of Betelgeuse, and mass-loss processes.
Excited-state OH maser emission has previously been reported in the circumstellar envelopes of only two evolved stars: the Mira star AU Geminorum and the hypergiant NML Cygni. We present Very Large Array (VLA) observations of the 1665, 1667, and exci ted-state 4750 MHz mainline OH transitions in AU Gem and Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) observations of the excited-state 6030 and 6035 MHz OH mainline transitions in NML Cyg. We detect masers in both mainline transitions in AU Gem but no excited-state emission in either star. We conclude that the excited-state OH emission in AU Gem is either a transient phenomenon (such as for NML Cyg outlined below), or possibly an artifact in the data, and that the excited state OH emission in NML Cyg was generated by an episode of enhanced shock between the stellar mass-loss and an outflow of the Cyg OB2 association. With these single exceptions, it therefore appears that excited-state OH emission indeed should not be predicted nor observable in evolved stars as part of their normal structure or evolution.
HST and ground-based [OII} and [NII] images obtained from 1996 to 1999 reveal the existence of a ionised optical nebula around the symbiotic binary CH Cyg extending out to 5000 A.U. from the central stars. The observed velocity range of the nebula, d erived from long-slit echelle spectra, is of 130 km/s. In spite of its complex appearence, the velocity data show that the basic morphology of the inner regions of the optical nebula is that of a bipolar (or conical) outflow extending nearly along the plane of the sky out to some 2000 A.U. from the centre. Even if the extension of this bipolar outflow and its position angle are consistent with those of the radio jet produced in 1984 (extrapolated to the time of our optical imagery), no obvious counterpart is visible of the original, dense radio bullets ejected by the system. We speculate that the optical bipolar outflow might be the remannt of the interaction of the bullets with a relatively dense circumstellar medium.

Pseudo-LiDAR based 3D object detectors have gained popularity due to their high accuracy. However, these methods need dense depth supervision and suffer from inferior speed. To solve these two issues, a recently introduced RTS3D builds an efficient 4 D Feature-Consistency Embedding (FCE) space for the intermediate representation of object without depth supervision. FCE space splits the entire object region into 3D uniform grid latent space for feature sampling point generation, which ignores the importance of different object regions. However, we argue that, compared with the inner region, the outer region plays a more important role for accurate 3D detection. To encode more information from the outer region, we propose a shape prior non-uniform sampling strategy that performs dense sampling in outer region and sparse sampling in inner region. As a result, more points are sampled from the outer region and more useful features are extracted for 3D detection. Further, to enhance the feature discrimination of each sampling point, we propose a high-level semantic enhanced FCE module to exploit more contextual information and suppress noise better. Experiments on the KITTI dataset are performed to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared with the baseline RTS3D, our proposed method has 2.57% improvement on AP3d almost without extra network parameters. Moreover, our proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods without extra supervision at a real-time speed.
We generalize the classical notion of packing a set by balls with identical radii to the case where the radii may be different. The largest number of such balls that fit inside the set without overlapping is called its {em non-uniform packing number} . We show that the non-uniform packing number can be upper-bounded in terms of the {em average} radius of the balls, resulting in bounds of the familiar classical form.
