There has been a renewed interest in searching for diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) due to their probable connection to organic molecules and, thus, their possible link to life in the Universe. Our group is undertaking an extensive search for DIBs in DLAs via QSO absorption-line systems. Six of our DLA targets are presented here. Our equivalent width (EW) limits for the 5780 DIB line strongly suggests that DIB abundance is below the Milky Way expected value or that metallicity plays a large role in DIB strengths.

(Abridged) Protoplanetary disks are vital objects in star and planet formation, possessing all the material which may form a planetary system orbiting the new star. We investigate the synthesis of complex organic molecules (COMs) in disks to constrai n the achievable chemical complexity and predict species and transitions which may be observable with ALMA. We have coupled a 2D model of a protoplanetary disk around a T Tauri star with a gas-grain chemical network including COMs. We compare compare synthesised line intensities and calculated column densities with observations and determine those COMs which may be observable in future. COMs are efficiently formed in the disk midplane via grain-surface chemical reactions, reaching peak grain-surface fractional abundances 1e-6 - 1e-4 that of the H nuclei number density. COMs formed on grain surfaces are returned to the gas phase via non-thermal desorption; however, gas-phase species reach lower fractional abundances than their grain-surface equivalents, 1e-12 - 1e-7. Including the irradiation of grain mantle material helps build further complexity in the ice through the replenishment of grain-surface radicals which take part in further grain-surface reactions. There is reasonable agreement with several line transitions of H2CO observed towards several T Tauri star-disk systems. The synthesised line intensities for CH3OH are consistent with upper limits determined towards all sources. Our models suggest CH3OH should be readily observable in nearby protoplanetary disks with ALMA; however, detection of more complex species may prove challenging. Our grain-surface abundances are consistent with those derived from cometary comae observations providing additional evidence for the hypothesis that comets (and other planetesimals) formed via the coagulation of icy grains in the Suns natal disk.
Isolating single molecules in the solid state has allowed fundamental experiments in basic and applied sciences. When cooled down to liquid helium temperature, certain molecules show transition lines, that are tens of megahertz wide, limited only by the excited state lifetime. The extreme flexibility in the synthesis of organic materials provides, at low costs, a wide palette of emission wavelengths and supporting matrices for such single chromophores. In the last decades, the controlled coupling to photonic structures has led to an optimized interaction efficiency with light. Molecules can hence be operated as single photon sources and as non-linear elements with competitive performance in terms of coherence, scalability and compatibility with diverse integrated platforms. Moreover, they can be used as transducers for the optical read-out of fields and material properties, with the promise of single-quanta resolution in the sensing of charges and motion. We show that quantum emitters based on single molecules hold promise to play a key role in the development of quantum science and technologies.

We study the incidence rate of damped Ly-a systems associated with the host galaxies of gamma-ray bursts (GRB-host-DLAs) as functions of neutral hydrogen column density (N_HI) and projected star formation rate (SFR) using cosmological SPH simulations . Assuming that the occurrence of GRBs is correlated with the local SFR, we find that the median N_HI of GRB-host-DLAs progressively shifts to lower N_HI values with increasing redshift, and the incidence rate of GRB-host-DLAs with log N_HI > 21.0 decreases rapidly at z>=6. Our results suggest that the likelihood of observing the signature of IGM attenuation in GRB afterglows increases towards higher redshift, because it will not be blocked by the red damping wing of DLAs in the GRB host galaxies. This enhances the prospects of using high-redshift GRBs to probe the reionization history of the Universe. The overall incidence rate of GRB-host-DLAs decreases monotonically with increasing redshift, whereas that of QSO-DLAs increases up to z=6. A measurement of the difference between the two incidence rates would enable an estimation of the value of eta_grb, which is the mass fraction of stars that become GRBs for a given amount of star formation. Our predictions can be tested by upcoming high-z GRB missions, including JANUS (Joint Astrophysics Nascent Universe Scout) and SVOM (Space multi-band Variable Object Monitor).
One of the new discoveries in quantum biology is the role of Environment Assisted Quantum Transport (ENAQT) in excitonic transport processes. In disordered quantum systems transport is most efficient when the environment just destroys quantum interfe rences responsible for localization, but the coupling does not drive the system to fully classical thermal diffusion yet. This poised realm between the pure quantum and the semi-classical domains has not been considered in other biological transport processes, such as charge transport through organic molecules. Binding in receptor-ligand complexes is assumed to be static as electrons are assumed to be not able to cross the ligand molecule. We show that ENAQT makes cross ligand transport possible and efficient between certain atoms opening the way for the reorganization of the charge distribution on the receptor when the ligand molecule docks. This new effect can potentially change our understanding how receptors work. We demonstrate room temperature ENAQT on the caffeine molecule.
Designing novel materials that possess desired properties is a central need across many manufacturing industries. Driven by that industrial need, a variety of algorithms and tools have been developed that combine AI (machine learning and analytics) w ith domain knowledge in physics, chemistry, and materials science. AI-driven materials design can be divided to mainly two stages; the first one is the modeling stage, where the goal is to build an accurate regression or classification model to predict material properties (e.g. glass transition temperature) or attributes (e.g. toxic/non-toxic). The next stage is design, where the goal is to assemble or tune material structures so that they can achieve user-demanded target property values based on a prediction model that is trained in the modeling stage. For maximum benefit, these two stages should be architected to form a coherent workflow. Today there are several emerging services and tools for AI-driven material design, however, most of them provide only partial technical components (e.g. data analyzer, regression model, structure generator, etc.), that are useful for specific purposes, but for comprehensive material design, those components need to be orchestrated appropriately. Our material design system provides an end-to-end solution to this problem, with a workflow that consists of data input, feature encoding, prediction modeling, solution search, and structure generation. The system builds a regression model to predict properties, solves an inverse problem on the trained model, and generates novel chemical structure candidates that satisfy the target properties. In this paper we will introduce the methodology of our system, and demonstrate a simple example of inverse design generating new chemical structures that satisfy targeted physical property values.
