GW Vir variables are the pulsating members in the spectroscopic class of PG 1159 stars. In order to understand the characteristic differences between pulsating and non-pulsating PG 1159 stars, we analyse FUSE spectra of eleven objects, of which six are pulsating, by means of state-of-the-art NLTE model atmospheres. The numerous metal lines in the FUV spectra of these stars allow a precise determination of the photospheric parameters. We present here preliminary results of our analysis.

We report the discovery of pulsations in the spectroscopic PG 1159 type pre-white dwarf SDSS J075415.12+085232.18. Analysis of the spectrum by Werner, Rauch and Kepler (2014) indicated Teff=120 000+/-10 000 K, log g=7.0+/-0.3, mass M=0.52+/-0.02 Msun , C/He=0.33 by number. We obtained time-series images with the SOAR 4.1 m telescope and 2.1 m Otto Struve telescope at McDonald Observatory and show the star is also a variable PG 1159 type star, with dominant period of 525 s.

The analysis of Planetary Nebulae (PNe) provides a tool to investigate the properties of their exciting central stars (CSPN) at the moment of the PN ejection as well as on the properties of the ambient interstellar medium (ISM). The spectral analysis of the CSPN is a prerequisite to calculate the ionizing flux which is a crucial input for reliable PN modeling. In the framework of a systematic study of PNe interacting with the ISM, we present preliminary results of ongoing NLTE spectral analyses of ten of their CS based on new optical medium-resolution spectra.
An asteroseismological study of PG 1159-035, the prototype of the GW Vir variable stars, has been performed on the basis of detailed and full PG1159 evolutionary models presented by Miller Bertolami & Althaus (2006). We carried out extensive computat ions of adiabatic g-mode pulsation periods on PG1159 evolutionary models with stellar masses spanning the range 0.530 to 0.741 Mo. We derive a stellar mass in the range 0.56-0.59 Mo from the period-spacing data alone. We also find, on the basis of a period-fit procedure, a seismic model representative of PG 1159-035 that reproduces the observed period pattern with an average of the period differences of 0.64-1.03 s, consistent with the expected model uncertainties. The results of the period-fit analysis carried out in this work suggest that the surface gravity of PG 1159-035 would be 1 sigma larger than the spectroscopically inferred gravity. For our best-fit model of PG 1159-035, all of the pulsation modes are characterized by positive rates of period changes, at odds with the measurements by Costa & Kepler (2007).
We present JEKYLL, a new code for modelling of supernova (SN) spectra and lightcurves based on Monte-Carlo (MC) techniques for the radiative transfer. The code assumes spherical symmetry, homologous expansion and steady state for the matter, but is o therwise capable of solving the time-dependent radiative transfer problem in non-local-thermodynamic-equilibrium (NLTE). The method used was introduced in a series of papers by Lucy, but the full time-dependent NLTE capabilities of it have never been tested. Here, we have extended the method to include non-thermal excitation and ionization as well as charge-transfer and two-photon processes. Based on earlier work, the non-thermal rates are calculated by solving the Spencer-Fano equation. Using a method previously developed for the SUMO code, macroscopic mixing of the material is taken into account in a statistical sense. In addition, a statistical Markov-chain model is used to sample the emission frequency, and we introduce a method to control the sampling of the radiation field. Except for a description of JEKYLL, we provide comparisons with the ARTIS, SUMO and CMFGEN codes, which show good agreement in the calculated spectra as well as the state of the gas. In particular, the comparison with CMFGEN, which is similar in terms of physics but uses a different technique, shows that the Lucy method does indeed converge in the time-dependent NLTE case. Finally, as an example of the time-dependent NLTE capabilities of JEKYLL, we present a model of a Type IIb SN, taken from a set of models presented and discussed in detail in an accompanying paper. Based on this model we investigate the effects of NLTE, in particular those arising from non-thermal excitation and ionization, and find strong effects even on the bolometric lightcurve. This highlights the need for full NLTE calculations when simulating the spectra and lightcurves of SNe.

The copper abundances of 29 metal-poor stars are determined based on the high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra from the UVES spectragraph at the ESO VLT telescope. Our sample consists of the stars of the Galactic halo, thick- and thin-d isk with [Fe/H] ranging from ~ -3.2 to ~ 0.0 dex. The non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) effects of Cu I lines are investigated, and line formation calculations are presented for an atomic model of copper including 97 terms and 1089 line transitions. We adopted the recently calculated photo-ionization cross-sections of Cu I, and investigated the hydrogen collision by comparing the theoretical and observed line profiles of our sample stars. The copper abundances are derived for both local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and NLTE based on the spectrum synthesis methods. Our results show that the NLTE effects for Cu I lines are important for metal-poor stars, in particular for very metal-poor stars, and these effects depend on the metallicity. For very metal-poor stars, the NLTE abundance correction reaches as large as ~ +0.5 dex compared to standard LTE calculations. Our results indicate that [Cu/Fe] is under-abundant for metal-poor stars (~ -0.5 dex) when the NLTE effects are included.
